Agastache Blue Boa (Hyssop) β COLOR: Purple HEIGHT: 16 BLOOM: Late Summer SOIL: Well drained COMMENTS: Luxurious, deep violet-blue flower spikes over ultra-green foliage.. It is drought tolerant once established and attracts hummingbirds as well as butterflies. Amsonia tabemaemontana -variety salicifolla (Blue Star) β COLOR: Light Blue HEIGHT: 2-3 BLOOM: Late Spring/Early Summer SOIL: Wet COMMENTS: Long-lived, clump-forming, herbaceous perennial features 3-4 weeks of light blue, star-shaped flowers in spring. Followed by ornamental seed pods. Easy to grow, no-fuss native. Aquilegia canadensis Little Lanterns (Wild Columbine) COLOR: red spurs, yellow sepals HEIGHT: 18 BLOOM: April June SOIL: moist, well-drained soil COMMENTS: Great and consistent performance. *Asarum canadense (Wild Ginger) COLOR: Maroon-brown (beneath foliage) HEIGHT: 6-12 BLOOM: Late Spring/Early Summer SOIL: Well drained, acidic COMMENTS: This deciduous perennial groundcover has unique velvety green, heart-shaped leaves and is a great addition to the spring woodland garden. Roots have similar scent to culinary ginger, but not related. Chelone lyonii Hot Lips (Pink Turtlehead) COLOR: Brilliant rose-pink HEIGHT: 2-4 BLOOM: August September SOIL: average to moist COMMENTS: Interesting bronze-green early season growth. Good cut flower. It bursts with golden yellow flowers that age to various shades of bronzy orange in the late summer. Eupatorium coelestinum (Wild Ageratum/Mistflower) COLOR: Bright Blue HEIGHT: 2-3 BLOOM: Late summer SOIL: average COMMENTS: Cut back in early summer for denser, more upright growth. Eupatorium dubium Little Joe (3-nerved Joe Pye Weed) β COLOR: Pink-lavender HEIGHT: 4-5 BLOOM: July September SOIL: moist, acidic COMMENTS: Shorter than most other Joe Pye Weeds. Helenium autumnale Mariachi Salsa (Sneezeweed) β COLOR: RedOrange HEIGHT: BLOOM: Late Summer/fall SOIL: Moist, Well-drained COMMENTS: These bold, spicy red flowers age to shades of orange and yellow from late summer through fall. Heliopsis helianthoides * Summer Nights, Summer Sun (False Sunflower) β COLOR: golden yellow HEIGHT: 3-6 BLOOM: late summer, early fall SOIL: moist or dry COMMENTS: A self-sowing butterfly magnet. Birds love the seeds that follow blooming. *Hyacinthoides hispanica (Wood Hyacinth/Spanish Bluebell) COLOR: Bluish Lavender HEIGHT: 9-18 BLOOM: April, May SOIL: Average, well-drained soil COMMENTS: Easily grown. Plants go dormant by early summer. Does well in rock gardens *Iris cristata (Wild Iris) COLOR: blue HEIGHT: 6" BLOOM: May SOIL: rich, moist, well-drained COMMENTS: Woodland or peat bank; neat fans of small sword-like leaves, flat star-shaped flowers facing upward; spreads slowly until hindered. Iris versicolor (Blue Flag) COLOR: blue HEIGHT: 3 BLOOM: May & June SOIL: Moist. COMMENTS: Native wetland plant. Moist location essential. Liatris spicata (Blazing Star) β COLOR: lavender spikes HEIGHT: 3-5 BLOOM: July August SOIL: average, moist. COMMENTS: Excellent cut flower. Adaptable to sites with poor soil. A butterfly magnet. Lobelia siphilitica (Great Blue Lobelia) β COLOR: blue HEIGHT: 30 BLOOM: July September SOIL: moist COMMENTS: Vigorous; will self-seed Meehania cordata (Meehan s Mint, or Creeping Mint) COLOR: Blue Violet HEIGHT: 12 BLOOM: Late Spring-Early Summer SOIL: Moist to average COMMENTS: Long, trailing stems run across the ground and root along the way. In late spring the green carpet gives way to hundreds of blue flowers opening to reveal spotted throats. *Mertensia virginica (Virginia Bluebells) COLOR: blue HEIGHT: 20" BLOOM: April May SOIL: rich, moist soil COMMENTS: New flowers look pink but open blue. Strong clump forming plant; goes dormant after blooming. Monarda didyma - Jacob Cline (Bee Balm) β COLOR: rich red HEIGHT: 30 BLOOM: June July SOIL: moist, rich soil COMMENTS: Fragrant aromatic foliage; numerous tubular flowers extend out of a ball-shaped whorl; vigorous growth habits; much more mildew resistant and larger flowered; good cut flower. Monarda fistulosa Clair Grace (Wild Bergamont) β COLOR: Pale lavender HEIGHT: 2-4 BLOOM: June July SOIL: average COMMENTS: Aromatic leaves are used in Earl Grey tea. Monarda punctate (Spotted Beebalm/Horsemint) β COLOR: Pink HEIGHT: BLOOM: Late Summer/Fall SOIL: Well Drained COMMENTS: This aromatic plant is valuable ecological species, Monarda punctata is the equivalent of a juice bar at the gym for nectar loving/needing insects! *Oenothera fruticose Siskiyou Pink (Sundrops/Narrowleaf Evening Primrose) β COLOR: Yellow HEIGHT: BLOOM: Late spring-early summer SOIL: Well drained COMMENTS: Great early summer color. Will self sow and create a strong population. Good border plant. *Packera aurea, formerly Senecio aureus (Golden Ragwort) COLOR: bright golden HEIGHT: 12 BLOOM: May SOIL: Average to moist COMMENTS: Prefers partial shade. A strong ground cover where happy. Lobelia cardinalis (Cardinal Flower) COLOR: scarlet red HEIGHT: 32 BLOOM: July September SOIL: very moist COMMENTS: A spike of flowers; vigorous; will self-seed. This plant is pollinated exclusively by hummingbirds. 5 *Penstemon digitalis (Beardtongue) β COLOR: White HEIGHT: BLOOM: Late Spring - Early Summer SOIL: Well drained COMMENTS: This native makes a stunning display with its brilliant white flowers against a backdrop of deep red foliage. Tough and easy to grow, it tolerates a wide variety of conditions including hot, dry sites. Phlox divaricata - Blue Moon (Wild Blue Phlox) β COLOR: pale blue HEIGHT: 8-10 BLOOM: April May SOIL: Rich COMMENTS: Perfect for shady gardens, wooded areas. Phlox paniculata - Blue Paradise & Robert Poore (Summer Phlox) β COLOR: several varieties available HEIGHT: varies BLOOM: Summer SOIL: Average to rich COMMENTS: Many varieties check tags. Most are fragrant and are great cut flowers. *Podophyllum peltatum (May Apple) COLOR: White or white HEIGHT: BLOOM: March-May SOIL: Moist, well-drained COMMENTS: Nice addition to a shade or woodland garden. *Polygonatum falcatum (Variegated Solomon s Seal) COLOR: White HEIGHT: 2-3 BLOOM: April-May SOIL: Moist, Well-drained COMMENTS: Woodland Garden plant with dark green leaves edged in white. White bell-shaped flowers emerge from beneath the stem. Pycanthemum muticum (Short-Toothed Mountain Mint) β COLOR: White HEIGHT: 2-3 BLOOM: Late Summer SOIL: Well-drained COMMENTS: Very attractive to beneficial garden insects such as bees & butterflies. Mountain Mint is loaded with pulegone, the same insect repellent found in pennyroyal. It can be rubbed on the skin to repel mosquitoes! Ratibida columnifera Red Midget (Mexican Hat Plant) β COLOR: RedOrange HEIGHT: BLOOM: Late Summer/Fall SOIL: Well-drained COMMENTS: Fun, unique flowers dance above mounds of fine green foliage from June until frost. A native prairie plant, this dwarf variety of the species performs exceptionally well in hot and dry conditions. Ruellia humilis (Fringed-leaf Petunia) COLOR: pink to purple HEIGHT: 2-3 BLOOM: All summer SOIL: Dry, basic. COMMENTS: Long flowering period. Drought tolerant. *Salvia gregii Maraschino (Autumn Sage) β COLOR: pink to red HEIGHT: 3-4 BLOOM: June-July SOIL: Well drained. COMMENTS: Insect & disease resistant. Butterfly & hummingbird magnet. Drought tolerant Salvia lyrata Purple Knockout (Lyre-Leaf Sage) β COLOR: light blue HEIGHT: 18 BLOOM: Late Spring-Early Summer SOIL: Average to moist COMMENTS: Drought and humidity tolerant. *Sanguinaria canadensis (Bloodroot) COLOR: White HEIGHT: 6-10 BLOOM: March-April SOIL: Moist, well drained. COMMENTS: Each flower stalk has one solitary flower. The sap of the plant is red, thus the name. Sedum Autumn Fire (Stonecrop) β COLOR: Rose Pink HEIGHT: 2-3 BLOOM: Late Summer SOIL: Average to dry, well-drained COMMENTS: Sedums love hot, dry conditions. Excellent as a perennial border, in rock gardens & as ground cover. Flowers start as pink, age to salmon bronze and finish off a deep coppery red. *Rudbeckia hirta Prairie Sun (Black-eyed Susan) β COLOR: Yellow-tipped Orange HEIGHT: BLOOM: June to frost SOIL: Well-drained COMMENTS: A long summer-to-fall bloom of large, daisy-like flowers (to 5 diameter) featuring orange rays tipped with lemon yellow and greenish center disks. Solidago rugose Fireworks (Goldenrod) β COLOR: Yellow HEIGHT: 3-4 BLOOM: Late Summer SOIL: Moist, well-drained COMMENTS: Striking, clump-forming perennial with stiff lateral electric-yellow flowers that are reminiscent of exploding fireworks. Fireworks wrinkle-leaf goldenrod attracts many pollinating insects when flowering. *Spigelia marilandica (Indian Pink, or Woodland Pinkroot) β COLOR: Red HEIGHT: BLOOM: late spring-early summer SOIL moist, average soil COMMENTS: Indian pink is a long-lived perennial that brings stunning color to the summer garden. Vivid red tubular flowers borne in terminal clusters open to expose a chartreuse yellow interior, reminiscent of a firecracker exploding. *Stylophorum diphyllum (Celandine Poppy/Wood Poppy) COLOR: Golden yellow HEIGHT: BLOOM: Spring SOIL: Moist to moderately damp COMMENTS: Easy to grow native that will self-sow and form a ground cover. Blooms primarily in the morning. Each flower blooms only once and then melts. Though native of moist meadows, it is plenty tolerant of hot dry summers.
