1 May 2012 The GREENLEAF NEWSLETTER HOURS: MON - SAT 8:00 A.M. TO 6:30 P.M. SUN 10:00 A.M. TO 6:00 P.M (972) FAX (972) info@shadesofgreeninc.com By Brice Creelman Some of the plants we talked about in April were in short supply and we will have some ready on May 15th. There are some other cool new plants for us all to try in May so dig out more of that lawn and make some more bed space. It will be worth it! Baptisia Carolina Moonlight Baptisias won t be blooming in a one gallon container so look to buy this one green. Moonlight is a cross bebaptisia Carolina Moonlight tween Baptisia minor right in here in Collin County and Baptisia sphaerocarpa in the loamy soils of Grayson county. There are tons in the fields around Tioga. Always blooming each year so I assume horses don t eat them. Find a good sunny spot for your Baptisia because it will get 36 both ways and it wants to be established for a year before it will bloom. Certainly the centerpiece of the garden. Pale yellow flowers for 4-5 weeks in April May, nice blue foliage the rest of the year. Unusual black seed pods. Baptisia is a premium landscape plant. Dianthus Coconut Punch Dianthus Coconut Punch Perennial Dianthus have come a long way during the last couple of years. They tend to be more heat tolerant and bloom longer and rebloom in the fall. Coconut Punch get 12 tall and wide in full sun to part shade. Butterflies love dianthus, no insect or disease problems. Fragrant and with long stems it makes a great cut flower. Red and white Continued on pg 4, See May Be Bloomin

2 Plant heat loving seasonal color such as Lantana, Zinnias, Vinca, Purslane we have lots that will work! Perennials once again, we ve got the Right Plant for the Right Place! Best to wait on B&B (balled and burlapped) trees until the fall. Container grown trees can be planted now, just be prepared to hand water or use Treegator bags on them to get them through the summer s heat. Incorporate some tropical color out on your patio or pool deck for some extra pizzazz! Tropical Hibiscus, Mandevilla, and Duranta, are just a few of the choices you ll find here. Most tropical color blooms on new growth, so be sure to fertilize regularly throughout the summer with Colorscapes or ColorStar to enhance blooming. Prune just for controlling odd shape growth and to maintain size on plants. Fertilize with Colorscapes or ColorStar on annuals and perennials to keep them blooming happily. Use SuperThrive on newly planted plants or any stressed plants and trees. Use Gardenville on lawns again at the end of May or beginning of June. Water As needed. Hand water newly planted plants to help them establish before summer s heat kicks in. Remember a lot of our drought-tolerant plants have been grown with regular watering in their pots. You need to hand water them after planting for the first two to three weeks and gradually wean them off frequent watering as they establish. Once established (about a month) they can survive on less water. Consider converting your beds to drip irrigation to use water more efficiently. Landscape water restrictions are probably here for good so the sooner you adapt, the happier you and your plantings will be. Once you see fungus it is hard to clear up the affected spots, but you can spray to prevent new or other foliage from getting the problem. We carry an organic disease control product called Serenade Garden Disease Control. This product is safe for use on fruits, vegetables, and ornamentals. It can be used around people, pets, and wildlife. You can learn more about it through their website, As always, we try to give you earth friendly options for pest control. Other Keep Mosquitoes Away with our favorite non-toxic repellant, Sandalwood Mosquito Sticks. They really work great and even smell good! Mulch, Mulch, Mulch. Keep mulch at a minimum of 2 on all planting bed areas. With summer s heat around the corner it will conserve water and keep your plantings healthier. We have a coupon to help you out! Keep up with the veggies you planted. Have more than you can use? Donate them to your local food pantry. Put out your Hummingbird feeder! Better yet, plant the right plants they prefer. We ve got a gorgeous selection of plants that attract Hummingbirds and can help you make the right selection. Pests As we ve stated before, it is virtually impossible for us to give accurate pest advice over the phone. Bring in samples of problems in a baggie and we ll advise you on choices for control. With insects, you identify the insect first then use an appropriate control for that bug. Check Crape myrtles for scale on branches. The scale look like the small white fuzzy cotton pieces attached to the stems. Control with All Seasons Oil which suffocates them. 2

3 By Rob Wier Ah yes, just sitting down in my favorite chair on the back porch. Another April complete, 8,000 bags of bagged goods loaded, 3,300 flats of flowers, 18,000 perennials found a new home to bring joy, color, butterflies and hummingbirds for years to come. 4 May Be Bloomin, Continued from pg 1 frilled double blooms, low mound of foliage like Firewitch. It loves our alkaline soil. Not too much water. It likes it drier than wetter. Sun to part shade. Hemerocallis Fairy Tale Pink helpful. 24 tall and perfect! Hemerocallis Fairy Tale Pink Sun to part shade. This was the first daylily I bought at a daylily sale for $15 in 1980 something. A lot of money for a minimum wager! Still holds up as one of the best after all these years. Best blooming of almost all the daylilies is around Memorial Day. No plant is easier to grow than a daylily. Gorgeous, thick diamond-dusted blooms pinker than pink. 5 1/2 across, can re-bloom but don t count on it in Texas. Don t divide unless you have less blooms after 4-5 years. Little shade in the afternoon will be Hemerocallis Pardon Me Probably the most reliable re-blooming red daylily. 18 tall so plant it in front of Fairy Tale Pink. Daylilies attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Sun or a little shade is better for darker colored blooms in Texas. As a side both these daylilies came bare-root from a grower in Nova Scotia, Canada where I spent my summers as a young punk. Hemerocallis Pardon Me Phlox Minnie Pearl Native hybrid found in Mississippi on the side of the road. This plant should do fine here, but it is new and don't plant it yet if you can t take a heartbreak. Will stand a little wetter spot than other phlox. Probably some shade would be ok. You will be trying it for the first time. Introduced by Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery in North Carolina, who always names his plants in a redneck sort of way. New. 18 tall, great cut flowers. Butterflies and Hummers will love it. Hope it does well. Could take the place of Phlox David easily. Might leave its price tag hanging off the side :-). Phlox Minnie Pearl Sedum Silver Stone Wow, nice color, nice habit. Kinda like Lemon Coral with blue-green foliage. Use in planters or small rock gardens. Too new to plant in large areas. So new, not sure how it will do. Has to make it through our intense summer. Yellow flowers, foliage will have a tinge of color in the cooler months. Softer than our grey sedum. Sedum Silver Stone 4

5 By Jeff McCauley Finally, I have someone to assist me in my design, consultations, and coordination of our Landscape department. You might already recognize him if you were to see him. His name is Casey Wier, otherwise known as Rob Wier s son. He s worked here for almost 6 years. He started out working in the nursery during high school. Then he got a promotion to tree installer while attending UNT in Denton. He mastered that rather well and you may have trees he planted in your landscape that are doing well. To add to his repertoire, he began doing spring clean-ups. And second to last but not least, he started taking my scaled drawings and laying out and installing landscapes with a crew. Now that he has graduated UNT, he is working for us full time doing consultations, designs and overseeing a landscape crew. So, with that background I would say he knows his stuff. In any sales position the most important attribute is good people skills along with honesty and integrity in everything he does. I haven't let him loose totally, reviewing his designs and estimates with my 35 years of experience. We are able to add the consultation service for the 1st time this year and are turning around our designs more promptly. Casey will eventually streamline the technology part of the Landscape department, an area where I am lacking skills but like all young people he has grown up with it! Compliments are abundant on his performance from our customers. Maybe in a couple of years I ll have the choice to sleep-in a bit, or leave early. I might even start shooting under a 100 on the golf course or catch that trophy bass with my name on it. Give Casey a call at x 107, or you can him at casey@shadesofgreeninc.com. You won t regret it!
