ASTRO PORTABLE LPG CABINET HEATER Model No. KCH PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE USE These instructions should be read in conjunction with the Assembly and Safety Instructions on pages 3-7. After initial assembly is complete (see page 3) follow these easy steps: Step 1 Remove the cylinder cover from the heater and set to one side. Place the cylinder into the heater. STEP BY STEP LIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS Step 4 Replace the cylinder cover. Step 2 Ensure the valve on the cylinder is facing the rear of the heater and connect the regulator to the cylinder valve. Step 3 Turn on the cylinder by opening the valve fully in an anti-clockwise direction. ALWAYS check for leaks with a soapy water solution. Step 5 Position the heater in the area you wish to heat. Pay special attention to the ventilation requirements and the proximity of the heater to flammable objects or fabrics etc, see overleaf. Step 6 Stand to one side of the heater when lighting. NEVER stand directly in front of the heater when attempting to light the heater. Take care that your clothing is not in close contact with the safety guard or in front of the heater. ALWAYS stand to one side when lighting heater. NEVER stand in front of heater when lighting. NEVER kneel in front of heater when lighting. Important: Retain these instructions for future use /14
Step 7 To light the heater align the control knob with the setting. Push down fully on the control knob. If the heater has been fitted with a new LPG cylinder or has not been used for some time keep the knob depressed for approximately 15 seconds to let air escape (purge) from the gas hose and burner. If the heater has been used recently and has a cylinder already fitted then move to step 8 with no delay. Step 12 Turning off the Heater 1. Stand to one side of the heater when turning it off. NEVER stand directly in front of the heater when attempting to turn off the heater. Take care that your clothing is not in close contact with the safety guard or in front of the heater. 2. Turn control knob to the ( ) position. At this point the outer tiles will be off and the centre tile and pilot will still be running. 3. Reach into the back of the heater and turn the cylinder off by turning the valve hand wheel fully clockwise. 4. Observe the centre tile and pilot to ensure they fully extinguish. 5. Allow the heater to cool for approximately 30 minutes before moving or placing in storage. DO NOT purge for more than 15 seconds. Step 8 While still holding down the control knob fully, immediately push the spark piezo button. You should hear a click and see a small spark at the pilot flame (if the pilot and one burner does not ignite, release the control knob and spark piezo button, wait 30 seconds and repeat the procedure). Step 9 Look at the pilot to confirm it is lit. If the pilot does not light, release the control knob, wait 30 seconds and repeat the procedure. Do not attempt to re-light until 5 minutes have elapsed. WARNING: Health warning: Do not use if you suffer from asthma. Use of this type of heater may worsen existing breathing conditions. This appliance is not intended for unsupervised use by persons (including children) whose physical, sensory or mental capabilities; or lack of experience and knowledge prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction. Children should be supervised to ensure they do not play with the appliance. Use of a fireguard is recommended when used in the presence of persons who require supervision or who are unfamiliar with its operation, or in public spaces. Pilot Step 10 Once the pilot is lit, continue to hold the control knob down for a minimum of 5 seconds to allow the flame safety device to heat up. Release the control knob completely. The pilot and centre tile should remain alight. Step 11 Allow the control knob to rise and then slightly depress and rotate the knob to the desired heat setting. For full heat slightly depress knob, rotate to position - (3 tiles are lit). For medium heat slightly depress knob and rotate to position - (2 tiles are lit). For low heat slightly depress knob and rotate to position - (1 tile is lit). 2 Use this heater in a ventilated room. Make sure you have ventilation of at least 105cm 2. At a minimum there must be a window opening to outdoors that remains open at all times while the heater is in operation. The window must be at least 60cm (600mm) wide and be open at least 2cm (20mm) during operation of the heater. Do not use this heater in bedrooms, bathrooms, toilets, caravans, or small rooms under 86.4m 3 (cubic metres) floor area. This is approximately 6m L x 6m W x 2.4m H. Keep people, drapes, furniture and other objects at least 1 metre from the heater. Always face the heater towards the centre of the room. Do not place clothes or other objects on the heater. In addition to the danger from fire, this could affect the safe and efficient operation of the heater. Do not use the heater while people are sleeping. Do not move the heater while it is turned on.
1. ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS Remove your heater from the carton and assemble the base panel as follows: 1. Use 4 x M4*10 screws, 4 x Ф4 washers, 4 x Ф4 spring washers and 4 x M4 nuts to fix the side panel and the base panel (see A ). 2. Use 2 x ST3.5*10 screws to fix the side panel and the front panel, then use 2 x ST3.5*10 screws to fix the middle panel and the base panel (see B). Then attach the back panel to the heater properly after fitting the LPG Cylinder inside as per the following instructions. The cylinder should be positioned so that the opening of the cylinder faces the access door. Connecting your QCC1 SAFE-LOK Gas Cylinder WARNING: For maximum safety, ensure cylinder valve is in CLOSED position whenever: a) connecting or disconnecting regulator b) heater is not in use c) when cylinder is stored or removed for filling Connecting the Regulator to the Gas Cylinder Valve A. Always ensure the cylinder valve is closed, by turning clockwise fully. Fit the QCC regulator to the cylinder as shown in Fig 1. B. Align the Regulator Bull Nose straight to the valve (180 ). C. Turn the large black knob clockwise while engaging the threads on the valve (Fig 2). (It is necessary to tighten the knob completely, as the built-in safety system will only allow gas to flow if a safe connection has been made). It will take approximately 3-4 turns to firmly connect the regulator to the cylinder. D. Turn gas cylinder valve ON (anti-clockwise) as shown in Fig 3. E. Check for leaks on all connections using soapy water and a brush. Bubbles will appear if there is a leak. If you find a leak, turn valve off, undo and reattach. If the connection is still leaking, turn the cylinder off immediately and ventilate the space. Contact your local LPG service agent. Perform a leak test on all connections every time you reconnect the cylinder, or if the heater has not been used for a significant period. WARNING: It is safer to contact your dealer or local service agent if you experience any difficulty at all. 3
2. SAFETY INFORMATION Read these instructions carefully before fitting the appliance to the gas cylinder. These instructions should be retained for future reference as they contain important safety information. Never use this appliance in areas where there is insufficient ventilation as this may cause oxygen depletion which could endanger the life of the occupants of the area. Never modify this appliance in any way as this will void your warranty and more importantly, may make it unsafe. When operating this heater always ventilate the room by leaving a window which is at least 60cm (600mm) wide open to outdoors by at least 2cm (20mm) while the heater is in use. Do not use in a small room less than 86.4m³ (to ensure adequate ventilation/air changes). This is approximately 6m L x 6m W x 2.4m H. Do not use in high rise flats, bedrooms, bathrooms, basements, toilets, caravans or mobile homes. This appliance requires assembly by a competent person. This heater is operated by two controls: - The hand wheel on the LPG cylinder valve turns the gas supply ON/OFF. - The control knob which controls the gas flow for ignition and during operation. For safe operation of this heater, you must obey the following: DO NOT walk in front of the heater when lit. DO NOT move heater from room to room when lit. DO NOT place clothes or other objects on the heater. DO NOT position the heater within 1 metre of people, drapes, furniture and other objects. DO NOT use in high rise flats, bedrooms, bathrooms, basements, toilets, caravans, mobile homes or rooms under 86.4m³ floor area. ALWAYS face the heater towards the centre of the room. This appliance is designed to be used with a 9 kg LPG cylinder fitted with a horizontal valve outlet. Do not use the appliance unless the chrome wire safety guard is in place. Do not move the appliance when lit and operating. Be aware that even after use the appliance remains hot for several minutes. The guard on this appliance is to prevent risk of fire or injury from burns and no part of it should be permanently removed. IT DOES NOT GIVE FULL PROTECTION FOR YOUNG CHILDREN OR THE INFIRM. Avoid twisting the flexible tubing or the hose. Do not use the appliance if it is leaking gas (see notes on how to check for a gas leak). Keep children away from the appliance. Keep the appliance away from flammable materials e.g. Clothes, curtains, upholstery, etc. Always change the gas cylinder outdoors and away from any sources of ignition. In the event of a burn back (where the flame burns back to the jet) immediately turn off the gas supply at the cylinder control valve. After ensuring that the flame is extinguished, re-light the appliance as described below. Should the appliance again burn back, close the valve and return the appliance to the your local LPG Service Agent for examination. If there is an apparent gas leak on the appliance e.g. smell of gas, close the valve on the cylinder. Take the complete assembly outside into a flame free environment and test for the suspected leak as described below. Do not check for gas leaks with a flame as this is extremely dangerous! To check for a gas leak, light the appliance and use a brush dipped in a soapy water solution (e.g. water with dish washing liquid added). Apply the brush to the suspect areas such as the cylinder valve spindle or where the regulator screws into the cylinder. Also check the joins between the hose and regulator and between the hose and appliance. If there is a leak then bubbles will form. Should this happen, turn off the gas supply at the cylinder valve. Inspect the condition of the seal fitted on the regulator and ensure that it is in good condition. Refit the appliance to the cylinder and re-test using the soapy water solution. If the leak persists then take the appliance and the cylinder to your local LPG Service Agent for inspection and / or repair. Do not use in high rise flats, bedrooms, bathrooms, basements, toilets, caravans or mobile homes. After use turn off the appliance at the gas cylinder valve. 4
3. VENTILATION Do not operate the heater in a room smaller that 86.4m³. This is approximately 6m L x 6m W x 2.4m H. Ensure that when the heater is operating there is a window which is at least 60cm (600mm) wide open to outdoors by at least 2cm (20mm). Adequate ventilation must be provided in any room in which the heater is used. Never seal up the doorways and windows. This ensures dilution of the products of combustion and allows for the entry of fresh air. This should considerably reduce the possibility of condensation occurring and also provide a more pleasurable environment in your room. 4. SAFETY GUARD The guard over the burner tiles on this heater is to prevent the risk of fire or injury from burns and no part of it should be permanently removed. Use of a fireguard is recommended when used in the presence of persons who require supervision or who are unfamiliar with its operation, or in public spaces. Caution: Use only in a well ventilated room. You require at least 105cm³ ventilation. The guard still gets very hot and will cause injury if touched. It does not give full protection for young children or the infirm. 5. CHANGING OF CYLINDERS Never change cylinders in the presence of a naked flame. Change the LPG cylinder in a well-ventilated area, and away from any ignition source (candle, cigarettes and so on). Take the heater outside and remove the rear panel. Lift out the cylinder and place it on the ground next to the heater. Unscrew the regulator hand wheel nut in an anti-clockwise direction. Before connecting the refilled cylinder, check that the bull nose seal on the regulator is undamaged and in good condition. If in doubt take the regulator to a gas dealer to be checked. 6. CYLINDER SIZES The model KCH is designed for 9.0kg LPG Cylinders. 7. LEAK WARNING Should you suspect that the heater is leaking, turn OFF the cylinder valve and contact your local Gas Fitter or LPG Service Agent. 8. SERVICING & MAINTENANCE Depending on the usage, the heater should be serviced by a qualified LPG Service Agent at least every 12 months. This will ensure a safe and enjoyable winter heating system. Please ensure that the heating elements are kept free from dust and dirt. DO NOT interfere with safety devices, ie. Pilot Devices. Check that the regulator seal is undamaged when fitting a cylinder. Always check that the hose is in good condition before use and that it is securely clamped to the appliance and to the regulator. It is recommended that the hose be replaced every 2 years whether it has been used or not. When replacing the hose make sure that it is a proper hose for use with LPG. These are available from your local LPG Service Agent. When replacing the hose always replace the hose clamps at the same time. With the exception of the hose and regulator there are no user fitted parts available for this heater. Should the heater not function properly, have it checked by your LPG Service Agent and should replacement parts be required he / she will ensure that the correct parts be supplied and fitted in the proper manner. When not in use for extended periods disconnect the cylinder and store it outside away from buildings but covered up to keep it clean. Store the appliance in a dry place and covered up to protect it from dust. To clean the appliance wipe the exterior with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners. Never immerse the appliance in water or use water to clean the radiant heater elements. If the elements appear dusty then clean them using a soft brush or very carefully with a vacuum cleaner. Connect the refilled cylinder and check for any gas leaks as described in section E on page 3. If there are no leaks, fit the cylinder into the rear of the heater body making sure that the cylinder is placed in such a manner that the hose is not trapped or kinked in any way. Fit the heater rear panel to the heater by engaging the clips. 5
