This certainly proved true in a recent kitchen renovation. When this family invited me to help them transform their kitchen, they faced a major problem: no storage. The first thing we did to increase their storage was to create as much closed storage as possible within the kitchen. This included moving the coffee maker, toaster and blender from the counter to a closed door glossy cabinet to keep the visual clutter minimal. Where possible, we installed pull out drawers to capitalize on the counters depth and to keep items like spices and bottles organized. While exposed shelving allows an area for displaying items, in smaller spaces closed storage is simply more practical and paramount. For the doors, we chose a flat front profile with streamlined cabinet pulls to continue this clean, clutter-free look. The homeowners allowed me to play with colour to achieve a modern, youthful aesthetic. High gloss white cabinets and quartz counter tops are contrasted with dark grey high gloss lower cabinets. As a fun unexpected punch of colour, we painted the wall a vibrant Kelly Green that was again echoed in the light fixtures and kitchen accessories. The colour scheme was continued throughout the entire open concept living area and mimicked in a custom entertainment unit. In a small space, where everything can be seen at a glance, utilizing a unified colour scheme is a sure way to achieve a harmonious environment and visually make a space feel larger. Moreover, we made the space feel bigger by ensuring that each cabinet was organized. In the entertainment unit, specific compartments were created to house wine bottles and glassware. Large compartments were organized for toys, games and books. Cookbooks had a designated spot in the entertainment unit for easy access, and drawers were fitted with interior dividers to ensure clutter was kept under control. Grouping similar items, and assigning designated homes to these items is a strategic way to increase your living space. As the homeowners were a fashion forward couple, I wanted to ensure there were some stylish elements involved in the renovation. To match their existing stainless steel appliance suite, I selected a sink with a geometric silhouette and a complementing modern faucet. Bar stools with polished chrome legs added some sparkle along with delicate glass pendant light fixtures. A glass back splash provided subtle texture and dimension without being overwhelming. At the end of the renovation, the homeowners had much needed extra storage, found a home for the toys, books and games that come with raising a small child, and created a sophisticated, yet family friendly kitchen for entertaining. at a glance USE CLOSED CABINTERY In a small space keep in mind visual clutter - closed cabinetry keeps clutter out of sight and can make a space feel larger. ORGANIZE THE INSIDE You d be surprised at how much space you can gain by organizing drawer interiors and eliminating items that are no longer used. KEEP A COHESIVE COLOUR PALETTE In a small space where the entire unit can sometimes be seen at a glance, utilizing a cohesive colour palette can help make your space look more harmonious BE BOLD WITH COLOUR Living small doesn t mean living boring. A punch of an intense colour can invigorate a space when used in conjunction with more muted hues. SPARKLE AND SHINE Reflective surfaces are a great asset in a small space. The reflection of light and dimension in a back splash or light fixture can make a small space appear larger.
