4 APPLE BOX SEATING UNIQUE SEATING AND PLAY ELEMENT THAT REFLECTS THE HISTORY OF THE SITE AND FUNCTION OF THE BUILDING. OVERSIZED PROPORTIONS ALLOW FOR THE BOXES TO BE USED AS INFORMAL SEATING AND CLIMBING STRUCTURE AND EVENT SEATING. CERTAIN BOXES WILL HAVE UNIQUE ORCHARD BASED ARTIFACTS LOCKED INSIDE TO BE REVEALED ON SPECIAL EVENTS WITH STAFF PRESENT. MINI BOX CARS THE RAIL SWITCHING HISTORY OF THIS SITE IS UNIQUE TO WESTERN CANADA. BOX CARS WERE SHUNTED BY HORSE THEN BY TRUCK. THESE REPLICA MINI BOX CARS ARE A REFLECTION OF THAT HISTORY AND AIM TO SHOW THE NECESSITY FOR RAIL SWITCHING AS WELL AS THE COMPLEXITY OF THE RAIL YARDS. FILLED WITH EITHER FRUIT, OTHER CHILDREN OR SMALLER APPLES BOXES DECORATED CHILDREN, THESE BOX CARS CAN BE BROUGHT OUT ON SPECIAL EVENTS AND CAN BE PUSHED AND PULLED AROUND, THUS ENCOURAGING TEAMWORK AND ACTIVITY WHILE LEARNING. THEY ARE STORED UNDER THE WOOD DECK BEHIND HEAVY GAUGE STEEL AND MESH ALLOWING PEOPLE TO SEE UNDER THE DECK BUT WITHOUT ACCESS. HAND PUMP & WATER SPOUT UNIQUE WATER PLAY ELEMENT THAT REFERENCES THE IRRIGATION PAST WHILE CREATING A FUN AND ACTIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE. THE SEPARATION OF PUMP AND SPOUT ACTIVATES A LARGER PORTION OF THE COURTYARD AND ENCOURAGES TEAMWORK. USED IN CORRELATION WITH THE DIY FLUME ELEMENTS, KIDS CAN SEE HOW FAR THE CAN MOVE WATER FROM THE SOURCE INTO THE COURTYARD, REFLECTING THE ORIGINAL ACT OF IRRIGATION FLUMES IN THE OKANAGAN VALLEY. DIY FLUME KIT CAN BE STORED AWAY AND BROUGHT OUT FOR EVENTS, SCHOOL GROUPS AND TOURS. RAIL TIE BENCH BUILT 8 FEET LONG TO REFERENCE THE LENGTH OF RAILWAY TIES, THIS IS A SIMPLE AND STURDY BENCH THAT REFLECTS THE HISTORY OF THE SITE WITH A WOOD TOP ELEMENT THAT REPRESENTS A RAIL TIE. INTERACTIVE ELEMENTS ARE EMBEDDED INTO THE BENCH THAT OFFER LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES ABOUT THE OKANAGAN AND KEY PEOPLE AND PLACES. SITE FURNITURE/ HISTORIC PLAY ELEMENTS
5 OPTION 1: LED RAIL LINES OPTION 1: LED RAIL SPIKES LIGHTING IS A VERY KEY COMPONENT TO THE SUCCESS OF ANY ACTIVE URBAN SPACE. IT HAS THE ABILITY TO CREATE A MOOD, EVOKE SAFETY, AND ADD EXTRA HOURS OF ENJOYMENT TO A SPACE. IN CERTAIN UNIQUE CIRCUMSTANCES IT ALSO HAS THE ABILITY TO EDUCATE AS WELL AS BECOME AND ARTISTIC ELEMENT. LIGHTING IN THE LAUREL PACKING HOUSE COURTYARD IS ONE OF THOSE UNIQUE CIRCUMSTANCES. THROUGH A SERIES OF TRADITIONAL PEDESTRIAN LIGHTS, DOWN LIGHTING AND ARCHITECTURAL BASED LIGHTING, THE OVERALL SAFETY OF THE SITE WILL BE IMPROVED WHILE IT BECOMES A MORE WELCOME AND INVITING SPACE. WITH AN ADDITIONAL LAYER OF LIGHTING WE CAN ACHIEVE AN EVEN MORE UNIQUE A SITE SPECIFIC URBAN DESIGN AND EDUCATIONAL ELEMENT. BY LIGHTING UP THE RAILWAY TRACK LINES WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO ACHIEVE A RARE PHENOMENA OF EDUCATING AND INTERACTING WITH PEOPLE AT THE COURTYARD LEVEL AS WELL AS HIGH RISE RESIDENTS IN THE SURROUNDING TOWERS. CREATING A UNIQUE LIGHT MAP IT IS CLEAR TO ANYONE AT NIGHT ON THE SIDEWALK OR HIGHER UP THAT THIS SPACE WAS AN OLD RAIL LINE. THE LIGHTS WOULD DRAW PEOPLE INTO THE SPACE WHILE PASSING BY, CREATE UNIQUE MOMENTS FOR PLAY AND REFLECT THE SITE HISTORY. OPTION 1: LED RAIL LINES: EMBEDDED WITHIN THE METAL RAIL OPTION. THIS OPTION WOULD BE THE MOST DRAMATIC AND LITERAL REPRESENTATION OF THE OLD RAIL LINES. SIMILAR DETAIL WOULD BE INCORPORATED INTO THE WOOD SEATING AS NECESSARY. OPTION 2: LED RAIL SPIKES: EMBEDDED INTO THE CONCRETE. ROUND LED LIGHTS WOULD REPLICATED THE RAIL LINES BUT IN A MORE SUBTLE WAY. THE ROUND NATURE OF THE LIGHTS WOULD REFERENCE THE RAIL SPIKES AND COULD PLAY AS PART OF A LARGER INITIATIVE BY THE CITY OF KELOWNA TO PLACE A SERIES OF SPIKES THROUGHOUT THE CITY SHOWING OTHER RAIL LINES. OPTION 3: NON LIT RAILS OPTION 3: NOT LIT RAILS: LACKING ANY SORT OF WAY TO DISTINGUISH THE RAIL LOCATIONS AFTER DARK, AN LARGE OPPORTUNITY MAY BE LOST AFTER SUNSET OR WINTER. HEAT FROM THE LIGHTS COULD MELT SMALL AMOUNTS OF SNOW AND SHOW THE LINES THROUGH THE SEASONS. THIS OPTION IS STILL AS SAFE AND WELCOMING AS OTHERS BUT MAY LACK A REAL ABILITY TO HIGHLIGHT THE SITE SPECIFIC HISTORY THROUGHOUT THE DAY, NIGHT AND SEASONS. LIGHTING OPTIONS
