5 PROGRAMMED ENERGY SAVINGS With the Aquasmart system, control of energy consumption becomes child s play. In fact, a simple, user-friendly program permits control of up to 128 terminals in 32 zones. Thus each zone has the desired temperature, taking into consideration the expectations of the occupants and the activities of the organisation. Minimum and maximum temperature values and fan speeds are individually adjustable by the occupant. This way everybody finds optimal comfort without paying too much. Comfort conditions set in. Each zone maintains a temperature of 21 C. Everyone can change this setting until noon. During the lunch-time break an economy mode is programmed, but during this time the occupant can reselect the occupied mode. The occupied mode restarts, applying the data selected by each occupant. The economy mode again takes effect. But each occupant can at any time reselect the occupied mode for one hour, if he/ she wants to stay longer in the office. When he/she leaves, the economy mode is again activated. 5

Moreover, as the compressor is protected by the autoadaptive Carrier-patented Pro-Dialog control system, a buffer tank is not required. And this means extra space and extra savings. ECOLOGY AT NO EXTRA COST Aquasnap was especially designed for the new ecological refrigerants: HFC 410Afor the Junior range and HFC 407C for the more powerful units. 7 CONTROL All Aquasnap units are equipped with Pro-Dialog control, which combines high efficiency with great operating simplicity. Pro-Dialog monitors all safety parameters and precisely controls the operation of compressor, fan and water pump for optimal energy usage. Based on the outdoor conditions Pro-Dialog adjusts the leaving water temperature and controls supplementary heating. The Aquasnap chiller permanently communicates with the System Manager via a simple, three-wire communication bus. The compact System Manager supervises, analyses and determines the equipment operating mode, based on the individual requirements of each occupant. Equipped with an 8-line matrix screen and a simplified keyboard with four menu keys, two up and down keys and four navigation keys, it ensures ease-of use. It has two access levels, one for the installer with security access and the other for the building supervisor to permit interrogation and modification of the time schedules and the zone set points. Within the limits set at installation, the CRC user interface allows each occupant to modify fan speed, set point temperature, motorised grille louvres and to change over from the Comfort to the Eco mode and vice-versa at any time. These simple and intuitive operations prevent misunderstandings that frequently require intervention from an installer. GUARANTEED EFFICIENCY FROM -10 C TO + 45 C No additional accessories! With the Pro-Dialog control system with intelligent fan speed control all Aquasnap liquid chillers operate down to -10 C. Whatever the climate, the Aquasnap 30RH heat pumps ensure normal hot water production. The patented, auto-adaptive Pro-Dialog control guarantees optimal reliability and increased heating capacity as well as perfect defrost cycle control. AIR DISTRIBUTION The technologies of the state-of-the-art fan, heat exchanger, acoustics and terminal unit size reduction are complemented by the addition of an electronic control system, guaranteeing precise and reliable control of each component. Depending on its configuration, each terminal unit can be supplied complete with valves, electric heater, condensate pump and temperature sensors, all factory-installed and tested. The electronic control is the same for each terminal unit type and configured and tested at the end of the assembly line. 7

8 AQUASMART SYSTEM TYPES Aquasmart is available in a number of adaptable configurations to best suit the application needs. Three that satisfy the most common applications are 2-pipe cooling only, 2-pipe changeover (with/without electric heaters in the terminals) and 4-pipe cooling and heating. 2-PIPE COOLING ONLY SYSTEMS This type of system is predominantly used where high internal gains are expected within the building or where there is some form of heating system already in use within the structure. The main challenge that designers face is the integration of the cooling and heating systems to prevent each competing with the other and therefore inefficiency in terms of space conditions and energy consumed during operating periods. Aquasmart manages these issues by: time schedule control of the boilers direct control of heating zone control valves or control of zones of under-floor heating linked to the local fan coil units. In either solution the system must be carefully zoned to prevent over-heating or over-cooling of the building. This type of direct integration has previously only been achievable using very complex and expensive BMS controls and is therefore found on larger systems and buildings. With the advent of part L building regulations and with future legislation addressing building operating costs it becomes more important than ever that 2-pipe cooling only systems are flexible and a totally integrated part of the air conditioning system of a building as is achievable today with AQUASMART. System type 2-pipe cooling only 2-PIPE COOLING AND HEATING SY The correct design and installation of this type of system can provide simultaneous heating and cooling in individual areas within a building. It lends itself ideally for offices, hotels, and restaurants up to 2500 m 2. The Aquasmart system offers total integration as it can monitor both heating and cooling demands from the building, enabling the system to choose the most suitable mode to meet the demand. To ensure optimum operation the system should be zoned with alike areas or needs grouped together. 9 STEMS WITH ELECTRIC HEATERS cooling whilst also allowing low-power electric heaters (0.750 kw) to provide heat to those areas demanding heating. If the demand for heating increases above the total input power of the heat pump, the system switches the unit to heat mode until the number of zones demanding heating reaches zero. In very cold temperatures (below 2-3 C) the system can use both hot water and electric heaters, the priority being given to water over electric heating. Temperature control for this type of system is paramount to occupant comfort, and Aquasmart installations can control space conditions to ± 1 K with lower energy consumption than systems using the latest direct-expansion technology. 4-PIPE HEATING & COOLING SYSTEMS This traditional system is generally used in larger building applications where the cost of installing boilers and chillers becomes more affordable within the overall system cost. The main challenge facing designers with the control of this system type is the integration of the cooling and heating plant to prevent each system competing against the other in the intermediate seasons. Now Aquasmart offers an integrated solution. The System Manager has been designed to manage either 2-pipe & 4-pipe systems and incorporating the fresh air handling unit and the boiler time clock control to ensure comfort within the building environment. Each fan coil unit controls its local space temperature through modulation of control valves and fan speed to achieve ideal conditions within the space. This flexibility and management means that Aquasmart can replace the more expensive Building Management Systems in many applications reducing the total system cost considerably. In addition, the communication and fault monitoring capabilities available to link fan coil units, chillers, air handling units and boilers make the Aquasmart system the ideal choice for this type of installation. 10 SYSTEM DESIGN CONSIDERATIO Any successful HVAC system depends upon a number of factors including correct and thoughtful design and installation. Some critical and frequently overlooked factors affecting the comfort of the occupants include building orientation, internal zoning, and of course the eventual use of the building. ZONING Zoning considerations should reflect a building s orientation as well as taking into account occupancy use and time schedules. Terminal units that serve zones with similar thermal characteristics will provide the best performance and comfort conditions. The same applies to units grouped on the same or similar time schedules. Examples of this practice would be to group areas such as photocopier facilities, open plan areas or offices taking into account the exposure to solar effect. COMPUTER ROOMS These areas typically require 24-hour cooling 7 days a week depending on the system chosen* for the application. Thought should be given as to whether to install a dedicated system. (* 2-pipe cooling only and not 2-pipe changeover!) Factors influencing this decision may include: the ratio of computer area cooling load to total system capacity and the building occupancy time schedule i.e.: normal office hours or 24-hour operation. INDOOR AIR QUALITY (IAQ) Comfort and good indoor air quality are mainly related to correct temperature and humidity control within the occupied space. AQUASMART controls space temperatures to ± 1 K. Research has shown that exposure to relative humidity below 35%, over long periods of time, leads to dryness in the eyes, nose and throat. In hydronic systems this problem does not exist. Good practice indicates that conditions between C / 50% RH winter and C / 50% RH summer are acceptable, and complaints increase substantially with variations exceeding 3 K. 11 NS SYSTEM ECONOMIES Predicting the actual annual energy consumption of any air conditioning system is a complex and difficult undertaking that needs to consider a number of inter-related factors. The building type, the building load profile, the system performance at part-load and off-design conditions and the local weather pattern all have a significant influence on the client's annual energy bills. Despite these difficulties, system designers are now obliged to make estimates of the energy consumption and to ensure that this meets certain targets. Unsurprisingly, the methodologies available for making these estimates are somewhat simplistic and tend to concentrate on the performance of the plant at the design condition. 12 INSTALLATION INNOVATION Aquasmart is a hydronic solution, compatible with traditional materials and practices, whilst allowing designers and installers to innovate and benefit from the latest technologies and advances in materials and installation practices. Two examples include the use of high-density polyethylene (HDP) pipework material and the latest water distribution system technologies. Both combine to offer reduced installation material and labour time costs. HIGH-DENSITY POLYETHYLENE (HDP) PIPEWORK This is a flexible material with a 25-year minimum lifetime guarantee offering low friction loss and no corrosion. A flexible material benefits from a reduction in the number of elbows and fittings required and that means a reduced risk of leaks. Additionally the simplified installation techniques are less demanding than for traditional materials whilst offering the same level of quality. The resulting time savings, combined with the flexibility of the material make it ideal for refurbishment projects. 22 INSTALLATION INNOVATION PIPEWORK SIZING AND INSTALLATION Following the selection of the fan coil and chiller unit(s) the next stage in a typical process is the choice and sizing of pipework materials. Normal practice is to firstly select the pipework from manifold to fan coil units. The following table is a quick selection guide and includes polyethylene materials where generally 35 mm, 25 mm, 20 mm or 16 mm O.D. is used. 23 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS HOW EFFICIENT IS AN AQUASMART SYSTEM? The Aquasmart system has been developed to incorporate the latest energy saving technologies which has allowed the system to achieve a power saving of 8 W/m 2 versus a similar direct-expansion solution (refer to page 11 for further details). HOW ACCURATE IS THE ROOM TEMPERATURE CONTROL? Using a chilled-water solution enables the system to achieve room temperature control of ± 1 K at normal operating conditions (refer to page 4 for further details). DOES THE SYSTEM HAVE AN OPTIMISED START ROUTINE? Yes - each individual time/temperature zone can be set up for SMART START which is an auto-adaptive algorithm starting the air conditioner early enough to ensure that the room condition is achieved at occupancy. WHAT IS DEFINED AS AN AQUASMART ZONE? The System Manager can be programmed with up to 32 different zones. Each of these zones can be programmed with: Occupied set point and dead band Unoccupied set point and dead band Start time ON Stop time OFF Holiday period OFF with frost protection working A zone can include one fan coil unit or up to 128 fan coil units. CAN EACH FAN COIL BE SWITCHED OFF MANUALLY? Each fan coil is equipped with the ability to be switched from occupied to unoccupied mode via a pair of volt-free contacts. This is ideal for use with hotel room switch cards or meeting rooms that are not used very often. CAN THE SYSTEM BE MONITORED VIA A MAIN PC, IF NECESSARY? Yes - the system can be integrated with any BMS system via a Carrier data port, or we can provide BMS system software with graphics options, if required. CAN CARRIER CONTROL OTHER HVAC EQUIPMENT? Yes - via a CCN control system, which is able to run any HVAC equipment from boilers, pumps, fans etc. 23

26 CASE STUDIES BHS BHS requires total reliability of performance and the knowledge that a defined specification can be duplicated accurately time and again in store after store. The latest BHS stores at Meadowhall, Sheffield, Ocean Terminal, Leith outside Edinburgh, and Uxbridge in the Home Counties have all had Aquasmart air conditioning systems installed to provide completely controllable environmental comfort for shoppers. Many aspects of Aquasmart attracted the specifier, the BHS Construction and Development Department. In their view it is the most environmentally-friendly system on the market. The reasons: This is water-based cooling with no refrigerant in the conditioned space. Materials are recyclable The system efficiency saves high percentages of energy compared with alternative solutions. And the manufacturing source has won environmental awards. It s nice for everyone. The system has been problem-free. It s never on my list of concerns. BHS sets all parameters centrally. In the Meadowhall store there is a restaurant with all its heat and odour, but a negative pressure zone is in effect and the system copes very well, and eliminates these problems. BROOMIELAW Nine Aquasmart two-pipe cooling systems were chosen for a landmark speculative commercial building on the WideClydeside development in Glasgow. The property development firm, Walker Group, working with consulting engineers Henderson Warnock, were attracted to Aquasmart by the flexibility and adaptability of the system, providing air conditioned comfort to any layout chosen by the tenants, whilst the Aquasmart System Manager ensures optimised system performance and reduced running costs. The contractor, N G Bailey, benefits from fan coil solutions delivered to site with controls and valves pre-fitted and factory tested, whilst the Aquasnap chillers include the hydronic module with pumps and pressurisation units reducing installation time and labour. 26

27 CAPITAL & COUNTIES Two split systems were replaced by an Aquasmart system to provide flexible, energy-efficient comfort to meeting rooms in the London offices of Liberty International plc. Liberty is the parent of successful London-based retail and commercial property business, Capital and Counties. The system, comprising an Aquasnap heat pump chiller and four cassette fan coils, is managed by the Aquasmart System Manager offering the flexibility to partition the meeting room and still ensure comfort conditions for all the occupants. To achieve the same level of comfort with traditional split systems, it would have been necessary to install at least one small BMS system. said Mr Hutchins the engineering manager for Capital & Counties. That would have added to the initial cost and over-complicated this small installation. Aquasmart was the most cost-effective solution. UNILEVER The Aquasmart system was the perfect solution to the challenge of providing sophisticated and flexible air conditioning in a refurbished 1960s building. The Grade II listed building was already served by an existing induction system and Carrier Global Chiller, and the new Aquasmart systems have been installed to meet the additional load of the recent office expansion. The Aquasnap chiller profile is low enough to meet strict local planning regulations, and the chiller supplies twenty-three cassettes serving the core office area and individual meeting rooms. Both chiller and terminal units were supplied respectively with factory-fitted hydronic components, tested and configured to operate as a system, optimising performance and hence running costs. The system, comprising an Aquasnap chiller and twentyfour cassette fan coils, is managed by the Aquasmart System Manager, offering the flexibility to partition the meeting room and still ensure comfort conditions for all the occupants. According to Steve Willett, Technical Manager: We have worked together with Carrier for many years and value the company s ability to generate new ideas and the right products. The Aquasmart system has proved the right solution to the various challenges we faced from local planning regulations, flexibility and controllability needs and of course environmental responsibility which is so important to us all here at Unilever. 27
