3 FLUE PIPES Connecting Flue Pipes Regulations The flue pipe must be installed to comply with Document J of the Building Regulations in England and Wales and part F of the Building Regulations in Scotland. Flue Design The vitreous enamel and Prima Plus 1mm are used as connecting flue pipes from the appliance to the chimney and must only be used in the room where the appliance is installed. The maximum length for the vitreous enamel is 1.8 metres as recommended by the manufacturer. The Prima Plus 1mm may also be used to reline existing masonry chimneys and is approved for this use by HETAS. It is a recommendation that a vertical rise of 600mm should be allowed, immediately above the appliance before any change of direction. Use of an adjustable length within the flue pipe connection immediately above the appliance enables removal of the appliance later without dismantling the full system. If bends are needed, then no part of a flue pipe should form an angle greater than 45 from the vertical, except where it may be necessary to use a very short horizontal section, not exceeding 150mm, of flue to connect the flue pipe to a back outlet appliance. A maximum of four bends (2 offsets) is permitted. Distances from exposed combustible materials must be three times the diameter of the flue pipe eg.150mm id = 450mm clearance unless otherwise specified by the flue manufacturer. Flue Size The size of the flue pipe should be as recommended by the appliance manufacturer and in most cases should not be smaller than the appliance outlet. Confirmation from the appliance manufacturer will be required if you intend to reduce the flue pipe size. 7 FLEXIBLE FLUE LINERS Flexible Flue Liners Regulations Document J of the Building Regulations requires that a flexible flue liner can only be installed completely enclosed inside a masonry chimney. A non masonry enclosure such as timber or plasterboard boxing in is not acceptable. The type of flue liner permitted depends on the type of appliance and the fuel chosen to be used. Gas and oil flexible flue liners are manufactured out of single strip 16 grade stainless steel. There are two grades of multi fuel liner available: 16 grade stainless steel, which is suitable for wood burning and multi fuel use. 904 grade stainless steel, which is suitable for wood, multi fuel and specifically recommended for coal based solid fuels. Prior to installation The chimney should be inspected along with the external brickwork and capping/flaunching for deterioration and if necessary any remedial work should be carried out. The chimney must be swept, preferably by a suitably qualified chimney sweep who will provide a certificate after sweeping and checking, which should be retained for future reference. Installation of the liner The flue liner can be pulled up or down the chimney using purpose made nose cones, which are available on request. For multi fuel liners, heavy duty and light aluminium nose cones can be supplied. Multi fuel liners must be installed the correct way up directional arrows on the product point up to the sky. lt is recommended that a coring ball or short test section is pulled through the chimney prior to installation in order to ensure the chimney is suitably sized, and free from any obstructions. We would always recommend that flexible liners are insulated to aid the performance of the appliance and chimney system. Insulation such as Micafil, KWrap or Chimwrap can be used. Please note that Micafil / granular insulation must not be used with gas liners. Fuels and appliance operation Only fuels which are HETAS approved or recommended by the appliance manufacturer can be used. If burning wood, then it must be well seasoned for at least 12 months and not be any more than 20% moisture content to avoid creosote deposits building up within the flue way which can cause chimney fires. Prolonged slumbering of the appliance is a contributing factor to a liner failure especially when burning coal based solid fuels. It is important to maintain sufficiently high flue gas temperatures in order to avoid condensate and acid corrosion problems. Each firing should contain a controlled high fire condition for at least 0 minutes to clean deposits left during previous fire cool down. Household refuse and non approved fuels must not be burnt. Maintenance Provision should be made for inspecting and cleaning the liner especially on multi fuel liners for solid fuel applications. The liner should be swept at least once a year by a suitably qualified chimney sweep. Chemical chimney cleaners which contain chlorine, fluorine or metal scarifying devices cannot be used under any circumstances and will invalidate your warranty. Manual cleaning with a polypropylene or nylon brush or mechanical cleaning with a Rodtech UK manufactured polypropylene brush system are the only recommended methods. Life expectancy Under normal operating conditions and providing the liner is installed correctly by a competent person, flexible liners should last the lifetime of the appliance. Warranties Gas, oil and 16 grade multi fuel flexible liners carry a 10 year conditional warranty. 904 grade multi fuel flexible liners carry a 25 year conditional warranty. Contact us for further information. The conditions are that the appliance is operated as requested above and the flue liner is correctly sized, installed, and properly maintained, burning only approved fuels in accordance with the appliance manufacturer s instructions. Due to their composition, the use use of Chimney Cleaning Logs sold via Specflue will not invalidate your warranty. Temperatures Burning too hot is inefficient and wastes fuel, burning too cool deposits hazardous soot and tars within the flue. Monitor these temperatures with a flue/stove thermometer. 7FLEXIBLE FLUE LINERS

10 CHIMNEY SYSTEMS TWIN WALL CHIMNEY SYSTEMS Twin Wall Chimney Systems Regulations The chimney system must be installed to comply with Document J of the Building Regulations in England and Wales and part F of the Building Regulations in Scotland, as well as to the flue manufacturer s installation instructions. Flue Design The chimney should remain as straight as possible and be high enough to ensure sufficient draught to clear the products of combustion. The height necessary for this will depend upon the type of the appliance, the height of the building, and the number of offsets within the system. However, a minimum flue height of 4.5m should be achieved as recommended in the Building Regulations. Where it is not possible to construct a vertical chimney, Building Regulations dictate that no part of a chimney should form an angle greater than 45 from the vertical, except where it may be necessary to use a very short horizontal section, not exceeding 150mm, of flue to connect the chimney to a back outlet appliance. The run between offsets should not exceed 20% of the overall height of the chimney. In both instances a maximum of two offsets in any one chimney run should be used. Cleaning access must be provided in chimney systems with two offsets. It is also a recommendation that a vertical rise of 600mm should be allowed, immediately above the appliance before any change of direction. Where the chimney passes through a combustible floor or ceiling, an air gap clearance as per the manufacturer s installation instructions must be maintained. In multi fuel applications and where the flue gas temperature is greater than 250 C, the ventilated fire stop and ventilated support components must be used at the bottom and top of the shaft. For oil and gas applications where the flue gas temperature is below 250 C or where the chimney passes through a noncombustible floor the standard fire stops and support components can be used. No joints can be made within the thickness of any floor or ceiling joists. The twin wall chimney system must project below the ceiling in accordance to the diameter of the flue pipe. Use of an adjustable length within the flue pipe connection or twin wall chimney immediately above the appliance, enables removal of the appliance later without dismantling the full system. In the room where the appliance is installed, provision may need to be made for an air vent. This is required to provide adequate air supply to allow the appliance and flue to operate efficiently. These requirements are specified in the Building Regulations. Where a flue passes through an external wall, a wall sleeve must be used. Flue Size The size of the chimney system should be as recommended by the appliance manufacturer and in most cases should not be smaller than the appliance outlet. Confirmation from the manufacturer will be required if you reduce the flue size. Flue sizing for commercial applications will depend on individual site details and must be designed and sized in accordance with manufacturer s criteria. For open fireplaces and inglenooks with openings larger than 500mm x 550mm, a flue size with a cross sectional area equal to 15% of the total face area of the fireplace opening will be required. On multi fuel or wood burning closed appliances of up to 0kw rated output, the minimum flue size must be 150mm internal diameter. Support Components Load bearing supports eg. Wall supports and Ceiling/Joist supports are required to take the vertical weight of a chimney system. Non load bearing supports eg. Wall bands and roof/rafter supports give lateral support throughout the chimney system. Wall bands should be fitted to give lateral support, and where the chimney offsets to ensure the system is adequately supported. Where the chimney is free standing above the roof line check manufacturer s literature for exact details. This can be achieved unsupported with the use of a reinforced or extended locking band at the joint immediately below and every joint above the roof level. Provision for sweeping, cleaning and maintenance Provision should be made for inspecting and cleaning the chimney. This is particularly important on solid fuel applications. It is recommended that chimneys serving solid fuel appliances be swept and maintained as frequently as necessary but at least once a year. Carbon Monoxide The following is from Document J of the Buildings Regulations October Where a new or replacement fixed solid fuel appliance is installed in a dwelling, a carbon monoxide alarm should be provided in the room where the appliance is located. 2.5 Carbon monoxide alarms should comply with BS EN :2001 and be powered by a battery designed to operate for the working life of the alarm. The alarm should incorporate a warning device to alert users when the working life of the alarm is due to pass. Mainspowered BS EN Type A carbon monoxide alarms with fixed wiring (not plugin types) may be used as alternative applications provided they are fitted with a sensor failure warning device. 2.6 The carbon monoxide alarm should be located in the same room as the appliance: a. on the ceiling at least 00mm from any wall or, if it is located on a wall, as high up as possible (above any doors and windows) but not within 150mm of the ceiling; and b. between 1m and m horizontally from the appliance. Note: Further guidance on the installation of carbon monoxide alarms is available in BS EN 50292:2002 and from manufacturers' instructions. Provision of an alarm should not be regarded as a substitute for correct installation and regular servicing. Termination details for Solid Fuel Installations A B C D 2. metres horizontally clear of the roof surface and at least as high as the ridge on low pitched roofs. If terminating up to 600mm away from the ridge then the chimney should terminate at least 600mm above the ridge. If terminating directly through the ridge then the chimney should terminate at least 600mm above it. If the termination is located within 2. metres of an openable window or dormer, then it must terminate 1 metre above the top of the opening. 10

18 CHIMNEY SYSTEMS Pumice Chimney Liners Pumice is a natural material. It has high insulation properties making it unique to all other chimney materials. Resistant to temperature change Lightweight yet strong Energy efficient Fire Chests Flat pack kits which allow the construction of a neat preformed opening which is then left for finishing only. Available in a range of sizes and the Double Module system. The Double Module system is a flue lining system which has an air gap then an outer casing. The air gap also insulates as well as the pumice. The outer case can then be rendered or bricked around to give an easy solution to chimney building. 23 GAS VENTS Gas and Oil Vents Regulations The gas or oil vent must be installed to comply with Document J of the Building Regulations in England and Wales and part F of the Building Regulations in Scotland, for gas appliances having a flue gas temperature of 250 C max as well as to the flue manufacturer s installation instructions. The installation must also comply with BS5440 part 1:2000 for gas flues up to 60 kw in the UK. Only Gas Safe Register or OFTEC registered installers can commission the flue installation if the appliance is connected to the fuel supply. Gas and oil vents are manufactured, tested and approved to BS EN 1856 part 1 Flue Design The gas/oil vent should remain as straight as possible and be high enough to ensure sufficient draught to clear the products of combustion (see termination details). Both vents are extremely adaptable, but excessive changes of direction and angles greater than 45 from the vertical in any flue system must be avoided, as they will create considerable resistance to the movement of the flue gases. Horizontal runs must never be used and always ensure that the first section of vent rises 600mm vertically from the top of the appliance. The vertical distance between the appliance and the flue termination should always be twice the angled distance between the appliance and termination. In accordance with the Building Regulations, a minimum of 50mm distance to combustibles must be maintained. The gas and oil vents firestop/support components provide a 50mm clearance. At the maximum flue gas temperature of 250 C, the outer case will be in the region of 7585 C Gas vents normally have an aluminium liner and a Zalutite outer skin with an air cavity, and can be used both internally and externally. However long external runs must be avoided and where external runs exceed metres an insulated vent must be used. Oil vents normally have a stainless steel liner and are insulated. They are totally interchangeable with the gas vent without the need for adaptors. Any galvanised components used externally should be suitably weather protected. Within both ranges there are adjustable lengths which can be used to telescope over a standard pipe length to provide the exact flue lengths required. It should not be used directly after a bend since there is insufficient overlap to insure a sound joint. A wall band must be used above an adjustable length as this component is not load bearing. Always use an appliance connector to connect to the appliance, sealed using fibre rope and fire cement or high temperature silicone sealant. Support Components Internally run systems should be supported by using a support or ceiling support plate fixed on top of the floor/ceiling joists. Firestop plates are also required being fixed below the ceiling. Both components have purpose made lugs to ensure the 50mm distance to combustibles is maintained. Wall bands are not load bearing and give lateral support only. They should be fitted to ensure adequate support for the system. Rigid stays or guy wires must be used if the installation terminates higher than manufacturers recommendations. Appliance Removal Use of an adjustable length immediately above the appliance enables removal of the appliance later without dismantling the full system. Termination details for Gas and Oil Installations A B C D 1.5 metres horizontally clear of the roof surface and at least as high as the ridge on low pitched roofs. If terminating up to 600mm away from the ridge then the chimney should terminate at least 600mm above the ridge. If terminating directly through the ridge then the chimney should terminate at least 600mm above it. If the termination is located within 1.5 metres of an openable window or dormer, then it must terminate 600mm above the top of the opening. 2GAS VENTS

32 COMMERCIAL Installing Commercial Flue Systems? Think Plastic! We are all aware of the new lower emission requirements of today's high efficient condensing gas and oil appliances. However, due to the positive flue pressure these appliances create, the more traditional flue systems are not always an option. What is the effective solution that can also be used with centralised boiler systems? The solution is Plastic (Translucent Polypropylene) by Centrotherm. Due to the lower flue gas temperatures, our versatile pushfit, lightweight gas flue systems, suitable for any configuration of boilers (such as Cascade and CLV installations), are the perfect solution to the problem and have been sold and installed across Europe for many years with exceptionally positive results. The benefits to you when using Centrotherm include: Guaranteed longer lifespan than stainless steel. Pressure class of H1 suitable for up to 5000 Pa pressure operation as opposed to 200 Pa for most stainless steel systems. Swept bends made from one piece of plastic no more condensates collecting on welded stainless steel joints. Lightweight and easy to work with, can be cut to length on site without any special tools. Approval for use with all the major condensing boiler manufacturers. Cost effective In most cases up to 0% less than stainless steel or even more savings when using smaller diameters. Transparency of installed system leads to easy inspection during and after installation. Higher pressure resistance = reduced diameter when used with the Patented non return valve at the boiler connection. Therefore perfect when space is at a premium. Range includes rigid pipes in 80mm to 250mm diameters and flexible in 80, 110 and 160mm diameters from stock. Larger diameters available on request. Developed and tested with all the major European certification bodies. We have a wealth of technical knowledge and information on all flue applications, including not only the latest condensing systems, but also traditional stainless steel systems, backed up with industry leading service and support to guarantee your problems have solutions, saving you time, money and resources.
