1 Mathematics Alignment Lesson Grade 5 Quarter 3 Day 117 Common Core State Standard(s) 5.NF.4 Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction. 5.NF.6 Solve real world problems involving multiplication of fractions and mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Standards for Mathematical Practice Standard 2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Standard 7 Look for and make use of structure. Standard 8 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. Materials Needed: Transparencies/Blackline Masters- Dessert Party Mix Dilemma, Dessert Party Mix Dilemma Instructions Alignment Lesson Mixed Multiplication Review 1. Display & Distribute Transparency/Blackline Master, Dessert Party Mix Dilemma and read over the letter from Ms. Kellan as a class. Discuss what the letter is asking students to do and explain that students will work with a partner or in a small group to complete this activity during today s lesson. 2. Display & Distribute (and leave up) Transparency/Blackline Master, Dessert Party Mix Dilemma Instructions and review the instructions as a class. If possible, leave these instructions up while students are working. 3. Once student pairs/groups have completed their work and have their letters written, select student leaders from each pair/group to share their work. Discuss similarities and differences between how various pairs/groups found the amounts needed for each ingredient. If it isn t brought up with student presentations, make sure to ask students how they determined what to multiply the amount of each ingredient by for the various serving sizes needed. 4. Assign homework Blackline Master, Multiplying Fractions Mixed Review Homework to reinforce what they ve learned so far in this unit. Assessment Informally assess student pairs/groups as they present their letters to Ms. Kellan. 2 Dear Employee, Transparency/Blackline Master Grade 5 Day 117 Dessert Party Mix Dilemma Standards 5.NF.4, 5. NF.6 I d like your help with something. I have three different recipes for dessert party mix for an upcoming party I m planning and I don t have time to figure out how much of each ingredient I need. One problem is that all of these recipes only serve 4 people and there will be 8, 10 or 14 guests at the party. I need you to figure out how much of each ingredient I need for each recipe to serve 8, 10 or 14 people. This way, when I finally know how many guests I need to serve, I can just use your information and go buy the ingredients. Oh, and one other thing, I like to give each party host a bag of the each dessert party mix to sample so I ll also need to know how many of each ingredient is needed to make enough for just two people for each recipe. Please have this information to me by tomorrow. Thank you, Ms. Kellan Party Planner Dessert Party Mix Recipe 1 ½ cup of M & Ms 1 1/3 cup of pretzels ¾ cup of peanuts 2/5 cup of marshmallows Makes 4 servings Dessert Party Mix Recipe 2 1 ¾ cups of crushed Oreos 2 ½ cups of pretzels 4/5 cup of dried fruit ¾ cup of marshmallows Makes 4 servings Dessert Party Mix Recipe 3 2/3 cup of chocolate chips 2 ½ cups of pretzels 1 ¼ cups of Butterfinger pieces 3 1/6 cups of popcorn Makes 4 servings

3 Transparency/Blackline Master Grade 5 Day 117 Standards 5.NF.4, 5. NF.6 Dessert Party Mix Dilemma Instructions Your Task: Work with your partner or group to determine the amount of each ingredient needed for each recipe for each number of guests Be sure to record your work on a sheet of paper Once you ve determined the amount of each ingredient needed, write a letter to Ms. Kellan to provide her with this information Make sure your letter includes the following: The amount of each ingredient needed for each number of guests (you may want to organize this in a table) An explanation of how you got your answers (ex: What did you do to decide the amount of each ingredient to make enough for 2 people? 8? 10? 14?) Be prepared to share your letter with the class

4 Answer Key Grade 5 Day 117 Standards 5.NF.4, 5. NF.6 Dessert Party Mix Dilemma Answer Key Dear Ms. Kellan, Thank you for entrusting me to help you with figuring this out! I included a table for each recipe you gave me. The table shows how much you need of each ingredient in order to make 2, 8, 10 and 14 servings. Dessert Party Mix Recipe 1 Ingredient Mix for 4 Mix for 2 Mix for 8 Mix for 10 M & Ms ½ cup ¼ cup 1 cup 1 ¼ cups 1 ¾ cups Mix for 14 pretzels 1 1/3 cups 2/3 cup 2 2/3 cups 3 1/3 cups 4 2/3 cups peanuts ¾ cup 3/8 cup 1 ½ cups 1 7/8 cups 2 5/8 cups marshmallows 2/5 cup 1/5 cup 4/5 cups 1 cup 1 2/5 cups Dessert Party Mix Recipe 2 Ingredient Mix for 4 Mix for 2 Mix for 8 Mix for 10 Mix for 14 Oreos 1 ¾ 7/8 cup 3 ½ cups 4 3/8 cups 6 1/8 cups pretzels 2 ½ 1 ¼ cups 5 cups 6 ¼ cups 8 ¾ cups dried fruit 4/5 2/5 cups 1 3/5 cups 2 cups 2 4/5 cups marshmallows ¾ 3/8 cups 1 ½ cups 1 7/8 cups 2 5/8 cups Dessert Party Mix Recipe 3 Ingredient Mix for 4 Mix for 2 Mix for 8 Mix for 10 Mix for 14 Chocolate 2/3 1/3 cup 1 1/3 cups 1 2/3 cups 2 1/3 cups chips pretzels 2 ½ 1 ¼ cups 5 cups 6 ¼ cups 8 ¾ cups Butterfinger 1 ¼ 5/8 cup 2 ½ cups 3 1/8 cups 4 3/8 cups pieces popcorn 3 1/6 1 7/12 cups 6 1/3 cups 7 11/12 cups 11 1/12 cups To figure out how much was needed for 2 people, I multiplied the amount needed for 4 people by ½ since you only need to make half of a batch (dividing by 2 is the same thing as multiplying by ½). For 8 people I just doubled the ingredient amount that was listed in the recipe that served 4 people. To make enough for 10 people you have to multiply each ingredient in the recipe by 2 ½ since 4 times 2 ½ is equal to 10. To make enough for 14 people you have to multiply each ingredient in the recipe by 3 ½ since 4 times 3 ½ is equal to 14.
