6 Growing Practices & Sustainability Efforts The process of growing native plants is not only cutting edge, but unique when compared to growing conventional landscape plants. At Pizzo Native Plant Nursery our expert growers execute the entire growing cycle from seed harvest to germination and then cultivation of our finished product. Along with imitating nature s cycle for our production methods, here are a few more examples of our growing practices and sustainability efforts. For more in-depth information please visit the Resources page on our website. Integrative Pest Management Solutions / Biological Controls An integrated pest management approach combined with best management practices is implemented at the nursery. Biological controls such as beneficial insects, bacterial nematodes, and fungal applications are used. Mycorrhizal Inoculant All plants are inoculated with over 15 different species of mycorrhizal fungi. This aids in decreasing moisture and fertilizer requirements while increasing plant vigor and pest resistance. Pollinator Insects Along with our pesticide-free landscape, several bee hives provide us with a delicious source of honey and improved seed production. Composting All organic waste produced by the nursery is composted on-site and used as a soil amendment on land improvement projects. Spot Watering / Zone Irrigation To reduce water consumption and minimize run off, Pizzo Native Plant Nursery utilizes various watering techniques such as pulse irrigation with a state of the art system for precise and efficient watering. On-site Water Recycling Irrigation water is cleansed and recycled in our 15-acre wetland where it percolates to recharge our groundwater. This practice eliminates the use of all chemical applications and energy consuming filtration systems commonly used when water is captured in reservoirs. Plastics Recycling All nursery plastic is recycled or reused. We encourage you to return your plastic trays to us, please contact us for more information on this service. Fuel Consumption At Pizzo Native Plant Nursery we work with the seasons to cultivate plants, thus replacing manmade inputs with natural ones such as the sun s radiant energy. Pizzo Companies sales vehicles are hybrids which boast miles per gallon. Fertilizer Consumption Instead of inorganic fertilizers our potting media is inoculated with thousands of beneficial micro organisms. A long-term slow release fertilizer is used as needed. 4 Pizzo Native Plant Nursery 3rd Edition Product Guide

12 PRODUCTS & SERVICES Macrochelys temminckii (Alligator Snapping Turtle) By designing resilient landscapes with native plants, we provide solutions to some of these problems. These beautiful, ecologically balanced landscapes have numerous benefits: Infiltration of stormwater Improve surface and ground water quality Stop erosion Increase aesthetic value Reduce landscape maintenance costs and the need for fertilizer, irrigation, and chemicals Improve biodiversity Increase game populations Increase habitat size Create educational and interpretive opportunities Solve nuisance wildlife problems Reduce heat island effect Mitigate global climate change Why is it Important to Use Native Plants? At Pizzo we are passionate about creating healthy eco-landscapes and have dedicated our careers to help others do the same. We believe planting natives is the right thing to do and will benefit future generations by preserving our valuable natural resources. We understand there are places and situations for non-native species in gardens and collections for enjoyment, however, our vision is for landscapes to contain a heavier percentage of native plant species. Why Native Plantings are Part of the Solution! Over the last two to three hundred years our landscape has changed dramatically from a vast interconnected ecosystem to a patchwork of remnant open space parcels surrounded by urbanization. This has resulted in flooding, eroded topsoil, and loss of habitat for important native insects and wildlife. Highly maintained unsustainable landscapes require harmful chemicals along with millions of gallons of water to keep them alive. On top of that, climate change has resulted in more frequent and intensive storm events which have placed greater constraints on our already overburdened stormwater infrastructure. Whether you are working on several acres or a typical suburban or city lot, we can help you develop a beautiful, dynamic, and interactive landscape that will reduce natural resource consumption and improve the health of your home, workplace, and community. Be part of the solution and call us to learn more about your role. 10 Pizzo Native Plant Nursery 3rd Edition Product Guide

16 pizzo superior seed mixes What Makes Our Seed Mixes So Special? Years of scientific expertise in the restoration ecology business have resulted in the development of the following seed mix specifications. Combined with responsible installation and stewardship practices, our seed mixes are developed for success. We highly recommend that each seed mix be supplemented with the recommended plug list provided on each specification sheet to add diversity, color, and resilience to the long-term health of your ecosystem. These seed lists can double as plug species lists. Please visit our website for up-to-date annual seed lists and specifications along with the recommended plug species to install along with your seed. Pizzo s Low Profile Prairie Seed Mix A diverse collection of shorter-profile prairie grass and wildflower species and is designed for sunny areas that remain mesic-dry for most of the growing season. Most of the species are 3 or less and its attractiveness lies in the sequence of vibrant flower color throughout the seasons. Pizzo s Tallgrass Prairie Seed Mix Liatris spicata (Marsh Blazing Star) Composed of tall-profile grass and forb prairie species suited for sunny areas that remain mesicdry for most of the growing season. Most of this mix includes a rich array of wildflowers that bloom from April through October and an element of added height that captures the diversity and aesthetic of the classic tallgrass prairie. 14 Pizzo Native Plant Nursery 3rd Edition Product Guide

17 Pizzo s Economy Prairie Seed Mix The most economical way to establish an ecologically functional prairie while maintaining the high aesthetic value Pizzo is known for. This mix includes quickestablishing prairie species for a more immediate naturalized setting in sunny areas that remain mesic-dry for the most of the growing season. Pizzo s Dry Bottom Detention Basin Mix This medium height sun prairie species mix is great for plantings in dry-bottom detention basins, detention basin slopes, dry bottom bioswales, large rain gardens, and open floodplains that flood for periods of time ranging from hours but remain mesic-dry for the remainder of the season. Pizzo s Dune,, and Hill Prairie Seed Mix A mix of species typically associated with highly specialized ecosystems such as sand prairies, hill prairies, and dune ecosystems of Lake Michigan including Black Oak savannas. Because of its application it can be customized for your needs but overall is suited for sunny areas with sandy soils that remain dry for most of the growing season. Pizzo s Savanna Seed Mix A mix designed for areas with scattered native trees (typically 5-7 trees/acre) that provide light-part shade and have soils that remain mesic-dry for most of the growing season. This mix will help establish a historic, native, short to medium ground matrix re-creating the picturesque open tree savannas that were so heavily sought after by the pioneers as they made their way west. Pizzo s Seed Mix Designed for areas with moderate-dense native tree populations (10+ trees/acre) that have a mostly closed canopy and a light-moderate understory tree/shrub layer providing part-full shade and that have soils which remain mesic for most of the growing season. This short-medium height species mix will establish a diverse herbaceous understory that provides habitat and a fuel source for conducting regular prescribed fire. Pizzo Native Plant Nursery 3rd Edition Product Guide 15

18 Pizzo s Wooded Floodplain Seed Mix Designed for areas with moderate-dense native tree populations (10+ trees/acre) that have a mostly closed canopy and a light-moderate understory tree/shrub layer providing part-full shade and that flood periodically for short periods of time ranging from hours, but remain wet-mesic for most of the growing season. This medium-tall height species mix will establish an herbaceous understory providing erosion control, habitat, and a fuel source for conducting regular prescribed fire. Pizzo s Wet-Mesic Prairie Seed Mix Designed for sunny areas that are moist to fairly wet without drying out completely. Certain species in this mix can take consistently saturated soils. Selected species tend to vary in height but all prefer to be in sunny areas. Pizzo s Wetland Seed Mix Designed for consistently saturated soil that does not dry out or areas with shallow standing water (up to 2 of consistent water depth). In addition to the traditional wetland application, this short-medium profile mix is also ideal for use directly adjacent to the water line of pond and stream shorelines where the soil remains saturated and the water level consistently fluctuates 1-2. To compliment the dark green sedge and sedge-like species are an array of wildflowers which bloom from April through October. Pizzo s Emergent Seed Mix Ideal for shallow water wetlands 2 to 6 deep and within the emergent zone of a pond or stream shoreline. The mix is mainly comprised of sedges which allow for a dark green aesthetic complimented by wildflowers which provide an array of blooms from May through October. This mix must be planted prior to establishing normal water levels, or the water body must be drained in order to expose the soil prior to seeding. We recommend installing a temporary erosion control blanket over newly seeded areas. Buffalo Grass Lawn (Dry-Mesic) An alternative to traditional highmaintenance turf grass. This cultivar is designed to survive in colder climates and unlike traditional high-maintenance turf grass, Buffalo Grass is a slow grower reaching a maximum height of 4-8 requiring little or no mowing or water. A warm-season grass that will go dormant (turns golden brown) in the fall and takes approximately a month longer to green-up in the spring when compared to traditional turf grass. Transitional Buffer This specialized mix is designed as a short-grass native planting that can be installed between low, flat areas such as turf and sidewalks and functions as a structural border for the taller, more diverse prairie areas. Designed for easy maintenance, while providing year round aesthetic. Available in both a mesic to wet mix as well as dry to mesic mix. 16 Pizzo Native Plant Nursery 3rd Edition Product Guide

The use of plugs provides higher rates of survivability and quicker establishment of your natural area or garden. Shoreline Plants Native plants provide a long lasting solution for shoreline erosion. Expensive rip rap needs periodic replacement and mowing turf grass down to the water s edge creates significant and expensive shoreline damage. The species are to be planted closest to or in the shallow water. Many of these plants have rhizomatus root systems that form mats which keep the shoreline intact, provide shelter for wildlife, clean the storm water runoff before it enters the water, and deter geese from populating the shoreline.
