If you have a question about SATA spray equipment visit our web site and click on FORUM. Q. I'm going to be painting some guitars with a minijet 4 using urethane automotive paints. The manufacture recommends using a mm tip for basecoats and a 1.3mm for clears in a full size HVLP gun. What size tip would be recommended in the minijet? An SR tip? A standard tip? A. A good choice would be a 1.0SR - the 1.4 SR which you might have thought about is for high solids clear, not the best choice for base coats. The nozzle of the small Minijet has to be smaller as a large gun uses a lot more air for atomization so there is a close relationship between size, air consumption and atomization. So you should use the material thinner than you usually do (add 5%) and you'll find that a SATAMinijet 4 is an excellent tool for your guitars. Q. I recently picked up one of the Individual Carbon Monoxide Monitors (ICOM) to use with my SATA Vision 2000 and I was wondering if you could tell me a little bit about the monitor and the best way to take care of this piece of equipment. A. The ICOM X-144 is a small yet rugged device that will give you an indication of the CO levels, but should not be considered an all inclusive monitor for overall air quality. The ICOM is only one tool for CO measurement or CO dosimetry for personal use. But remember there are several factors that can affect the air quality. Be sure to read the manual carefully and follow the simple steps to get the best CO detection out of your device. One issue that I see a lot with the ICOM is that it needs to be stored properly to ensure that it works properly. When not in use, the ICOM X-144 must be stored in an air-tight container to minimize exposure to contaminates such as paint fumes. This container should also have some activated carbon for additional air purity. Failure to do this may damage the X-144 s CO sensor over time in some environments, causing it to read CO levels above 0 even when taken to fresh air. Such damage can be reversed by leaving the X-144 in a clean air environment until the reading returns to 0 (up to 5 days), after which X-144 can again be used but should be stored as described. The newest ICOM unit will be sent out with a air tight storage container. These container are also available for purchase from SATA (part #1010), though any air-tight container can be used. In addition the newest versions of the ICOM also offer a user replaceable battery. Calibration is also very important. Like many CO detectors, the ICOM uses an electrochemical sensor to detect carbon monoxide. The readings from this type of sensor can drift with environment and time, resulting in inaccurate measurements. Calibrating with a known concentration of carbon monoxide gas allows the ICOM to compensate for this drift, and thus maintain good accuracy. **We strongly recommend calibrating the ICOM at least once per year, or whenever the accuracy of the reading is critical.** Failing to do so may result in inaccurate measurements, and worse, the failure of an alarm to trigger during a hazardous situation. The 2008 Hot Rod Power Tour rolled through the Midwest this year, hitting seven cities in seven days and creating quite a buzz among automotive enthusiast along the way. This years Hot Rod Power Tour, which began in Little Rock, AR on June 7th, passed through Spring Valley on its way to Rochester, MN, before the tour finished up in Madison WI. The streets of Spring Valley and Rochester were filled with people watching as the parade of tour cars and hot rods rode through town. Several of the automotive professionals, along with their tour vehicles stopped by the Dan-Am offices on their way through town, to catch up on the latest with SATA and the Dan-Am staff. Many of the tour members wanted to stop by and show the staff their beautiful vehicles and awesome paint jobs and it gave them a chance to check out the Dan-Am Company and the latest from SATA Spray Equipment. From Spring Valley the tour headed north to Rochester. The event drew over 4,000 classic and collector vehicles to the Rochester Technical and Community College, which played host during the Rochester leg of the tour. Tour officials were impressed with the turn out in Rochester for the event, claiming it was one of the best turnouts in the tours history. The colleges parking lot was filled to capacity with cars and spectators. Besides thousands of hot rods to check out there were several other things going on at the Rochester stop of the tour. Students from Rochester Community & Technical college were treated to a presentation on the automotive industry and potential career opportunities.
