1 HOMEPAGEM Q SPRING 2016 A PUBLICATION OF LONGWOOD AT HOME Longwood at Home is Western Pennsylvania s only licensed Continuing Care at Home program. It provides the care and financial benefits of a Continuing Care Retirement Community for those who prefer to remain in their own homes and maintain their current lifestyle. In This Issue Feature Article 1-3 Seminars 4-5 Tax Time Member Benefits 6 Healthy Living 7 Longwood at Home 1215 Hulton Road Oakmont, PA Longwood at Home Welcomes South Hills Team Longwood at Home is proud to regularly feature exemplary members in our HomePage newsletters, however, with the new year, we are offering a fresh change. Growth has been steady over Longwood at Home s first thirteen years but 2015 was a period of expansion. Our service area includes Allegheny and contiguous counties, but the past two years have produced increased interest and membership in the South Hills suburbs and Washington County. Continued Longwood at Home is an affiliate of Presbyterian SeniorCare 1
2 To cultivate that growth, Longwood at Home is pleased to introduce two new employees, dedicated exclusively to building and servicing Longwood at Home membership in that area. Tammy Rile joined Longwood at Home as a Retirement Living Specialist in March A Peters Township resident, Tammy has lived most of her life in the area and understands the unique qualities and expectations of the Washington County population. Tammy has a passion for working with older adults, and has worked in the Continuing Care Retirement Community business for the past 12 years, most recently at a large community in Scott Township. Growth has been steady over Longwood at Home s first thirteen years but 2015 was a period of expansion. Tammy is dedicated to her clients, learning how they envision their long term care needs being met and assisting them in selecting the most appropriate Longwood at Home plan to provide care for a lifetime. Tammy s experience in the retirement community business affords her the ability to understand the challenges of moving from the home that a client loved to a community setting. She knows that continuing care at home is the wave of the future, but to be successful the older adult must have a stellar plan that addresses financial protection, excellent care coordination to navigate the process of aging, and the support of the very best provider of elder care in western Pennsylvania. Tammy has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Waynesburg University. Her daughter teaches in the Canon McMillan School District while her son is a high school student in Peters Township. After Tammy enrolls a member of Longwood at Home, she is happy to share that person with Jean Royse, our newest Care Coordinator, serving the South Hills and Washington County. Jean is a native of Kansas, who has lived in Washington County for the past 30 years. A graduate of California University of Pennsylvania, with a Bachelor of Science in Communication Disorders, she has 2 Longwood at Home
3 been employed by our parent company, Presbyterian SeniorCare for 13 years. Jean holds a CNA certification, has served as our volunteer coordinator, and for the past three years was business manager for Presbyterian SeniorCare at Home. As a Longwood at Home care coordinator, Jean develops relationships with her members in a very personal yet professional manner. From Day One Jean nurtures those relationships with each member, via home visits and phone calls. She understands not only their medical history, but also their life, faith and work history, so that as health changes occur, she can z be responsive to needs in the most immediate, empathetic and efficient manner possible. Longwood at Home s five personal care coordinators have been described as advocates, supporters, friends, cheerleaders, partners and even warriors, supporting members needs and lifting the burden of care from family members and loved ones. Jean has embraced that role and has already become a valued addition to our team. She has three children, who live in Tacoma, Washington, Danville, Pennsylvania, and Charleston, South Carolina. Jean looks forward to the long term relationships that she is developing with her Longwood at Home members. 6 Tax Time Can Bring Extra Benefits to Members There are three main benefits members cite as to why they joined Longwood at Home. Protection of financial assets is primary. When looking at the skyrocketing costs of long term care, including an average of $22 an hour for home health care with a three-hour minimum, costs add up fast. Or, who wants to pay $9,000 a month out of pocket for a nursing home for two or three years? Longwood at Home members will not pay those costs. Longwood at Home members know that they will receive the care they need now and in the future regardless of the skyrocketing costs of health care. Second, maintaining their independence without burdening family or friends. Longwood at Home members are assigned a personal care coordinator who develops a relationship with them on day one. Members turn to the care coordinator for help, advice and access to the best care available. No matter where they are or the time of day, help is a phone call away. Though family and friends are willing to help, it is great for members to be able to be in control of their own care and remain independent with the help of their care coordinator. 6 Longwood at Home Third, members chose Longwood at Home because they want to remain at home. Home could be the house where they raised their family for 50 years, the patio home where they downsized or the villa in Florida where the snowbirds live for a few months a year. Longwood at Home has a great track record for keeping members at home even when they need a high level of care. Come April, many Longwood at Home members realize another benefit tax savings. One hundred percent of the Gold and Bronze entrance fees can be allocated as a medical expense. Platinum members receive a tax allocation of 10% of the membership fee. Platinum members receive 90% of their entrance fees back upon death or disenrollment. This year 82% of monthly fees can be allocated as a medical expense which is a great benefit. Longwood at Home is not giving tax advice and suggests talking to your personal tax advisor. In summary, it is clear the tax allocation can become another important benefit for members. So, why not join today to start gaining tax benefits while having financial protection and care coordination all in the comfort of your own home?
7 HEALTHY LIVING zpreventing Falls and Fractures A simple fall can change your life. The following tips from the National Institute on Aging can help you take care of your overall health and wellbeing and reduce your risk of falling: Ask your doctor about a bone mineral density test that can tell you how strong your bones are. If necessary, new medications can be prescribed to help make your bones stronger and harder to break. Speak with your doctor about an exercise program that is right for you to help keep you strong and improve your muscle tone. Have your vision and hearing tested often. Even small changes in sight and hearing can make you less stable. Use a cane, walking stick or walker to help you feel steadier when you walk, especially in areas you don t know well or in places where walkways are uneven. 7
