1 More Zero Counts Weevils. Dead. Fast.

2 Cobalt Insecticide for Alfalfa Weevil, Aphids The way to lower sweep counts of damaging pests is an application of Cobalt insecticide. Cobalt delivers broad-spectrum, consistent control of insects, including weevils (adults and larvae), aphids and armyworms. Cobalt contains two active ingredients chlorpyrifos and gamma-cyhalothrin that deliver two modes of action. Chlorpyrifos is the active ingredient found in Lorsban Advanced insecticide, one of the most widely-used insecticides in western alfalfa. Gamma-cyhalothrin is a latest-generation pyrethroid. The combination creates an insecticide with broader spectrum and faster kill than when either product is used alone. Pests Controlled Egyptian alfalfa weevil and alfalfa weevil (larvae and adults), aphids (blue, pea, cowpea, green peach), armyworms, alfalfa caterpillar, looper, cutworms Weevil Aphid Armyworm Why Fast Knockdown is Important You sweep a field and find a low, but emerging population of weevil. That developing population can quickly surpass the economic threshold and begin causing damage. Any treatment delay by a slow-acting insecticide or by an applicator that can t promptly spray the field will lead to damaged alfalfa and lower returns. With Cobalt, insects stop feeding almost immediately and are dead within hours, even in cooler temperatures. Pest control occurs by contact and ingestion. Additionally, the active ingredient, chlorpyrifos, has a redistribution/fuming ability that helps to control pests that are immobile or located in hard-to-reach areas. Application Recommendations Rates: oz/a recommended for most situations. Spray volume: When foliage is dense and/or pest pressure is high, use 5 gpa (air) and 20 gpa (ground). Method of application: Air, ground, chemigation Tank mixes: Can be tank mixed with other pesticides, nutrients or adjuvants if prior use has shown the combination to be non-injurious to alfalfa. Re-treatment interval: Minimum 10 days between treatments. Re-entry Interval: 24 hours Pre-harvest interval: 7 days at 13 oz/a rate 14 days at rates between oz/a 21 days at rates above 26 oz/a

3 Efficacy Trials Trial background: In 2009, UC Extension San Joaquin County conducted an alfalfa weevil trial to evaluate newer insecticides. Insecticides were applied to an increasing population of alfalfa weevil and aphids on March 12, Four replicates were used in a randomized complete block design. Alfalfa was 4" 8" high. Number of weevils per sweep was recorded at 5, 12 and 19 days after application. Alfalfa Weevil Efficacy Trial 2009 UCCE-San Joaquin County Mick Canevari Lorsban-4E 2 pt Lorsban ADV 2 pt Cobalt 26 oz Steward 6.7 oz 5 DAA 12 DAA 19 DAA Trial results: At the 5-day measurement, the plots with Cobalt, Lorsban and Warrior provided the highest level of control. Numerically, Cobalt was the most effective treatment. Excellent weevil control with Cobalt continued through the 19-day measurement. Warrior 3.8 oz Untreated # larvae/sweep

4 Trial background: In early 2009, UC Extension Imperial County conducted efficacy trials using various insecticides to control alfalfa weevil and aphids. Insecticide treatments included Cobalt (19 oz/a), Lorsban plus Steward (16 oz/a + 9 oz/a) and Furadan (16 oz/a) and were applied on February 19, 2009 using a tractor-mounted boom. Five replicates were used in a randomized complete block design. Alfalfa Weevil Efficacy Trial 2009 UCCE Imperial County Eric Natwick Furadan Cobalt Lorsban ADV + Steward 4 DAA 7 DAA 14 DAA Trial results: All insecticide treatments significantly reduced weevil populations below the untreated check. Sweep counts were also taken at 21 days after application and Cobalt continued to keep weevil populations low. Untreated # larvae/10 sweeps Cobalt Lorsban ADV + Steward Furadan Untreated Cowpea Aphid Efficacy Trial 2009 UCCE Imperial County Eric Natwick # aphids/10 sweeps 3 DAA 7 DAA 14 DAA Trial results: All insecticide treatments significantly reduced aphid populations below the untreated check. Numerically, the Cobalt treatment was the top treatment. Sweep counts were also taken at 21 days and Cobalt continued to keep aphid populations low. Blue alfalfa aphid and pea aphid populations were also measured in this study. Numerically, Cobalt provided the highest level of control for both species. Complete details of this trial can be found online at UC Extension website ( in the Ag Briefs newsletter (Jan 2010). To Learn More Contact your PCA or Dow AgroSciences representative.
