9 EN :2004 (E) Foreword This document (EN :2004) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 162 "Protective clothing including hand and arm protection and lifejackets", the secretariat of which is held by DIN. This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by October 2004, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by October This document has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association, and supports essential requirements of EU Directive(s). For relationship with EU Directive(s), see informative annex ZA, which is an integral part of this document. Annex A is normative and contains the donning and doffing and shape retention test. Annex B is normative and sets out the practical performance test. 10 13911 :2004 (E) Introduction This standard specifies the minimum safety requirements and test methods for a firehood worn by a firefighter following a user risk assessment. When worn with protective clothing, breathing apparatus and helmet the design features and performance requirements of the hood are intended to provide protection to the exposed areas of the head and neck against heat and flame. 4

11 EN :2004 (E) 1 Scope This standard specifies minimum safety requirements and test methods for a firehood to be worn during firefighting operations and associated activities. This standard only applies in situations when protective clothing (EN 469), breathing apparatus (EN 136 and EN 137), and helmet (EN 443) are also worn. 2 Normative references This European Standard incorporates, by dated or undated reference, provisions from other publications. 12 EN 13911: Terms and definitions For the purposes of this European Standard, the following terms and definitions apply. 3.1 firehood garment worn in contact with the head and covering the head of the breathing apparatus face piece and interfacing with the facemask to protect all areas of the head and neck not covered by protective clothing, breathing apparatus and helmet 3.2 garment single item of clothing which may consist of single or multiple layers of material which has flexibility and elasticity 3.3 component assembly combination of all materials of a multi layer garment presented exactly as the finished garment construction 3.4 interface area area where items of PPE meet and/or overlap 3.5 seam any method of permanent fastening between two or more pieces of material in a garment 3.6 yoke area of the firehood interfacing with the protective clothing covering the upper torso 3.7 facial opening opening in front of the firehood interfacing with the breathing apparatus facemask 3.8 elasticity property of a material by which it tends to recover its original size and shape immediately after the removal of the force causing deformation 4 uesicln and Materials 4.1 Introduction Materials used in the construction of the firehood which are likely to come into contact with the skin of the wearer shall comply with 4.2 of EN 340:2003. The design requirements specified shall be verified by visual inspection during the procedures in annex A and annex B, unless otherwise specified in 4.2. The manufacturer shall provide information to users on how compatibility with other items of PPE is achieved. 6

13 EN :2004 (E) General The firehood shall be close fitting and able to be worn without discomfort or significant restriction to head movement. The firehood shall fit around the breathing apparatus facemask for which compatibility is claimed without reducing the field of view or interfering with the breathing function of tile mask. Test according to annex B. Labels and closure systems or accessories shall be selected so as to react to heat and flame comparably to the other materials forming tile firehood when tested according to the principles of EN ISO method A and NOTE 1 Overstretching will reduce the heat protective performance of the hood and should be avoided by design. NOTE 2 Excess material in the construction of the firehood may hamper the wearer and compromise the wearing of other personal protective equipment. 4.3 Facial opening The firehood shall have a faciai opening designed to fit around a breathing apparatus facemask for which compatibility is claimed. Assess by visual observation. 4.4 Yoke interface area The firehood shall have a yoke creating an interface with the protective clothing. Assess by visual inspection. 4.5 Sizing The firehood shall be manufactured in various sizes or be sufficiently elastic to be compatible with various head sizes and shapes. Assess by visual inspection. 4.6 Labels The label(s) shall be positioned in the area defined as the yoke of the firehood. Assess by visual inspection. 5 Sampling and pre-treatment 5.1 The number and size of specimens for the different tests shall be in accordance with the respective standard. 5.2 The material or component assembly shall be pre-treated by washing and drying 5 times in accordance with procedures 3A (at 60 ± 3)OC and E of EN ISO Performance requirements 6.1 Performance requirements - Material or component assembly General The following requirements shall be satisfied after sampling specified in 5.1 and pre-treatment specified in Flame spread The material, component assembly, closure system or accessory shall be tested for flame spread in accordance with EN ISO method A and a limited flame spread index 3 of EN 533 shall be achieved and no specimen shall give hole formation in any layer. 7

14 13911 :2004 No specimen containing a seam shall permit the seam to open Heat transfer (flame) The material or component assembly shall give a Heat Transfer Index HTI24 ~ 8 s and a (HTb4 - HT1 12) ~ 3 s, when tested in accordance with EN 367. The value quoted is the lowest single result rounded to 0,1 s Heat transfer (radiation) The material or component assembly shall give a t24 ~ 11, and a (t24 - t12)~ 3, when tested in accordance with EN ISO 6942 method B at a heat flux density of 20 kw/m2,. The value quoted is the lowest single result rounded to 0,1s Residual strength of material when exposed to radiant heat Two specimens taken from the material or component assembly shall have a burst strength ~ 300 kpa, after pretreatment of the material by EN ISO 6942 method A at a heat flux density of 10 kw/m2, when tested in accordance with EN ISO using a test area of 7,3 cm 2 and a testing time to burst of (30 ± 10) s Heat resistance Each material, component assembly, closure system and accessory shall not melt, drip, ignite, or break and shall not shrink more than 10 % at a temperature of (260 1(:)) C when tested to ISO with the following deviation: after removal from the test oven the test specimens shall not be stretched before measuring dimensional change Seam breaking strength One specimen of each seam type used in the construction of the firehood shall have a burst strength of ~ 450 kpa when tested in accordance with EN ISO using a test area of 7,3 cm 2 and a testing time to burst of (30 ± 10) s Dimensional change The material or component assembly shall have a dimensional change s 5% when tested in accordance with EN 25077, using the pre-treatment specified in Performance requirements.. Complete Firehood General When tested in accordance with annex A, the firehood shall meet the requirements of to 6.2.4, using a breathing apparatus face mask complying with EN 136 Type 3 with which the hood is stated to be compatible by the manufacturer. Annex A - Donning, doffing and shape retention test - specifies the normative procedure for compliance with some design requirements. This procedure utilises a human headform as specified in annex A. When tested in accordance with annex B, the requirements of and shall be met. Annex B - Practical performance test - specifies the normative procedure utilising test subjects to don and doff the firehood and to wear related items of PPE so as to evaluate any deterioration of the firehood and compatibility with these other items. 8

15 EN :2004 (E) The firehood shall retain its shape and fit when compared to a firehood fitted to the headform once only for the first time The interface area between the hood and the breathing apparatus facemask shall be maintained There shall be no breaks in the construction e.g. at seams or eiasticated closure systems etc. 7 Marking Marking requirements shall be as specified in EN 340. Figure 1 Pictogram 8 Information supplied by the manufacturer The information supplied by the manufacturer shall be as specified in EN 340 and shall also include how compatibility with other items of PPE is intended to be achieved, e.g. positioning of yoke in relation to clothing; adjustment of facial opening if appropriate. The information shall identify compatible designs of breathing apparatus face mask, and other relevant items of PPE. 9

16 EN :2004 (E) Annex A (normative) Donning, doffing and test A.1 Examine the overall shape and construction of the firehood. A.2 A medium size headform 1 complying with EN 168 which has an internal core covered by a nominal 12 mm thick layer of polyurethane of hardness (50 ± 5) IRHD shall be used. Position the hood so that it is around the neck area of the headform with the neck and head area of the headform protruding through the facial opening of the hood. A.3 Mount the breathing apparatus facemask on the headform according to the breathing apparatus manufacturer's instructions. A.4 Don the hood into the user position on the headform and examine whether there is integrity of the interface area between the hood and the breathing apparatus facemask, e.g. no gaps in the intended area of protection. A.S Position the hood on the headform so that the hood is around the neck area of the headform with the neck and head area of the headform protruding through the facial opening of the hood, and then don and doff for 50 cycles, passing the facial opening of the hood up and over the headform to the in-use position and then passing the hood down over the headform to the starting position. For firehoods with a manually adjusted facial opening the adjustment is to be made during each cycle, after donning and before doffing. A.6 Following the 50 cycles, remove the facemask and the hood from the headform, and allow the hood to relax for 1 min. A.7 Examine the hood including shape, seams and any elasticised/manually adjusted closure systems for distortion, stretching, damage or similar changes, in comparison with the observations made in A.1. 17 EN :2004 (E) Annex (normative) Practical Performance Test B.1 The practical performance test shall be conducted in accordance with EN using two samples as received, sized appropriately for two test subjects. B.2 Firehoods shall be tested in conjunction with the following correctly sized items for which compatibility is claimed by the firehood manufacturer: Protective clothing complying with EN 469 Breathing apparatus complying with EN 136 and EN 137 Firefighters' helmet complying with EN 443 Firefighters' gloves complying with EN 659 The test report shall state the specific details of the items used during the test. B.3 The following activities from Table 1 of EN :2001 shall be conducted at the ambient condition described in that standard. The order of the testing shall be at the discretion of the testing officer.
