Before installing this system, read and follow these instructions and the TABS mobility monitor instructions. Failure to do so could result in injury or death to a person in your care. If you need another copy of TABS mobility monitor instructions, call TABS Customer Service. Keep these instructions in a safe place for future reference. Visual monitoring by caregivers is required. The TABS mobility monitoring system is not a substitute for proper nursing care. The system relies on immediate response by the caregiver. TABS mobility monitors may not be suitable for all high risk persons; restraints may be required. A periodic "chirp" indicates a low battery. Replace the battery in the TABS monitor immediately. Use only 9V alkaline batteries. Test your TABS pressure pads and TABS monitor before each use. If the pad is no longer working, discard it immediately. Do not immerse pressure pads in liquids. The pads will not function properly if exposed to excessive liquids. If the pad is immersed in liquid, discard it immediately. Keep the pressure pad flat at all times. Folding the pad may damage it. Do not use the pad if it has been folded. Place the pad on the chair or bed with the label side up. The pad will not operate properly if the pad is placed with the label side down. The TABS monitoring system can be defeated by a cognitively aware person, a person with a few moments of lucidity, or an uncooperative person. Properly assess each individual. Test the TABS monitoring system with each new resident/patient and before each use. Patient weight may affect proper operation. The bed and chair pressure pads are not recommended for persons weighing less than 60 pounds (27 kg). TABS Sidekicks pressure pads are designed to be used with TABS monitors only. Do not substitute any other fall monitoring devices. Do not use the T-connector with the TABS Professional mobility monitor. Bed model (26000) U.S. Patent 5,796,059 Chair model (26100) Patent pending 2

How the TABS pressure pads work The TABS monitoring system is designed to alert caregivers when someone is leaving a bed, chair, room or wheelchair. TABS pressure pads can be used alone or in conjunction with the TABS cord and clip assembly. The TABS Sidekick pressure pad is placed on a bed, chair or wheelchair according to the instructions. The pressure pad cord is connected to TABS monitor. Alarm options are set on the TABS monitor according to the TABS Instructions and User Manual. The disk is inserted into the TABS disk slot. When TABS pressure pads are used, they are "non-latching". The alarm is reset when the resident/patient returns to the bed or chair pad. If the resident/patient does not return to the pad, remove and replace the disk in the TABS monitor to reset the alarm. If you are using both the pad and cord and clip assembly, the alarms sounds when the disk is pulled from the disk slot or when pressure is removed from the pad whichever comes first. Reinserting the disk in the disk slot quickly and easily resets the alarm. 3

Replace any components with signs of wear or damage immediately. Test the TABS monitoring system before each use and inspect the pressure pads and monitor regularly to make sure they are not damaged. Test the system by pressing firmly on the pressure pad for 3 seconds. When you remove the pressure, the alarm will sound. Reset the alarm. Testing the TABS Elite Monitor Test your TABS Elite monitor and TABS Sidekicks pressure pad before each use and inspect the cords and pressure pads for signs of damage. The weight and construction of some mattresses may cause improper operation of your TABS monitoring system when using an under the mattress pad. Test before each use. Place the patient in bed. The "IN" monitoring light will come on. The "STANDBY" light will shut off after approximately 3 seconds. Remove the patient from bed. An alarm will sound after the time delay set on the rear panel of the TABS Elite monitor. Deactivate the alarm by pressing "STANDBY" on the front panel of the TABS Elite monitor. If the TABS Elite monitor and pressure pad do not operate as described above, check pad placement and check the sensitivity level of the TABS Elite monitor. Always test before each use. 8

Modular T-connector instructions Use only the modular T-connector provided by the manufacturer of TABS mobility monitors. If other modular T-connectors are used the device may not operate properly which could result in injury or death to a person in your care. Test your TABS monitoring system before each use. Failure to do so could result in injury or death to a person in your care. Do not use the T-connector with the TABS Professional mobility monitor. The modular T-connector lets you connect the TABS pressure pad to the TABS Select and Voice+ monitors and your nurse call system. Follow these instructions: 1. Remove any cords that may be attached to the bottom of the TABS Select or Voice+ monitor. 2. Plug the modular T-connector into the bottom of the TABS Select or Voice+ monitor. 3. Plug the nurse call cable and the TABS pressure pads cable into either of the two connections on the modular T-connector. 4. Refer to Testing the TABS Mobility Monitor. The alarm should appear on your nurse call system console. If it does not, check your connections and test again. If it still does not work, call TABS Customer Service. 9

Cleaning the pressure pad Clean soiled areas of cord and pressure pad with a clean cloth and water or a vinyl-tolerant solution. Do not immerse pressure pad in liquid of any type. Check your pad life span Check the date written on the top of the pressure pad. Make sure the pad is not used beyond this date. Approximately ten days before the date expires contact your TABS Representative to place an order for more pads. Test the pad before each use. See Testing the TABS Mobility Monitor. 10

Troubleshooting Problem The alarm does not sound when the resident/patient leaves the bed or chair. Solutions Check the TABS monitor. Are you using a 9V alkaline battery and has it been installed properly? If not, remove the battery and install a 9V alkaline battery following the instructions in your TABS User Manual. If using a TABS Elite monitor check to make sure the power supply is plugged into an electrical outlet not controlled by a light switch and that the outlet has power. Check the cord. Is it connected to the TABS Mobility monitor or TABS Elite monitor and is the connection secure? If not, connect the cord properly. Is the resident under 60 pounds (27 kg) and are you using only the pressure pad? If so, you may have to monitor the resident with the TABS cord disk assembly only. Is the resident sitting properly on the pressure pad? If not, reposition the pressure pad so that it is centered under the resident s body. Is the mattress too heavy making it difficult for the pressure pad to sense a difference in pressure? If so, try using an above the mattress pad. Problem The alarm sounds periodically. Solutions Check to see if the disk has been removed from the TABS monitor. If so, replace it. Check the battery. The sound you hear may be the low battery alert. Replace the battery with a 9V alkaline battery following the instructions in the TABS Mobility monitor Installation Instructions or User Manual. 11
