Success Story Success Story Sl No 1 RAJNAGAR DEVELOPMENT BLOCK RAJNAGAR,BIRBHUM Success Story for NIRD impact study (MORINGA CULTIVATION) Livelihood Development through MGNREGA with Convergence & Inauguration of Brand-KHOAI Livelihood Development through MGNREGA with Convergence with Horticulture & SRLM in Rajnagar Dev. Block,Birbhum and the Brand Khoai Livelihood development is the main motto of MGNREGA with sustainable development of the people with asset creation. The government is trying to motivate the people to develop their livelihood by the help of the MGNREGA in bordering area of West Bengal at Birbhum District s Rajnagar Block. Being included in the arena of Intensive Participatory Planning Exercise (IPPE) this block initiated many a programme under MGNREGA for the sustainable all-round development of the job seekers of this pilot project. We are very glad to cite the brief story relating to the village Haripur situated at the Jharkhand and Bengal border area. It is 20 km away from the District town Suri. The people of this village lived their lives from the meager income through farm labouring and livestock cultivation. Mainly tribal people who live in that area, used to migrate to another district & State as brick field labour or farm labour. The same motivation was also applied to the Mahishagram Village of Bhabanipur Gram Panchayat. The situation of Mahishagram is almost same like Haripur. The District Magistrate, P Mohangandhi, IAS given proposal to many blocks for the Moringa or drum stick cultivation in local area. The BDO of Rajnagar block accepted the proposal and taken the

initiative to develop the Moringa orchard in the Haripur area of Chandrapur Gram Panchayat and Mahishagram of Bhabanipur Gram Panchayat.. After that the District Administration arranged a training programme in Rathindra Krishi Research Centre, Sriniketan under Visva bharati University for the Villagers. Returning from the training the villagers initiated the Project such as Raising Nursery, Cutting the pits and trench with MGNREGA. Where there are many instance of corruption and not maintaining the transparency in this flagship scheme, Birbhum district is showing the path to make aware and confident towards the MGNREGA. Many inter departmental convergence instance is there. Now, the District Collector P Mohangandhi, IAS inaugurated the project. He said that the Haripur project is the Pilot basis, and the Moringa or Drum Stick will supplied to the Mid Day Meal Programme in local villages and after it will be made publicly in all over the District. Local BDO Dinesh Mishra said that the it is time to take the work seriously as the local people may lead towards a sustainable development. One of the beneficiaries Pratima Kora told that MGNREGA helped them in many ways and this initiative will lead towards better development.. Production of cereals, pulses, oilseeds, vegetables, herbs, fruits and other food crops thorough cultivation in intensive home / community gardens with women as the main actors. The Brand of Khoai was inaugurated. All out comes from such types of schemes will be in branding of Khoai. Rajnagar Block is the area of extension portion of Chotonagpur Plateau. It is situated under Bibhum. The block head quarter is approximately 30 kms away from the

district sadar town i.e. Suri. Many portion of this block is sharing border with the neighbouring state Jharkhand. The weather of Rajnagar is extreme both in winter and summer season. Average rainfall is 1200 mm in a year. Type of soil is hard (content of morum is high). As the Block is located at the extended portion of chotonagpur plateau, the profile of land is to some extend undulating and sloppy. Flow of water always flows the gradient.so due emphasis was given on those schemes under MGNREGS, where there is ample scope for ground water recharging, minor irrigation, plantation, social forestry and preservation of water throughout the year in addition to schemes like rural connectivity, land development etc. So initiative of local government is only hope and way for this people for their sustainable development. At this time people are communicating with the government and government is approaching to the ground level. A positive impact is there. These schemes were made with Brikha Patta concept. Success Story Sl No 2 (Horticulture plantation at Tarasole under Bhabanipur Gram Panchayat of Rajnagar Development Block) Physical labour, community life and coexistence with the nature are the aspects of village life that appealed to Gandhiji greatly. This type of motivation from District MGNREGA Cell as well as from Block MGNREGA Cell worked in the bordering tribal village Tarasole of Bhabainpur Gram Panchayat under Rajnagar Development Block. In this present context some of the barren laterite land of extension portion of Chotonagpur plateau became green with plantation of Moringa, Mango, Guava, Bail, Black berry(jam) orchard and intercropping of seasonal crops. 4(Four) numbers of women tribal SHGs are being involved in this project with Briksha Patta concept. A total of 2000-Mango, 2000-Moringa, 500- Guava, 100-Bail, 50-Black Berry(Jam) trees are planted in that area. The Gram Panchayat also working in the concept of Intensive Participatory Planning Exercise-II(IPPE-II). This village is under planning of develop a self sufficient village under MGNREGA and its convergence with other social development schemes. Intercropping of seasonal crops also made in the orchard. For protecting the tress from the cattle a trench is being excavated around the orchard area. Also a life fencing made of Bamboo and Kalmi. In the inner portion Pigeon Pea planted as an extra fence which also can be used as pulse. The dried Pigeon Pea tree can be used as fuel for domestic purposes. In past years the villagers used to migrate to other places as farm labouers or brick field labourers. But in these days the villagers are working in the

MGNREGA as wage seekers and earning wages for livelihood development and also creating assets for their sustainable development. Under Khoai initiative the District and Block already making moringa dust from the moringa leaves extracted from the Haripur and Mahishagram of this block for the purpose of supply to the school food supplement of Mid Day Meal program for eradication of malnutrition. So the leaves of moringa will be supplied for that purpose and SHGS will generate some sort of income. Training has been given to the SHGs for that purpose from block level. Mango, Guava, Black Berry(Jam) will also provide some income and food supplement to the villagers. Bail is very important medicinal food item at this area. The digestion problem would cure by taking the bail. So it will generate income. Total estimated project cost is Rs /-(Wage portion Rs /- and Material component Rs /-). Already 4180 persondays generated in this project. So initiative of local government is only hope and way for this purpose for their sustainable development. MGNREGA making positive impact within these peoples. Success Story Sl No 3 Medicinal Plantation (Herbs) Name of the Beneficiary: -JaduRai Memorial & Public Institution Village: - Kalipur Post Office: - Barabagan Gram Panchayat: - Karidhya Block: - Suri-I Dev. Block Name of Scheme:-Medicinal Plantation of Jadu Rai Memorial & Public Institution at Kalipur under Karidhya Gram Panchayat in Suri-I Development Block. Annual Action Plan Number: /DP (15-16)/04 Estimated Cost:-Rs Unskilled wages:-163 persons Financial Year:

This Scheme contains different types of medicinal plants/herbs, such as Tulsi Basaka, SetroNella, Gab Varenda etc. The Pradhan of Karidhya Gram Panchayat and Headmaster of Jadu Rai Memorial & Public Institution (The Campus of the school, where the scheme has been taken place) were very much interested. Their Heartiest participation and the interest of BDO, Suri-I Development Block and NREGA staff of the said block also very much excited about the fulfillment and success of the scheme. It is very much appreciated and welcomed by all the Spectators and Inhabitants of the nearby localities also. A herbal garden containing 68 types of rare indigenous medicinal plants has been natured in the premises of Karidhya JaduRai Memorial & Public Institution through MGNREGA Programme conducted by Karidhya Gram Panchayet under Suri-I Dev Block, District Birbhum. Generally School Students read about various Medicinal plants from their Text Books of Science, but they are unable to identify those plants properly. Moreover, Due to wrong identification of plants, they cannot recognize their true values. Thered &Laterite Soil of this area is unproductive, nutrient-deficient and infertile. For this reason, the cultivation of such herbal plants in this area adds to the practical knowledge of the students. Not only the students but local people too are immensely benefited by this herbal Garden. Cultivation of such plants can generate additional income of the small & marginal farmers. For the reason stated above the said Garden in miniature form has been set up in this Institution. Their merits are values are numberless. Following are some of their values; Amlaki fruits are source of iron & folic acid and they are highly antioxidant. Consumption of those fruits enhance learning capacity of the students. Aloe Vera helps in healing wounds, burns and removes constipation and it is widely used as sun screen lotion. OlatKambal is another valuable plant, the roots of which are used by the local tribal women for their gynecological problems. Basak & Tulsi are popular for their medicinal values. Local peoples use them on a large scale. Gurmer is chiefly used by the diabetic patients In short, the said herbals Garden is helping in promoting awareness about the medicinal values of the Herbal plants. The students and the local people can now identify those plants at first sight.

For certain superstitious benefits, the roots of some important medicinal plants like swetberela etc are being destroyed. Lack of awareness is giving rise to such incidents. After the opening of the Garden, the students are in increasingly recognizing their curative power and therapeutic effect. Ours is a step in the direction of removing superstition from their mind. The utility of the herbal garden is thus manifold. This project in miniature from thus helps in identification, conservation and dissemination of knowledge among school children as well as Guardians. The initiative and its fruitful results remind us of the Vedic age.
