The 2010 survey questions were revised and updated with the assistance of Amelia LoDolce, Sustainable Development Planner for the City of Binghamton and member of VINES 1, and were distributed using Survey Monkey. From survey responses, , phone, face-to-face conversations and independent research, the following information was collected for City of Binghamton/Broome County. There are currently five community gardens comprised of 18,545 sq. ft. 2 of land and 60 Earth Boxes 3, several of which intend to expand in 2011; two urban farms containing 14,490 sq. ft. 4, and two gardening projects (including the Liberty Orchard Park) comprised of approximately 68,490 sq. ft. (1.8 acres) and 130 Earth Boxes active at various other locations in the City of Binghamton under the CHOW Grow Broome project (for which the boxes are located at sponsor sites that have the potential to change on a yearly basis). Potential for Further Research As recommended in the 2009 survey report, research on gardens/farms in all of Broome County and in the adjacent counties was conducted for the 2010 survey report (data for 2010). This information will be used as measurement data for the 2011 FaHN Food System Assessment. The survey will include Cortland County next year as FaHN decided mid-2011 to include this county in its region. Related to community gardens/farms, the numbers and characteristics of neighborhood gardens (closely related to community gardens but without traditional plot distinctions), school/educational gardens, institutional gardens, and home gardens would also be useful as indicators for the FaHN Food System Assessment and will be tied into the Community Garden and Urban Agriculture Initiatives inventory. This expanded information would also be useful to measure the potential impact of new agriculture-friendly zoning legislation that may be approved by the City of Binghamton this year and any future policy or zoning changes in other communities in the geographic range of FaHN. 7
