THE PROBLEM In April 2016, bulk shipments of lithium-ion (LI) batteries in cargo holds were banned on international passenger flights because of their volatility. The impact was global. We know safety while flying is vital for both pilots and passengers. And we also know that shipping cargo and people separately, is expensive. Even more so when dangerous goods are involved. LI batteries can erupt when an internal short circuit occurs from damage, defect, exposure to high temperatures, or by overcharging. Heat radiating from one affected cell can create a domino effect referred to as thermal runaway. Minutes, even hours after a fire appears to be extinguished, a LI battery can reignite. THE SOLUTION In response to the ban, CellBlock Fire Containment Systems (CellBlock FCS) was born using postconsumer recycled glass (CellBlockEX) bound with cementitious materials, to manufacture precast fire containment panels. A 2.54cm (1 ) panel can tolerate direct heat in excess of 1100 C (2012 F) up to 6 hours with negligible heat transfer to the outside surface, surpassing ASTM E136 standards for non-combustibility and exceeding DOT requirements. In other words, if a LI battery fire occurred on board an aircraft, a plane would have enough time to make an emergency landing. Since March 20, 1991 more than 160 air/airport incidents involving lithium batteries carried as cargo or baggage have been recorded. SAFE. SIMPLE. EFFECTIVE. Numerous fire hazards exist in production, transportation, storage and operation. Companies need peace of mind knowing their people, products and profits are protected. And they want three things: safety, reliability and affordability. What began as a solution to the airline industry, has grown into a comprehensive line of fire containment products suitable for any business including panels, transportation and storage cases, bags, pads, drums and loose-fill. CellBlock FCS helps you safely handle, transport and store LI batteries and other dangerous goods from flammable liquids to flammable solids - with confidence. Located in Standish, Maine, CellBlock FCS provides you with peace of mind knowing you re using the safest, greenest, simplest and most effective products on the market cellblockfcs.com 4

TM / / A SAFE, SIMPLE SOLUTION FOR FIRE PREVENTION OR CONTAINMENT CellblockEX is a multi-functional environmentally friendly, non-combustible, mineral-based fire extinguishing agent comprised of recycled glass used for fire containment and prevention. Through a proprietary process, the post-consumer recycled glass is finely ground, mixed and formed into granules, then sintered and foamed in a rotary kiln to create lightweight spheres with a closed cellular pore structure. CellBlockEX s smooth spherical shape safely covers and encloses products and packaging and won t degrade when exposed to vibration or friction in the shipping process. Tested by the Material Testing Institute (MPA), in Dresden, Germany, the loose-fill can be used as a fire suppressant in industrial and residential construction to fill cavities from suspended ceilings, to cable shafts, lines and pipes. Used as a packaging filler, it can protect products from damage, vibrations and impacts. CellBlockEX is available in 50L bags. FEATURES BENEFITS Green, non-combustible and sustainable made from post-consumer recycled glass Green - 100% mineral-based, environmentally safe, reusable and harmless to health (does not contain Crystalline Silica) Tested by the Material Testing institute (MPA) Dresden Effectively binds liquids, gases and vapors absorbs approx. 200% of its own weight Displaces oxygen, absorbs energy and suffocates the fire Forms an impervious cocoon around the fire load Versatile - can be used as a fire suppressant, an absorption agent and a filler Insect, bacteria and mold resistant Multi-functional - suitable for class A, B, D and K fire loads including metal fires, lithium-ion battery fires and combustible liquids Low dust content and easily removable without the mess of water, halon, vermiculite, pumice or sand Unaffected by heat, moisture, and chemicals Lithium Ion Battery Incident Kit / / cellblockfcs.com 6

CELLBLOCKEX - FOR ALL OF YOUR FIRE CONTAINMENT NEEDS ALL-ROUND EXTINGUISHING AGENT CellBlockEX is suitable for use in industrial facilities, production operations, data processing centers, archives, warehouses, and for transportation. As an electrical insulator, the granulate is also idea for the energy sector (i.e. transformer station protection). It has a low dust content, tolerates frost and is easily removable. DANGEROUS GOODS PACKAGING The dangerous goods industry has to observe multiple regulations whether transporting over the road, in the air or by sea. CellBlockEX meets the fundamental requirements as a fire protection filler and exceeds DOT requirements for lithium-ion battery transport. LITHIUM-ION BATTERY FIRE PROTECTION There are increasing requirements for better fire protection during production, transportation, storage, disposal and recycling of lithium-ion batteries. CellBlockEX is ideal as a dry extinguishing agent and is especially well-suited for processes where the use of extinguishing water or foam is not possible. FIRE PREVENTION WITH CELLBLOCKEX Preventive fire protection encompasses steps taken in advance to counteract the outbreak and spread of fires. In technical fire protection, CellBlockEX can be used as a fire suppressing material by permanently filling cavities, suspended ceilings, cable shafts, lines and pipes cellblockfcs.com 7

LITHIUM-ION BATTERY AIR/AIRPORT INCIDENTS SAFE BATTERY TRANSPORTATION AND STORAGE IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF EVERYTHING WE DO Lithium-ion battery incidents are on the rise. We re working hard to deliver effective solutions. Since March 20, 1991 more than 160 air/airport incidents involving lithium batteries carried as cargo or baggage have been recorded. headquarters_offices/ash/ash_programs/hazmat/ aircarrier_info/media/battery_incident_chart.pdf. Laptop with lithium-ion battery in carry-on baggage: Started burning in the overhead bin in the passenger cabin. Fire extinguished on the ramp. Prototype lithium battery shipped by a PHMSA Approval Holder. Fire discovered as ULD was being loaded for trans-atlantic cargo flight in Memphis. Two 12-volt non-spillable batteries packed together in same box. Package caught fire in air cargo sort facility cellblockfcs.com 16

Portable drill in checked baggage: Batterypowered drill accidentally activated in checked baggage. Drill/battery overheated and caused more than 20 suitcases to catch fire on the ramp right before loading on passenger flight. A passenger checked a toolbox as checked baggage. TSA screeners noticed smoke coming from the toolbox. The Port of Portland Fire Dept. (POPFD) was alerted and responded to the incident and closed the screening location. The violator paid a $10,000 Civil Penalty. Lithium-ion Batteries for remote control model cars: Shipment being returned to manufacturer in Korea caught fire in air cargo warehouse. Jet Blue Flight 721 During takeoff from JFK, smoke began pouring from an overhead bin in the passenger cabin. Passengers alerted flight attendants. As the plane returned to JFK for an emergency landing, flight attendants were able to put out the fire, discharging both Halon fire extinguishers. Additionally, water was applied to cloth embers that continued to burn after the Halon was used. One passenger complained of chest pains and needed assistance in exiting the aircraft. Both lithium metal and ion batteries were loosely packed with the equipment cellblockfcs.com 17

CHARACTERISTICS OF COMBUSTIBLE METALS Temperature Temperatures of 1,000 C and up can be expected from most metal fires. Light metals burn at 2,000-3,200 C and the heavy metal zircon burns at over 4,660 C. These high temperatures trigger chemical reactions that do not correspond to our usual experiences. Therefore, special care should be taken when extinguishing, since there is a risk of death. UV Radiation The high temperatures are also responsible for emitting a large proportion of UV radiation. The eyes should also be protected. Inflammability The inflammability of metals is largely dependent on their form of appearance. The larger the surface of the metal relative to its volume, the easier it is for combustion (oxidation) to take place. For example, fine iron powder can be ignited very easily. For some light metals, contact with water is sufficient to cause inflammation. Aluminum powder and magnesium powder can be ignited with the flame of a gas burner. Light metals (Reaction with water already in cold condition) Light metals (No reaction with water in cold condition) Non-noble heavy metals Noble heavy metals Many light metals (density less than 5 kg/dm³) react on contact with water and form hydrogen gas (H2), which produces a highly explosive oxyhydrogen mixture with the oxygen present in the air and ignites by the resulting heat of the reaction. These metals reach very high temperatures (2,000-3,200 C) in the event of a fire and therefore represent a particular danger. These can also be ignited under certain conditions, e.g. iron chips Don t burn Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium, Cesium, Calcium, Strontium, Barium Beryllium, Magnesium, Aluminum, Titanium e.g. iron, lead, zircon Silver, gold, platinum Sodium (Na) Potassium (K) Aluminum (Al) Lithium (Li) Magnesium (Mg) cellblockfcs.com 18

HOW CELLBLOCKEX WORKS Suffocation Effect Covering a fire load with CellBlockEX granulate displaces oxygen and separates it from the fuel, suffocating the fire. Cooling Effect Due to its specific thermal capacity, CellBlockEX absorbs heat, thereby cooling the fire, and disrupting the thermal reaction. Isolation Effect Like glass, CellBlockEX melts at a high temperature. The granulates absorb heat in the form of melting energy, and cools the fire while forming an impervious layer over the fire load, preventing a reaction with oxygen. Even difficult to control metal fires, such as sodium or magnesium, can be extinguished with CellBlockEX. Gas Tightness Due to the CellBlockEX grain shape, very dense sphere packing is achieved. The supply of oxygen is impeded by the packed bed, and the formation of combustible gases is prevented. Sorbency of Liquids The special granulate mixture combined with the porous, large grain surface, effectively binds liquids. Fire Gas Filtering Just like liquids, gases and vapors accumulate on the large surface area of the CellBlockEX granulate and are bound for disposal.
