Plan now for your summer garden, Junior Fair entries and community service projects! We urge you to take advantage of this opportunity to grow old standards as well as more unusual plant varieties. Plants are grown and supplied by Jacquie Closson s A New Leaf Greenhouse. ORDERS DUE MARCH 3 RD AND PICK-UP IS MAY 24 FAIRGROUNDS. ANNUAL FLOWERS $3.25 EACH WAX BEGONIA 6-12 inches high and wide. Blooms from June to frost, comes in white, pink and red with shiny green or bronze leaves. Plants tolerate periods of drought due to their thick and waxy leaves which help minimize water loss in hot weather. Can be grown in containers or in the garden. Great as a border. Must come inside for the winter. Makes a nice houseplant. Likes full sun to part shade. IMPATIENS You can use impatiens flowers as bedding plants, border plants or in containers. They enjoy moist but well draining soil and partial to deep shade. They do not do as well in full sun, but if you would like to plant them in full sun, they will need to be acclimated to the harsher light. You can do this by exposing the impatiens plants to increasing amount of sunlight over the course of a week. PANSY Mixed varieties. Huge blossoms marked in striking, contrasting colors. Easy to grow in the sun or light shade. Great for containers or the border. PETUNIA Mixed colors/varieties. Trumpet-shaped flowers with branching foliage. Great for bedding, edging, baskets, tubs and window boxes Plants like full or part sun. MARIGOLD Mixed varieties. Easily grown. Naturally wellgroomed, they bloom abundantly until frost and provide carefree color in a sunny bed. SNAPDRAGON Montego mix-a formula F1 Hybrid mix of uniform blooming colors - flower about 5-7 days earlier than other dwarf snaps. Excellent garden performance during hot weather conditions, Base branching -sturdy plants. CALENDULA Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade Height: 18 to 24 inches Spacing: 24 to 36 inches. 2 OSTESPERMUM ASTI MIX The well branched plants produce in pure, clean beautiful flower colors. Tolerance to cool and hot conditions. Mixture of lavender shades, purple and white. 4 Pot Height / width " NEW GUINEA IMPATIENS 4 Pot New Guinea impatiens form compact, succulent subshrubs with branches growing 1 to 2 feet tall by summer's end. Leaves are long and narrow, green, bronze or purple flowers growing up to 2 inches in diameter, are white, pink, lavender, purple, orange, and red. GERBER DAISY 4 Pot Plants thrive in full sun and sandy soil. A little compost added at planting will encourage good flower growth. Crown rot is a common problem with gerbera daisies, which is caused by planting the crowns too deeply. The crown should be visible above the soil and allowed to dry out between each watering. Plants can be mulched, but care must be taken that mulch does not cover the crown. If you live in a wet or humid climate or have heavy soil, try planting in well-draining pots instead. Make sure you plant them with adequate spacing and in high light areas. Water in the morning so leaves can dry out during the day to lessen the risk of rot and fungal diseases. Gerbera daisy care can also be enhanced by using a micro-nutrient liquid fertilizer such as a seaweed or fish emulsion. GYPSOPHILA 'Gypsy Deep Rose' 4 Pot Gypsy Deep Rose is an annual G. muralis with dainty, rose-like blooms. This new variety showed several improvements over comparisons. The flower form is double and semi-double, is a darker rose color and is a larger size, up to 3/8 of an inch. The plant produces a higher number of blooms over a longer flowering season. 'Gypsy Deep Rose' forms an enchanting mounded plant with a height of 8 to 10 inches, spreading 12 to 14 inches. This diminutive plant prefers full sun and adapts to container culture. 'Gypsy Deep Rose' is easily grown. Plants require little maintenance. Gypsophila is often associated with weddings because of their use in bridal bouquets. CALIBRACHOA 4 Pot Mix Crazy, heavy flowering, heat-resistant plants happily cascade from containers or baskets. Long lasting blooms on plants bring on a riot of color in the sun-splashed border. Splendid in the company of petunias and verbenas. Annual, great for Beds, Borders, it likes Full Sun to Part Sun. Grows: inches high and inches wide PERENNIAL FLOWERS 4 $3.25 each POLEMONIUM Blue Jacob s Ladder. Zone Pot Fine green foliage gives a fern-like appearance in the shade garden with the bonus of stalks of bright blue flowers in the spring. This is a shorter variety of Jacob's Ladder. Despite the species name this plant is clump forming. A wonderful accompaniment to all the broader-leaved favorites of the shade garden. Height 8-10 Inches, Spread - 12 Inches, Color Blue/Purple, Bloom Time May-June, Does best in soils that do not dry out. Divide early spring or fall SIDALCEAS 4 Pot The are heavy in blooming, somewhat rare perennial mallows which produce bright, saucershaped flowers (which resembles hollyhocks) on long, slender stems. They attract hummingbirds and butterflies. They are a excellent cut flowers. Sidalcea plants are true perennials grow to 3 feet tall. Winter hardy-zone 5. LUPINE TUTTI FRUTTI Never before has there been a Lupin with as high a quality flower spike. Tutti Frutti has been bred for its many large, top quality flower spikes on each plant This mixture is sure to add height, character and interest to the borders in your garden. Ideal for cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, or cut flower garden. Flowers in June and July, likes Full sun, sun or part shade.

3 DIANTHUS BRILLIANT Fragrant, colorful flowers cover these bushy perennials from spring to summer. Pinks have compact, uniform habits and produce dense clusters of small flowers. Maiden Pins are easycare perennials, ideal for the beginning gardener. Plants form a low, spreading evergreen mound of dark-green leaves, studded with bright cherry-red flowers in late spring, then on and off throughout the summer. Trim back lightly after first flowering. Good choice for poor soils, and hot, sunny sites. Also excellent in tubs and mixed containers. VERBASCUM SOUTHERN CHARM -Zone: 5 to 8, Height: 2 to 3 ft., Width 1.5 to 2 ft. Blooms in May to June, Pastel shades of lavender, buff, cream and rose. Likes full sun. Water: Dry to medium, Low Maintenance, Showy, can Tolerate: Deer and Drought. Easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Tolerates a wide range of soil conditions including poor dry soils, but must have good drainage. This plant is a short-lived perennial (typically 2-3 years). Remove spent flower spikes to maintain plant appearance and to encourage additional bloom. However, some flower spikes should be left to facilitate self-seeding or for seed collection. 'Southern Charm' is a hybrid seed strain that is easily grown from seed, often blooming the first year, and will selfseed in the garden. Also may be propagated by root cuttings in early spring. VEGETABLES 6 $3.25 each BROCCOLI (gypsy) Midearly large heavy head with med-fine beads. 53 days. Produces side shoots till freezing. SLICING CUCUMBER (Straight 8) Like full sun, consistent watering. Each plant produces 5-6 medium to large peppers which turn bright red when ripened. This variety is disease resistant. BRUSSEL SPROUTS - (Long Island) 110 days to harvest, so plant them early. Brussel sprouts bear their dark green buds on tall stalks. They like cool weather and the flavor is better in the fall after a light frost. TOMATO (Amish Paste) Plants produces high yields of tomatoes. Great for sauces and sliced in salads and sandwiches. Full sun, water consistently when dry spells occur. Quick Notes from Claudia Hitt, Horticulturist PERENNIAL a perennial plant is one that will survive the winter and grow every year from the same root. Usually perennials need to be divided after a few years of growing in the same place. ANNUALS annuals are showy, colorful plants that will not survive a frost. They add color to a garden and are often used in beds, borders, and containers. BIENNIAL is a plant that requires two growing seasons to complete its life cycle (flowers the 2nd year). INVASIVE a plant that will invade the space around it and become a nuisance trying to control. It can become worse than a weed. Plant invasive herbs and flowers in places where it is okay for them to spread and you will like it so you do not have to continually fight off aggressive growth.

4 HERBS 6 $3.25 each BASIL (regular) Has been called the king of herbs. It is an annual that needs full sun, rich welldrained soil and protection from cold winds. It is classified a warming and moistening herb. It is a fragrant and gentle herb that can be brewed as a tea and is used abundantly in cooking. It is a good companion plant for tomatoes, helping them to grow strong and healthy, better able to ward off insects and disease. PARSLEY (plain) Garden parsley is a bright green, biennial, plant in temperate climates like ours. As a biennial, during the first year, it forms a rosette of tripinnate or fernlike leaves. In the second year, it grows a flowering stem to 75 cm tall with sparser leaves and flat-topped 3 10 cm diameter umbrella shaped blossoms with numerous 2 mm diameter yellow to yellowish-green flowers. Parsley is good in just about everything. Easily dried in the oven. SAGE The Native Americans used sage to cleanse the air and as an incense for ceremonies. Greeks believed sage was a cureall. Early herbalists used sage to soothe the nerves, cure toothache, improve digestion, quiet tremors, relieve itching, and as an antidote for venom or poisoning. Modern herbalists use sage to treat head colds, sore throat, headaches and digestion. Sage is popular for culinary herb. It s good on poultry, vegetables, fish, and eggs. A shrubby perennial that needs to be replanted every 3-4 years, likes full sun and good drainage. STEVIA is an alternative to sugar. Although Stevia is not considered an easy herb to grow, it has proved to be quite adaptable and capable of being cultivated in climate zones. If you haven't grown this herb before, it does well in well containers. It can be used as aground powder or liquid in baking or desserts. It is an annual that likes full sun but not hot weather. It s best to plant your Stevia in rows apart, leaving 18 between plants. Plants should grow to a height of about 30 - a width of CILANTRO 6-pk - The most important thing to remember when growing cilantro is that it does not like hot weather. Cilantro growing in soil that reaches 75F will bolt and go to seed. This means that the ideal cilantro growing conditions are cool, but sunny. You should be growing cilantro where it will get early morning or late afternoon sun, but be shaded during the hottest part of the day. ROSEMARY Is a woody, perennial herb with fragrant evergreen needle-like leaves. It can be grown in the garden all summer, but cannot withstand winter. An easy way to keep Rosemary is in a pot in a morning sunny area, in a place near water as container plants need watering often in summer. Bring pot indoors in fall for fresh rosemary all winter. Keep in a sunny window over winter and take back out in the Spring after danger of frost has passed.
