5 From the Owner Some years ago, I phoned the head office of Canadian Tire with this proposition: I will promise not to sell tires, if you make a promise to me not to sell plants and garden goods. They didn t call back, at least not so far. To me, it seemed like a fair deal. Even in the absence of a courtesy call back from the kind folks at Canadian Tire, we here at DeGroot s have decided to hold up our part of the bargain. We don t sell tires. Probably never will. But retailing has changed. And we are changing with the times. We will never waver from our core business of providing top notch gardening goods and services to you, our valued customer. We will always be Lambton County s premier destination for all things nursery and landscape. But that s not to say we won t dabble into a few side shoots. If you walk into our gift store, you will notice our Lugs, a line of amazingly functional and beautiful handbags and totes. You will see a neat selection of Melisa and Doug toys, real high quality at real good prices. You won t miss our display of Darlee patio furniture, of much higher quality than the box stores. We carry a careful selection of Crocs footwear, Upper Canada Soaps, Mirage Candles and Woodstock wind chimes. Even fashion has made its way into DeGroot s, along with a selection of unique jewelry and accessories. And our display of outdoor art and home décor is beautiful, always changing to stay up to date. Do check us out, we promise to impress you. 6 HEAT COMBINATIONS Spring is always a wonderful and fresh time of the year. Fabulous flower baskets arrive in the Garden Centre, and we ooh and aaah about which ones we like the best. We consider the options for our home and garden location, and vow to be better than last year about watering and fertilizing this season. Alas, the heat of summer arrives; we take a long weekend away, and come home to find our planters look a little worse for wear. Why not try a planter made using these heat resistant ingredients? 7 Study their growing habits. Which vegetables grow best vertically, in single rows, or in blocks? Study seed envelopes and seedling packet labels. By planting a vertical crop like pole beans, interspersed with a creeping vine like pumpkins, you can maximize space. Select the best spot. The best garden bed sites are level, well-draining, and close to a water source. Choose a spot that receives at least eight hours of direct sun daily. Create an outline of your bed with string, garden hose, or even flour. Measure the area. Prepare the site by removing sod. Use a tiller, spade, or pitchfork to turn and loosen the soil at least 12 inches deep. Prepare the soil by adding well-rotted manure and/or compost. Plant your garden, and don t forget to use the principals of Crop Rotation and Companion Planting. Vegetable 101 Gardening by Lynn Baarschers As you plant your garden and then throughout the season, make notes on your layout to remind yourself what worked well and what changes you want to try next year. I also marked harvest dates on my garden map, which allowed me to remember all those important details the next winter. A garden layout is fluid. It can change not only season to season but also within a growing season itself. As you plan your first layout, make informed decisions and then give yourself some grace as you put your plan into effect. Your vegetables will, too! Everyone seems interested in growing their own food these days. I was also intrigued by the prospect, and so a few years ago we built two raised beds in the fall, and over the winter I faithfully studied my collection of gardening books. What a fine way to spend some cold winter days! The results of my homework were gratifying. Each day that spring and summer I could admire the results, and more importantly, I could enjoy the flavours of those beautiful veggies. I hope the following tips will inspire you to become a vegetable gardener too. Before you choose what crops to grow, consider their season. Which grow well in cool weather? Which must wait to be planted until the weather gets hot? With careful planning, you can plant and harvest two or even three crops in the same part of the garden during one season in two or three successive waves, maximizing productivity. SPRING

9 LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE Extend your summer evenings by incorporating lanterns into your landscape. Let the soft glow of candle light, fl ameless or solar powered lanterns illuminate your conversation or light your way down the garden path. Your local garden centre has a multitude of lanterns to choose from in all shapes and sizes. They make a wonderful gift for any gardener. ART IN THE GARDEN The clean distinctive lines of modern stainless steel or rustic and timeworn metals will create the element of surprise. By adding a classic or contemporary sculpture, you can turn any corner of your backyard into an expression of your own personal style. Always include a fun feature and conversation piece in your garden. LET S REFLECT Gazing balls have their beginnings as far back as thirteenth century Venice and are widely associated with the Victorian era and English gardens in particular. Although they fell from popularity in the 1950s there has been a refreshing resurgence and a multitude of modern choices of this age old standard. Mounted on a concrete pedestal, a metal stand, or simply placed in your garden amongst your ground coverage, gazing balls are a simple way to add a touch of colour and interest to an otherwise unadorned setting. ROMANCING THE STONE Let a timeless piece of garden statuary add elegance and sophistication to your landscape. From a whimsical fairy to a stately statuette of St. Francis you can put your personal fi ngerprint on that special place and give heart to your garden. Spring is here and your garden centre is calling. We ve got what you need to take your garden from ordinary to EXTRAordinary.
