First Rays' List and Secure Order Form Home > Stuff for Sale > Plants and Supplies This list was updated on April 20, This is our 27th release in 2002! (Over the last two years, we have averaged 62 releases per year, and that's why we don't publish a printed catalog!) Concerned that you may not be seeing the most up-to-date version of the list? Click here. Want to know when we add stuff to our list? Click here to add or remove your name. We will attempt to update the list frequently to reflect the current stock. Orders will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, and quantities are LIMITED, so please bear with us if your selection is not available. PAYMENT POLICY: We accept and prefer American Express, VISA, MasterCard, Discover, Novus and Diners Club cards, and will gladly accept checks and money orders. However, we have received a lot of orders for which we've never received payment, and having us hold stuff is unfair to others. Therefore, orders will be cancelled if we do not receive payment or credit card info within one week of acknowledgement. Orders will be shipped upon receipt of payment. We usually ship plants on Mondays or Tuesdays so they arrive before the weekend; supplies may be shipped at any time. In either case, you will be notified via when your stuff is set to ship. SHIPPING POLICY: PLEASE READ We have recently changed our shipping method, and now use Federal Express almost exclusively, as we have found them to be very reliable, and saves most customers a significant amount of money. For some packages, we will occasionally use the USPS Priority Mail, but that's primarily for very small packages that can be left in the mailbox, as we do not regularly go to the post office. Delivery times for FedEx Ground or Home Delivery Service can be seen here. Please note that you can probably save about a dollar per box if you have a package shipped to a business rather than a residence, so you might consider supplying a work shipping address. If ordered with plants, supplies may be shipped separately, especially if bulky or heavy. Please trust that if we override your shipping selection, we will do so to minimize your costs, but in an appropriate fashion. If time is critical, please let us know via a comment below. Here is the total cost breakdown:
1. Shipping is billed at the actual cost. 2. There is a moderate cost for packing supplies (boxes, peanuts, tape and heat packs, if necessary), usually no more than $2 or $4 per package, unless it's large. Plant shipments within the continental U.S. only. No export at this time. Supplies are routinely exported WINTER SHIPPING: In addition to our thorough packing method, which is pretty good insulation by itself, we use 48-hour heat packs to protect plant shipments. For the most part, plants will be shipped via FedEx 2-Business Day delivery, but if you're in a particularly cold part of the country, or if we're experiencing extreme weather, we will use overnight delivery. Likewise, if you're close, we are still safe using ground delivery service. We consult our "Current Weather" page to get an idea of your forecast.. HOW TO ORDER: Please select plants, supplies, and artwork by clicking the associated radio buttons below, specifying quantities, as appropriate in the comments field at the bottom of the form (we will ship one (1) by default). When you are done, scroll down and indicate your payment preference and information, and fill in your name, daytime telephone number, and shipping and addresses. Then click the PLACE ORDER button at the bottom of the page. We typically close out the week's orders at midnight on Saturday for shipment the following Monday, but don't wait, as orders are processed on a first-come, first-served basis! SHIPPING WEIGHTS To assist people in "guesstimating" the shipping cost associated with their orders, we have added approximate shipping weights to each item. Once you have selected the items you wish to order, total the weights, and click here to find out the approximate cost. These weights are, for the most part, overestimated. If you are buying one or two items, add a pound or two to account for packaging materials. If you are buying multiple items, you're probably OK with the item weights only. PAYMENT: Once you have indicated your selections by clicking the buttons on this form, please enter the information in the payment and shipping info areas below, and click the "Order Plants" button at the bottom. This is a SECURE FORM, but if you prefer, you may call or fax our Credit Card line TOLL-FREE at ( in PA), and leave YOUR NAME, as it's on the card, the CARD NUMBER, and EXPIRATION DATE. Your order will be confirmed via e- mail, usually within 24 hours. If you prefer to pay by check/money order, you will receive confirmation of the availability and total cost of your order. Please note that we intentionally overestimate the shipping costs, but will refund any excess over actual costs with your order. With your order confirmation, you will receive instructions about sending us your payment. Please note: we
have received quite a few orders for which we have never received payment. As we set stock into a "Hold" category upon receipt of the order, that is not fair to other potential buyers. Therefore, any order for which we have not received payment with one week of our acknowledgement will be cancelled. If the stock is still available when we receive payment, we will - of course - still fill it as best we can. Gift certificates We've received lots of requests for gift certificates over the years - especially around the Holidays. They are available in any denomination, may be used for anything on the list, as well as packing and shipping charges. If you would like to give one to a friend or loved one, please CLICK HERE to load the request form. Plants Bulbophyllum blumei $20] (1 LB) This is one of the easiest bulbophyllums to grow! As an added bonus, these look a lot like red and yellow masdevallias, and if you can't grow those, this is a great substitute. These are mature divisions mounted on cork bark. Bulbophyllum saurocephalum $16] (1 LB) The translation of the species name is "reptile head," and it seems aptly named, as the pendant inflorescence appears to be covered with little snake heads! These are flowering size divisions established in 3" pots. Lankesterella orthantha $50] (1/2 LB) ONLY A FEW LEFT! A real rarity in orchid collections, this is a true miniature from the jungles of Brazil. It requires shady, moist, buoyant air and intermediate conditions year round. The flowers are borne on a pendulous raceme. These are mature plants mounted on tree fern.
Miltassia Cairns 'Haiku Monarch' 4.5" S/H pot $17] (3 LB) [6" S/H pot $25] (4 LB) [overgrown 4" pot $23] (2 LB) Don't pass this one up! These plants are flowering size, with many pseudobulbs and new growths. Those in semi-hydroponic TM pots have just been transferred, so will need some time to become established. The few remaining plants in 4" pots are very large, multi-growth plants that are destined for 6" pots, or larger. This clone is very easy to grow, and the waterfall pattern on the lip shows it's miltoniopsis parentage. Oncidium (Macmex x splendidum) $30] (1 LB) This cross is intended to take the branched, multi-flower habit of Macmex and add the largeflowered, broad-lipped traits of splendidum. The flowers of Onc. Macmex are typically 1.5" across, while the Onc. splendidum parent has flowers with a lip alone that's more than 2" across! These are replate flasks of compot-ready seedlings planted at 25 per flask. A First Rays exclusive. Pescleanthes (Pescatorea wallisii x Cochleanthes River's Edge) Gro-Box $25 each] (1 LB) [Seedling $3 each, 2 for $5] (1/4 LB) This hybrid of my own creation is intended to bring about flatter petal presentation than either parent, while retaining the bold lip of the cochleanthes. River's Edge, by the way, is Cochleanthes amazonica x Cochleanthes marginata. Both parents are very easy to grow. The replate flasks - actually "Gro-Boxes" - contain at least 25 seedlings, and are ready for compots. The seedlings are established in 2.25" pots and growing like weeds. Phalaenopsis Brother Glory 'Long Fong' $20] (1 LB) This mericlone has white flowers having excellent shape and substance, and the concentric red barring gives them a "gigantea" appearance. Flowering size in 4" pots.
Phalaenopsis Carmela's Brite Lites x Brother Sally Taylor $10] (1 LB) These flowers have excellent substance, and most have bloomed as very heavily blotched reds that some look to be solid in color. Flowering size in 4" pots. Pleurothallis brighamii $15] (1/4 LB) An easy-to-grow VERY miniature from Central America; these like it warm, so grow them with your phalaenopsis. Standing only a couple of inches tall, these are clusters of plants in 2.25" pots, and will likely bloom in season, next summer. Each tiny plant is capable of producing several, successively blooming yellow-to dark green flowers with brown to red-brown striping. These are just getting established in loose sphagnum, so if you wish to mount them or grow them in semi-hydroponics, now is the perfect time to move them on. (at Jay Pfahl's website) Sarcochilus hartmannii $10] (1/4 LB) An easy-to-grow species that's native to Australia; grow these along side of your phalaenopsis. A miniature plant ( narrow, eight-inch leaves when mature) these are in 2.25"- 2.5" pots, with two- to four-inch leaves, and will likely bloom in about a year with white flowers bearing pink spots and centers. A Few Supplies Larger orders of supplies may be shipped separately from plants, with shipping billed (at cost) to your credit card. Supplies do not count towards free postage on larger orders. SEMI-HYDROPONICS STARTER KITS We received a lot of interest in our unique "semi-hydroponic " technique of orchid culture, so we have assembled a complete starter kit to get you going!
The kit consists of two 4.5" semi-hydroponic pots, PrimeAgra growing medium, K-L-N Root Grow for presoaking the medium, a 2-year supply of Dyna-Gro fertilizer and Pro-teKt, and complete instructions. Semi-Hydroponics Starter Kit for 2 plants: $25 (5 LB) DYNA-GRO NUTRITIONAL SOLUTIONS We are very pleased to recommend and offer Dyna-Gro products to our customers. We've been using them exclusively for several years, and have seen tremendous growth and blooming in all of our plants, even those with "reluctant" natures. We recommend one-half (1/2) teaspoon per gallon of solution every time you water. These contain all of the nutrients your plants need. A quart can make up to 750 gallons of nutrient solution. Dyna-Gro Plant Health Special This has been so popular, we decided to continue the offer! Get one quart each of Dyna-Gro Grow, Bloom, and Pro-teKt solutions for only $32, a savings of 10% compared to individual prices Plant Health Special for $32 Dyna-Gro Liquid Grow Solution (7-9-5): Quart $12 (3 LB) Dyna-Grow Liquid Bloom Solution (3-12-6): Quart $13 (3 LB) Dyna-Gro Pro-TeKt (0-0-3) - A concentrated liquid supplement which supplies higher levels of potassium and silicon to build strong cell walls in plants. The stronger cell walls are said to provide a barrier to piercing-sucking insects and invading fungi. Using Pro-TeKt reduces disease and insect problems, increases stem strength and leaf positioning, improves photosynthesis, and increases heat and drought tolerance. Use as a supplement with any complete nutrient formula to reduce applications of insecticides and fungicides for all plants. If you use reverse-osmosis water, the combination of nutrient solution and Pro-TeKt will balance the overly-acidic ph of the fertilizer alone. Quart $10.50 (2-1/2 LB) Dyna-Gro K-L-N Concentrate - Great for transplanting; stimulates root growth. If you use the ceramic hydroponic medium below, add this to your presoaking solution: 8-ounce $10 (1 LB) SuperThrive
I've long been a believer in this stuff. Maybe their hype in their ads is a bit much, but "seeing is believing!" SuperThrive is a solution containing a rooting hormone and vitamins. Used regularly as a supplement to your feeding regimen, you should see improved root growth, which in turn leads to better plants and better flowering. One bottle used at the recommended one-drop-per-gallon rate is good for about 2000 gallons of feeding solution. 4 Ounce $9 (1 LB) Neem Oil You read about this stuff in the July 1999 Orchids magazine. An all-natural way to rid your collection of insects, and keep them away, without the fear of breeding resistant insect strains, as has been seen with extensive preventive insecticide applications. Click here to learn more. Use at a rate of between one-half (1/2) and one (1) ounce per gallon of spray at a time when the plants are cool. 8-Ounce $10 (1 LB) (Gallons available upon special $125) PrimeAgra TM Ceramic Hydroponic Medium Similar to the product "Aliflor," but of far superior quality. This stuff has tremendous wicking action, so your plants' root systems can grow in a totally uniform environment, no matter what the depth. Use the 8-16 mm grade for mature plants, the 4-8 mm grade only for tiny seedlings and plants with very fine roots. The relative uniformity of the spheres also provides lots of air movement around the root system. Click here for more information mm: 5 $7 (5 LB) 25 $24 (25 LB) (2 OR 3 $20, 4 OR $18) 4-8 mm: 5 $8 (7 LB) SOLD OUT - AWAITING CONTAINER FROM EUROPE Custom Media Blends If you don't want to mix it yourself, but have a formula in mind using the ingredients below, we'll make it up for you. Minimum purchase is 20 liters at $20. Please specify percentages of ingredients in the comments field below. 25 $25 Coconut Husk Chips A great replacement for fir bark, it holds water better than bark, and rewets instantly This material has been washed and pressed to reduce tannins, but it is always a good idea to rinse coir products before use. 11liter $2 5 $8 25 $25 CURRENTLY SOLD OUT
Charcoal (medium grade, 1/2" - 3/4" chunks) Used straight for vandaceous plants, and as a "sweetening" additive in most other media 5 $6 25 $23 SpongeRock (#3 coarse perlite) Used in most media as a way to improve air flow. 5 $5 25 $18 ProMix HP Used in most "Mud" mixes, some growers use it straight. 5 $5 25 $18 Sphagnum Moss This Chilean moss is just like the premium, long-fibered New Zealand moss, but at a better price. One kilogram of sphagnum should pot up about " pots or "- 6" pots. One-half (1/2) $12 (1-1/2 LB) One (1) $19 (2-1/2 LB) Two (2) kilograms for $35 (5 LB) Five (5) kilogram Mini-Bale for $70 (12 LB) Coconut Husk Fiber Used a lot as basket liner material to hold charcoal or other media in place, it is also a very good, fast drying medium for plants that like to be really airy. 5 $5 (1 LB) 25 $18 (4 LB) Cork Bark Slabs This virgin bark from Portugal is just great for mounting plants! The coarse surface gives the roots a great hold, while its light weight is easy for hanging. Good for rafts, too. I've got all kinds of sizes available, so please let me know what you need in the comments section below. Sold by weight, the piece pictured is about 9" x 19" x 1" thick, and weighs a shade over a pound. When ordering, please specify the number and size of the of pieces desired in the "comments" section below. Cork $5/pound Plastic Pots OK, if you're gonna buy media, the least we can do is provide the pots, too!
These are your standard, round pots; about as tall as their diameter. Sold in packs of 10 pots only. ten 2.25" pots for $1.50 ten 3" pots for $2.00 ten 4.5" pots for $3 ten 6" pots for $4.50 ten 6" pans for $4.50 (low profile, great for phals and large compots) Clear Plastic Pots A lot of folks believe that these translucent pots provide better growth by exposing the root system to the light. No matter what, you can certainly keep close tabs on the condition of the roots and medium! Sold in packs of 10 pots only. ten 3.5" square x 4" tall pots for $2.50 ten 6.5" diameter round x 5" tall pots for 6.50 ten 7.5" diameter round x 5.5" tall pots for 9.50 Net Pots There are lots of uses for these: Got a big plant that likes it's roots to dry rapidly? Invert one in the bottom of the pot before adding medium. Like the idea of hydroponics, but want to start economically? Use these, and set them in a tray kept constantly full of nutrient solution. I pot up a lot of plants in sphagnum using these, as they don't stay sopping. 3" Net Pots: [ 10 for $2] Semi-Hydroponic TM Pots These are the custom-made plastic pots we use for most of our own collection. They have a tall profile, and are available in three sizes: 4.5" diameter by about 5.5" tall, 6" diameter by 7.5" tall, and 8" by 8". Read more about growing with them HERE. New supplier, and lower prices too! 4.5" Semi-Hydroponic TM Pot [ 10 for $5] - (5 liters of medium will fill 6 pots) 6" Semi-Hydroponic TM Pot [ 10 for $8] - (5 liters of medium will fill 2 pots) 8" Semi-Hydroponic TM Pot [ 5 for $7] - (5 liters of medium will fill 1 pot) Traditional, 3-Component Hydroponic Pots Consisting of an inner "culture pot," a decorative outer pot (in black or white) that also serves as your nutrient solution reservoir, and a gauge so you can monitor the solution depth, these are quite popular with folks growing only a few plants in the home. I no longer stock these, but they can be drop-shipped to you by my supplier. $4.00, $4.50, $6.00, $9.00. Please use the field below to specify the quantities, sizes and colors desired, and whether color substitutions are OK, and we'll check

The Orchid Paintings of Franz Bauer by Joyce Stewart and William T. Stearn $10 I really didn't know if this should be placed under "Books" or "Artwork!" Franz Bauer ( ) was the first botanical artist at the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, and is considered by many to be the greatest of his field. This hardbound volume (160 pages) provides information about the structure and function of orchid flowers using Bauer's own drawings, but really shines in its selection of color paintings. ONLY ONE (1) AVAILABLE Orchid Artwork If you are interested in the antique orchid prints or reproductions, please go back to the home page and use the links (there were just too many for this list). Orchid Note Cards by Karen Nisbett A fantastic artist, many of you will recognize Karen as a long-time participant in the internet orchid community. We are very pleased to be able to offer her note cards on our list. Consisting of 8 cards and matching envelopes, these are a nice, whimsical treatment of orchids in an everyday setting, and will be a real treat for you and their recipients. K Nisbett Note $10 per set Price Reduced! Our first offering - and still a popular one, too! - is a lovely set of two prints of "Orchid Species of Vietnam" by artist Dang Xuang Bui, consisting of Cymbidium lowianum and Paphiopedilum delenatii. With images measuring approximately 11" x 14" - roughly 16" x 20" mounted and matted - these are really quite impressive. Printed on very heavy stock, and coated to prevent ultraviolet degradation, they are available mounted and matted, or simply as posters. Either way, they'll be a great addition to any room. Mounted and $25 per set. If you want a different mat, or framing, or other service, just drop us an message. Please send me a set of: Mounted Prints with Green $35/set
Mounted Prints with White $35/set Unmounted $10/set Next is the beginning of a series of "impressionistic" images of a variety of orchids. Limited to a printing of 100 copies each, these are mounted and matted. At 8" x 10", these make great accent pieces, or additions to your office. They make great presents for your favorite orchid enthusiast, too! Matted Phalaenopsis violacea print [ $10 each] First on the list is Phalaenopsis violacea, or actually bellina; the print is based upon a beautiful specimen grown at Longwood Gardens near Philadelphia. Matted Cypripedium reginae print [ $10 each] The second in the series is Cypripedium reginae, the "Queen of Lady's Slippers," a native of North America. Also offered at $10. Matted Cymbidium dayanum print [ $10 each] The most recent addition to the series, this pastel represents a plant that has become a real "keeper" in our collection.
