4 INTRODUCTION Cynema Soundfield delivers both unobtrusive appearance and high performance. We created the new term Cynema Soundfield to describe the system because it is more than just a soundbar or a collection of independent speakers. Much more versatile than a traditional soundbar, speakers can be placed in a variety of configurations to optimize audio performance. Aesthetically, the Cynema Soundfield's virtually flat appearance complements the latest flat panel displays perfectly. Its unique in-wall mounting system dramatically improves the ease of installation and contributes to dynamic audio reproduction. Thin flat panel televisions must use thin speakers. Thin speakers fall short of our standards for high fidelity. Niles Cynema Soundfield is the solution that brings the aspects people appreciate most about flat panel TVs, unobtrusive appearance and high performance, to the world of installed audio products. : ~~~~).1 """"'""' I ~~~ ; CSF-~5 J

13 CYNEMA SOUNDFIELDT~ SOUNDBAR SYSTEMS INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS CONTINUED... IN-WALL MOUNTING SYSTEM The Cynema Soundfield In-Wall Mounting System includes two rails that are connected together using up to four Screw Down Slide Brackets as shown in Figure 2 on page 11. There will be installations where the right and left end of the rails do not fall directly on a stud. Two Clamp Down End Brackets are included to secure rail ends that fall 3 or more inches from the nearest Screw Down Sliding Bracket by clamping the drywall as shown in Figure 2 on page 11. SPECIAL INSTALLATION NOTE: In some installations the ends of the top and bottom rails will fall too close to the side of a stud to provide the Clamp Down End Bracket with enough drywall for clamping and, at the same time, not fall close enough to the stud to use the Screw Down Sliding Bracket (Figure 5, A.). When this occurs, attach a wood furring strip flush on the side of that stud (Figure 5, B.) and use the Screw Down Slide Brackets screwed into these furring strips to secure the ends of the rails (Figure 5, C.). 14 INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS CONTINUED... IN-WALL POWER SUPPLY BOX (POWERED MODELS ONLY) All Powered Cynema Soundfield models (CSF48A, CSF55A and CSF65A) include one In-Wall Power Supply Box. The In-Wall Power Supply Box incorporates the Amplifier Module power supply in a flush mounted electrical box. It includes a removable AC power cord on the front face plate, outside the wall, that plugs into a standard AC wall outlet. A 24V DC cable on the rear side, inside the wall, connects to the Amplifier Module that installs in the In-Wall Mounting System with the Speaker Modules. The In-Wall Power Supply Box is installed below or directly behind a wall mounted TV next to an AC outlet (Figure 6 A, B). Figure 6: In-Wall Power Supply Box J loy I~ A: Located Below the TV B: Located Behind the TV IMPORTANT INSTALLTION NOTE: Because the 24V DC cable provided is limited in length and cannot be spliced or extended, you must locate the In-Wall Power Supply Box as close as possible to the Amplifier Module. In some municipalities, conduit is required. For a trouble-free installation, low voltage wire must be in accordance with the National Electrical Code and any applicable provisions of the local building code. If you ore unsure of the correct installation techniques, wire jacket, or type of conduit to use, consult a professional audio/video installer, building contractor, or the local building and inspection department

15 CYNEMA SOUNDFIELD SOUNDBAR SYSTEMS INSTALLING THE SYSTEM Niles Cynema Soundfield Speaker Systems are designed for installation in existing walls built using standard construction (drywall attached to wood studs spaced 16" on center). NOTE: Walls constructed with studs that are not accurately spaced 16" on center may prevent proper installation of the three Speaker Modules and the Amplifier Module. Install the included In-Wall Mounting System below and centered with a wall mounted Flat Panel TV. Wall cutout templates are supplied to mark the drywall and cut the proper size rectangular holes which accommodate the Cynema Soundfield In-Wall Mounting System and In-Wall Power Supply Box. Use the outside dimensions of the included Speaker Grille to determine the final location of the Cynema Soundfield Speaker System (see Page 11 Figure 2 for dimensions). The design of the magnetically attached Speaker Grill provides plus or minus 1" of left and right fine position adjustment after it is attached to the In-Wall Mounting System for precise center alignment with the TV. NOTE: Create o rough sketch that diagrams the exact position of the wall studs, TV and proposed speaker location to identify any unforeseen installation issues before cutting the drywall (see Page 12 Figure 3 & 4 ). CUT THE DRY WALL OPENING FOR THE IN-WALL MOUNTING SYSTEM (ALL MODELS) 1. Locate all of the studs in the wall below the lv location using a stud sensor or by hand-knocking. 2. Drill a 1/8" pilot hole just barely through the wallboard or dry wall (1/2" to 5/8" deep in most homes) in the vertical center of your proposed speaker location and the horizontal center of each stud bay the mounting system will cover. NOTE: BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO DRILL THROUGH EXISTING WIRES, PIPES, OR STRUCTURE. IF YOU FEEL ANY EXTRA RESISTANCE AS YOU ARE DRILLING, STOP. 3. Cut a piece of coat hanger equal to the width of the stud bays. Bend the wire in half creating a right angle. Poke the "L shaped" wire into the pilot hole and turn it in a complete circle. If it turns freely in all directions, repeat the procedure for each stud bay of your proposed speaker location (See below). If the coat hanger wire movement is obstructed by a pipe or cable, fill the hole(s) with spackle or other patching compound and consider a different location. 4. Once you have determined the correct position for the speaker grille, center the supplied In-Wall Mounting System cutout template vertically and horizontally with the proposed grill location. Tape it to the wall surface making sure it is level with the lv and trace it using a pencil. Drill the four corners of the trace with a 1 /4" drill bit. 5.1f you are cutting a painted or wall papered drywall, use a sheetrock or keyhole saw. NOTE: BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO SAW THROUGH EXISTING WIRES, PIPES, OR STRUCTURE. IF YOU FEEL ANY EXTRA RESISTANCE AS YOU ARE CUTTING, STOP. NILES AUDIO CORPORATION BUY-HIFI

16 INSTALLING THE SYSTEM CONTINUED... INSTALL THE IN-WALL POWER SUPPLY BOX (POWERED MODELS ONLY) 1. 28 OPERATION POWERED SYSTEMS POWERED CYNEMA SOUNDFIELD SYSTEMS The Amplifier Module included with Powered Cynema Soundfield Systems amplifies the sound for the Speaker Modules. Signal activation and priority input switching automatically turn the Amplifier Module on and select a prioritized input for simple operation. Push buttons provide manual control from the front panel and a built in infrared receiver provides control from a learning IR remote control or the remote control included with the Flat Panel TV. LED INDICATORS LED indicators located on the Amplifier Module's front panel are included to provide useful real time operational feedback (see Figure 21). The LED indicators illuminate only when the Amplifier Module signal activates or when it automatically switches input. In addition, using an IR remote control or the front panel buttons will cause the LED indicators to illuminate. NOTE: All of the LED indicators turn completely off after three seconds of operational inactivity to prevent distraction while viewing TV. Figure 21: LED Indicator Descriptions NAME DESCRIPTION A solid green Power LED indicates the Amplifier Module is "ON". A solid red Power LED indicates the Amplifier Module is "OFF". Power LED A flashing red Power LED indicates the amplifier is in a fault condition and the protection circuit has activated. A rapidly blinking green Power LED indicates a valid IR command is being received by the built in IR receiver. A solid green Status LED indicates that Wide Audio Mode is off. Status LED A solid red Status LED indicates that Wide Audio Mode is On. See page 30, Figure 23 for more details regarding Wide Audio Mode. A solid green Source LED indicates the optical I HDMI source input is active and selected. Source LED A solid red Source LED indicates the analog AUXIn source is active and selected. A solid orange Source LED indicates the analog Line In source is selected

29 CYNEMA SOUNDFIELDTM SOUNDBAR SYSTEMS OPERATION POWERED SYSTEMS CONTINUED... AUTOMATIC CONTROL Automatic System Activation The Amplifier Module automatically powers on when an audio signal is present at the Optical, HOM I, Line or Aux inputs. The Amplifier Module subsequently powers off in the absence of an audio signal at all inputs after 3 minutes. Automatic System Input Selection The Amplifier Module automatically selects a source when an audio signal becomes present at the input connections. In the event audio is present at both the Video (Optical, HDMI, or Line) and Aux Inputs simultaneously, automatic priority input selection is given to the Video Input. NOTE: When a source is connected to the line or oux input, the muting of that source may result in the automatic system input selection feature searching for the next active input before sound is restored. Automatic Sound Mode Selection The Amplifier Module automatically selects the appropriate surround sound mode for the currently selected input as shown in Figure 22 below. NAME DESCRIPTION Optical/HOM I Dolby Digital Line Dolby Pro Logic Aux Music Mode Figure 22: Surround Sound Modes MANUAL CONTROL Power Button The Power Button toggles the Amplifier Module on and off. NOTE: The Amplifier Module will also always turn on when on active input signal is detected. Source Selection Button The Source Button provides sequential selection of the Video Input (Opticai/HDMI/Line) or the Aux Input. Manual selection of input using the Source Buttons overrides the Amplifier Module's automatic input selection. Volume Up/Down Buttons The Volume Up/Down Buttons control the Main Volume Up and Down. Mute Button The Mute Button mutes or unmutes the Main Volume. Left/Center/Right Level Buttons The Left/Center/Right Level Buttons balance the individual level of each speaker module to compensate for asymmetrical speaker placement in the In-Wall Mounting System. IR Input Contact Configuration: Tip = IR signal; Ring = Ground for power and IR signal; Sleeve = 12V to power an IR receiver. Important Note: You must use o three conductor mini-plug (Tip/Ring/Sleeve) and connect only the Tip and Ring if you ore connecting the IR control output of on RF to IR bose station or AV control system rather than connecting on IR receiver. The use of a two conductor mini-plug (Tip/Sleeve) in this instance will short 12V to Ground and may cause damage to the Amplifier Module

31 CYNEMA SOUNDFIELD SOUNDBAR SYSTEMS OPERATION POWERED SYSTEMS CONTINUED... LEARNING INFRARED COMMANDS In addition to the infrared control available from the remote control commands in Figure 23, the Amplifier Module can learn the power, volume and mute command from any infrared remote control for control from one hand held remote. Steps for learning Infrared commands into the Amplifier Module 1. Press the Power button and Volume+ (Vol+) button simultaneously until the Power LED blinks orange. 2. The Power, Vol+, Vol-, and Mute functions can be learned by the Cynema Soundfield Amplifier Module. As an example, let's start with the Vol+ command. Press the Vol+ button on the Amplifier Module. The Power LED will light constant orange. 3. Aim the TV remote at the Amplifier Module's built in IR receiver from about 1 ft (30 em) and press the corresponding Vol+ button 4 times until the Power LED lights green. This indicates that the Amplifier Module has learned the command. 4. Repeat steps 1 to 4 to teach commands to the remaining functions. Note for cable/satellite users: If you plan to use the universal remote supplied with your cable/satellite box to operate your Cynema Soundfield System, that universal remote itself may not be able to properly program the Cynema Soundfield System. Instead, use the original remote control supplied with the television: Following programming with the television's remote, the Cynema Soundfield System will respond appropriately to the cable/satellite box universal remote. OPERATION PASSIVE SYSTEMS PASSIVE CYNEMA SOUNDFIELD SYSTEMS Refer to the operating instructions of the AV receiver connected to the Speaker Modules when using a passive Cynema Soundfield System.
