READ THE LABEL AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS BEFORE USING. USING THIS PRODUCT IN A MANNER THAT IS INCONSISTANT WITH THE LABEL MAY BE AN OFFENCE. FOLLOW THE CODE OF PRACTICE FOR USING PLANT PROTECTION PRODUCTS BISHOP (MAPP 14055) A suspension concentrate formulation containing 40 g/l nicosulfuron. IRRITANT IRRITATING TO SKIN VERY TOXIC TO AQUATIC ORGANISMS, MAY CAUSE LONG- TERM ADVERSE EFFECTS IN THE AQUATIC ENVIRONMENT DANGEROUS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT Keep out of reach of children. When using, do not eat, drink or smoke. After contact with skin, wash immediately with plenty of water. Keep away from food, drink and animal feeding stuffs. This material and its container must be disposed of in a safe way. Wear suitable protective clothing and gloves. If swallowed, seek medical advice immediately and show this container or label. Use appropriate containment to avoid environmental contamination. To avoid risks to man and the environment, comply with the instructions for use.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Precautions marked * are a legal requirement Operator Protection * Engineering control of operator exposure must be used where reasonably practicable in addition to the following personal protective equipment: * WEAR SUITABLE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING (Coveralls and suitable protective gloves) when handling the concentrate. * However, engineering controls may replace personal protective equipment if a COSHH assessment shows that they provide an equal or higher standard of protection. AVOID ALL CONTACT WITH SKIN WASH HANDS AND EXPOSED SKIN BEFORE MEALS AND AFTER WORK. WASH ALL PROTECTIVE CLOTHING thoroughly after use, especially the insides of gloves. Environmental Protection LERAP B DO NOT ALLOW DIRECT SPRAY from horizontal boom sprayers to fall within 5m of the top of the bank of a static or flowing water body unless a Local Environmental Risk Assessment for Pesticides (LERAP) permits a narrower buffer zone or within 1m of the top of a ditch which is dry at the time of application. DO NOT ALLOW DIRECT SPRAY from hand-held sprayers to fall within 1m of the top of a bank of a static or flowing water body. Aim spray away from water. * This product qualifies for inclusion within the Local Environmental Risk Assessment for Pesticides (LERAP) scheme. Before each spraying operation from a horizontal boom sprayer, either a LERAP must be carried out in accordance with PSD published guidance or the statutory buffer zone must be maintained. The results of the LERAP must be recorded and kept available for inspection for three years. Do not contaminate water with this product or its container. Do not clean application equipment near surface water. Avoid contamination via drains from farmyards or roads. Storage and Disposal RINSE CONTAINER THOROUGHLY by using an integrated pressure rinsing device or manually rinsing three times. Add washings to the sprayer at the time of filling and dispose of safely.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE NOTE: These Directions for Use form part of the Approved Product label and must be read before using the product. BISHOP can be used for post-emergence control of a range of grass and broad-leaved weeds in forage maize. Select the appropriate dose according to the species to be controlled but, especially where continuous maize is being grown, also use other herbicides with activity on these weeds in sequence with Bishop to reduce the risk of the development of resistance. BISHOP can be used on all soil types (light, medium and heavy soils) and is unaffected by high organic matter content. RESTRICTIONS Do not apply to any crop suffering from stress. The crop may exhibit transient yellowing, stunting and loss of vigour 1 2 weeks after application but this is quickly grown out of and has no effect on final potential yield. If crops under stress are treated, these symptoms may be more persistent and could result in a loss of yield. Sensitive varieties such as c.v. Rival may display some flower deformation. Do not apply BISHOP to forage maize treated with organophosphate (OP) or organochlorine insecticides. Do not mix with liquid or foliar fertilisers. After application, thorough cleansing of the application equipment is vital to avoid damage other crops see below. Resistance BISHOP is a sulfonylurea herbicide and some weeds are beginning to develop resistance to this class of herbicides. The risk of resistance is increased when herbicides with the same mode of action are used repeatedly over several years in the same field since this selects for resistant biotypes individuals of a susceptible species that survive a correctly applied recommended dose. To avoid or delay the onset of resistance, alternate or tank-mix herbicides with different modes of action and do not rely on BISHOP or any other ALS inhibitor herbicide (HRAC Code B) as the sole means of control for grass or broad-leaved weeds in successive crops. Some species, e.g. black-grass, wild oats and Italian rye-grass, have developed resistance to some herbicides and this could result in poor control. Guidelines on strategies to manage weed resistance have been published by the Weed Resistance Action Group and copies are available from HGCA, your distributor or your crop advisor. CROP SPECIFIC INFORMATION Control of annual grasses: Annual grasses (see table below) can be controlled with 1.0 L/ha BISHOP applied when the grasses are 2 lvs early tillering and the maize is at the 2 8 leaf stage. Control of broad-leaved weeds: Broad-leaved weeds can be controlled by application of L/ha BISHOP when the weeds are at 2 6 true leaves and the crop is at the 2 8 leaf stage. Select the appropriate dose from the list of weed
susceptibilities below but note that for optimum control of fat-hen, this weed must be actively growing and not suffering from any form of stress. Suppression of couch grass: Common couch can be suppressed by application of 1.5 L/ha BISHOP when the couch has 6 leaves and the maize is at the 2 8 leaf stage. Where protracted emergence of the couch is expected, splitting the application with an initial dose of 1.0 L/ha followed by a further 0.5 L/ha days later may give improved control. Note that BISHOP can give 85% control of the top growth of couch but the effect on re-growth in following seasons has not yet been evaluated. WEED CONTROL Species Recommended dose (Litres product/ha) Level of Activity Grasses: Annual meadow-grass 1.0 S Annual rye-grasses 1.0 S Common couch 1.5 MS Broad-leaved weeds: Annual mercury 1.5 MS Black-bindweed 1.5 MS Common chickweed 1.5 S Common amaranthe 1.0 S Common orache 1.5 MS Fat-hen 1.5 MS Groundsel 1.0 S Mayweeds 1.5 S Pale persicaria 1.5 MS Redshank 1.5 MS Shepherd s-purse 1.0 S S = Susceptible (80-100% control); MS = Moderately Susceptible (70 90% control) Note: Limited data supports the claim that 1.5 L/ha BISHOP can also control charlock, field pansy and volunteer oilseed rape. APPLICATION BISHOP should be applied in 200 L/ha as a MEDIUM spray as defined by BCPC using an application pressure of 2 3 bar to achieve good coverage of the target weeds. DO NOT overlap spray swathes. Do not spray if rainfall is expected within 6 hours of application. BISHOP is a sulfonyl urea herbicide and must not be applied in mixture or sequence with other sulfonyl urea herbicides. MIXING Before spraying it is important to check all hoses, filters and nozzles, and to ensure that the sprayer is clean and correctly set to give an even application at the correct volume. Shake the container of BISHOP thoroughly and half fill the spray tank with clean water. Begin agitation
and add the required quantity of CAESER directly to the tank. Add the remainder of the water and agitate the mixture thoroughly before and during spraying. COMPATIBILITY AND SEQUENCES BISHOP is physically compatible with some other herbicides, insecticides and trace elements but the crop safety and product efficacy has not yet been evaluated. All mixtures and sequences are used at the grower s risk. CLEANING OF APPLICATION EQUIPMENT To avoid damage to crops other than forage maize, the application equipment must be thoroughly de-contaminated after application. Do not drain or flush the spray equipment on to land planted or intended to be planted with trees or crops other than forage maize. Immediately after application, drain the tank completely and wash down with clean water. Rinse out the tank and flush through the booms and hoses. Half-fill the tank with clean water and add the recommended dose of ALL CLEAR EXTRA. Agitate and then flush the boom and hoses with the cleaning solution. Top up the tank so that it is completely full and leave to stand for 15 minutes with the agitation running. Flush the booms and hoses again and drain completely. Remove the nozzles and filters and clean separately in a solution of 50mls ALL CLEAR EXTRA in 10 litres of water. Rinse the tank again with clean water, using at least 10% of the tank volume and dispose of the washings safely. DO NOT spray onto a sensitive crop or land intended to be cropped with a sensitive crop. For disposal of washings in the UK, follow the Code of Practice for the Safe Use of Pesticides on Farms and Holdings (MAFF Publications 1998) while in Ireland you should comply with local and national regulations. FOLLOWING CROPS: Only cereals or maize should be planted after an application of BISHOP to forage maize. Winter wheat may be planted 4 months after application of 1.5 L/ha BISHOP while maize can be sown the following spring. Any crop may be sown in the second autumn following treatment. When winter wheat is sown as a following crop, it should not be under-sown with any other species.
