Women were first allowed admission in the 1970s. Active members pay dues to the society and are responsible for attending weekly meetings, aiding the poor, and contributing to the weekly secret collection. The society is organized into conferences at the parish level. The first conference of the society in the United States began in 1845 in St. Louis. Chicago followed in 1857 with the St. Patrick Parish conference. The next seven years saw the Society established in eight conferences in Chicago. To provide for this expansion, the Provisional Particular Council of Chicago was formed in 1860 with representatives from each conference. The early mission of the society was to maintain its members by mutual example and advice in the practice of a Christian life, to visit the poor at their homes, to bring them succor in kind, to afford them religious consolations, remembering these words of our Master: Not in bread alone doth man live, but in every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God, to assist in the elementary and Christian instruction of poor children, to distribute moral and religious books, to do all kinds of charitable works for which resources may be adequate but which will not interfere with the chief object of the society. From its foundation, the members of the Society in Chicago charged themselves with teaching Sunday school, Catechism, and building trade schools. They also offered fire relief, especially after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, built orphanages and asylums, homeless shelters, and aided in finding employment. The Society of Chicago provided care to U.S. Civil War prisoners and widows, as well as families and servicemen affected by World Wars I and II. During the Great Depression the Society secured the right to act as a disbursing agency for federal and state relief funds. Archbishop Quigley ( ) first began to utilize the Society as a recognized charitable arm of the Diocese. He opened a central office for the Society in 1911, using this office for placing children in institutions or with families through juvenile court or through private arrangements. The Society established many social institutions such as St. Vincent s Infant Hospital and the Mission of Our Lady of Mercy. It also developed special works in public institutions such as Hines and U.S. Marines hospitals, the Cook County Jail and House of Correction. By 1918 the Society in Chicago numbered some 126 conferences with 1,710 active members. To provide for further growth, in 1955 Cardinal Stritch requested the Society in Chicago be divided into four Particular Councils: North, Mid-City, South, and West Suburban, with a Central Council composed of members representing the Particular Councils. This division remained until 1965 when Cardinal Cody requested that the Society assume the division of seven Particular Councils, following the design of the seven vicariates of the Archdiocese of Chicago. In the 1970s, the Society was again expanded to meet the twelve vicariate system of the archdiocese, with over 150 parish conferences. 2 Page 2 Scope & Content In 1986, the Archdiocese of Chicago Archives and Records Center accessioned material formerly belonging to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, dating from The material had been damaged while being stored in a basement that flooded. The Archives and Records Center freeze-dried the material to stop the growth of mold, brushed off the dead mold, refolded and reboxed the collection. This material has been processed into 135 archival boxes. The collection is composed of conference reports, submitted to the particular and central councils both on an annual and quarterly basis. It also contains conference membership lists, meeting minutes, and financial records (including receipts and audits) from parish conferences, particular councils, and the Central Council of Chicago. Additionally, the collection includes extensive correspondence, primarily that of its secretary and president James F. Kennedy. Finally, there is an assortment of magazines, pamphlets, newspaper articles or other publications about the Society or Catholic Charities. The collection is divided into series thematically and then further arranged chronologically. Boxes do not mix type of content, but will sometimes contain multiple successive years. There are certain sections of correspondence that have been separated from the chronology of the general collection because they pertain to very specific events or organizations within the Society, such as the Citizens Committee to Welcome Cardinal Mundelein correspondence from , the Misericordia Hospital correspondence from , and the Archdiocesan Central Charity Bureau correspondence from Specific items of interest include material concerning the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago (including correspondence and a booklet of the proposed plan of the event, Box 126) and a 1908 signed letter from President Theodore Roosevelt thanking the society for its contributions to charitable work (Box 94). There is also material from a New York State Civil War-era brigade ( , Box 135), including a muster roll, although this material s relevance and connection to the society remains unclear. Series Description I. Annual Reports Boxes 1-35 Yearly reports from each parish within the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Chicago. Lists president, secretary, treasurers, and membership reports. Also notes receipts, expenditures and charity works of each parish. Each box may have multiple years. This is not a complete run. II. Quarterly Reports Boxes Similar to annual reports, quarterly reports list the officers, members, expenditures and receipts, but also included are the number of baptisms, deaths, and families. Each box may have multiple years. This is not a complete run. III. Membership Lists Boxes Included are the names, addresses, occupations and donations of members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society for separate parishes. Each box may have multiple years. This is not a complete run. IV. Minutes Boxes Consists of order of exercises, minutes and records of events for parishes with St. Vincent de Paul societies, as well as meetings of the Particular and Central Councils. Each box may have multiple years. This is not a complete run. V. Correspondence Boxes The correspondence is vast and consists of sent and received letters, both formal through the Society and personal through council members. Much of the correspondence pertains to, or is from, secretary and later president of the Society, James F. Kennedy. VI. Financial Records -- Boxes Financial summaries, Misericordia Hospital receipts, Central Charity Bureau receipts, Catholic Charities financial audits. VII. Pamphlets -- c Boxes Consists of pamphlets distributed by the Society, parishes, and other organizations. Also includes programs of special events and commemorations. VIII. Miscellaneous -- Boxes Collection of speeches and addresses, publications of James F. Kennedy, history of the St. Vincent de Paul society and the society in Chicago, as well as a information regarding the U.S. Civil War.
