25 Narrowed Down Concepts 24
26 Result Research showed that Fountain Alley is an area in the heart of downtown San Jose in dire need of activation. It is the location of many negative activities including Drug Deals and Homicides. Following the lead of other areas in San Jose that have undergone a public activation, we began to ideate, searching for ideas that we could present to the community. 25

35 Result These sketches represent the results culled from our previous 50 ideas. We picked interesting ideas from those and continued to define what the community would be interested in at Fountain Alley. All these sketches were brought to the Co-Design workshop, and helped community members generate their own ideas for Fountain Alley. 34
36 Co-Design Workshop 35
37 Community members chose sketches and came up with their own ideas for Fountain Alley. The top 5 pictures show their ideas, and we continued to develop these ideas. 36

42 Result Based on these sketches, we picked 5 concepts that most re ected the community s wants, including the mushroom seating, Noodle chair, sliding seats, Hammock and SJFA rocking chair. We used these sketches as our inspiration to created 5 full size mock ups and test the size, aesthetic, and scale of our ideas at Fountain Alley. 41
43 Refine Sketches 42
44 Initial Mock up The community ended up really liking our sliding chairs because they encourage communication and interaction among people. They also like the functionality of the design, because it makes the chair easy to clean, easy to take care of, and prevents vandalism. 43
45 Phase 3 Refine and Build 44
46 Prototype to CAD We tried a visualizing our prottype as if it were in Fountain Alley. We picked some interesting ideas from those, and continued to define what the community would be interested at to put at Fountain Alley. All these sketches were brought to the Co- Design workshop, and helped community members to generate their own ideas for Fountain Alley. 45

53 Result The physical mockup helped us realize that the corners of the half circle shape were too sharp, even at 1/4 scale. The decision was made to include gradually increasing fillets to address this ergonomic issue. 52

59 Creating these full scale mockups helped the team come to a decision about the thickness of the slots. We put in to consideration the visual apeal and comfortability of both 0.5 and 1 slots, as well as the optimal distance between each piece. 58

62 Phase 4 Final Design 61
63 Final Presentation We presented our final model to the community at Fountain Alley. We had some very good feedback from the community, such as making slightly different shapes for the chairs, and making the chair able to rock. 62
