16 Case Study BankSA Head Office Adelaide, South Australia Westpac Group Project value: $15M Completed: July 2016 This project encompasses a 9-storey, commercial office refurbishment for the BankSA Head Office in the Adelaide CBD. Working closely with Project Managers, Cushman and Wakefield, the works were carefully planned upfront, rigorously assessed for outcomes during documentation, and cleverly staged with redundant spaces being used as decanting space for staff relocations. As the building held a State Heritage listing, the project required extensive consultation with State Heritage, the Adelaide City Council and other specialist advisers in order to obtain approvals to preserve key heritage features throughout the building. The project also included a Disability Discrimination Act compliance review. We undertook detailed consultation with services engineers and costs consultants in order to assist the client in prioritising each of these project works. Through new internal finishes including carpets, painting, workstation screens, blinds and graphics we had an opportunity to freshen the interior of the existing Heritage building with a clear new palette that would open up the closed in feeling of the floors and provide a contemporary space for the staff. We placed special emphasis on creating an arrival experience entry foyer for each floor. Through the use of large scale graphics, a fresh colour scheme, modern furniture pieces and internal directory signage we activated these entrance spaces, while creating a cohesive design standard throughout each of the floors, which could be adapted to suit the user group on the respective levels throughout the building. Our scope of works also extended to an upgrade to staff facilities, including a

17 gymnasium and squash court on the top floor, and the refurbishment of the existing Executive Offices on Level 8 to reflect a more contemporary corporate identity. This area, in particular, required a higher standard of fixtures for corporate level accommodation, including high end fittings, furnishings and finishes and careful consideration to construction detailing in order to maximise natural light and the existing heritage features. All stages of the project have been delivered on time and budget and our ongoing and extensive consultation with the client and main user group throughout the project have ensured an overall client focus and positive project outcome. New finishes provided a fresh, bright and contemporary working environment.

18 Case Study Royal Hobart Hospital Cancer Services Hobart, Tasmania Department of Health and Human Services Project value: $27.5M Completed: Dec 2012 Upgrade and extension works at the RHH for the new Integrated Cancer Centre were carried out in conjunction with Silver Thomas Hanley, our Interior Designer was tasked with creating a fresh exterior façade for the new linear accelerator bunker and designing a set of interior finishes that could be rolled out onto multiple levels. Due to the nature of its construction, the bunker is not provided with any external outlook, as this compromises the radiation protection principles. In order to overcome this and create a calming, comfortable and healing environment within the bunker, we incorporated the principles of biophilia - human nature s instinctive bond with the natural world. The philosophy of nature healing is based on the idea that materials evocative of natural surroundings increase feelings of wellness in the end users, and was incorporated into the design plan for both the façade and the interiors. The bunker s new façade integrates the old and new areas of the hospital, wrapping around the new ICC extension from Liverpool to Campbell Street. The façade is a soothing combination of concrete, pale green porcelain tiling and glass in a shade of turquoise that echoes the colours in the older exterior sections of the hospital. This façade presents a bespoke design of pixelated trees, a pattern of dots inspired by the garden at the Railway Roundabout upon approach to the Royal Hobart Hospital, which flow up the concrete and glass exterior. This story of dots is repeated through the interior to form a cohesive design which can be seen on seating fabric, carpets and in the diffused, natural light that streams through the patterned exterior glass. The interiors were carefully designed to incorporate practical products, using natural elements wherever possible, but paramount

19 to this was the need for all materials to meet the hospitals stringent requirements of infection control, health care regulations and building standards. A combination of a natural, timber-look vinyl and a soft green carpet with charcoal spots evoking a feeling of moss and stones on a rivers edge, further enhances the connection to the natural world. Timber frames housing resin panels are also placed throughout the levels, set with natural elements such as grasses and leaves. These dividing screens help to define internal spaces without enclosing them. materials evocative of natural surroundings increase feelings of wellness Newly Refurbished Day Oncology and Level 9 Oncology Ward The levels encompassed within the Cancer Services unit include the Day Oncology/Chemothrapy Unit, which was refurbished as part of the main Cancer Services project. More recently, the Oncology Ward has been refurbished and uses the same design set, but with a variation on colour themes - some floors feature a calming green colour palette, whilst others reflect a warm and comforting orange scheme. Corian, a versatile solid surface, was used to create each level s reception desks, forming a flowing architectural design, which is durable and easy to clean and maintain. This bright, white hub acts as a beacon for patients and visitors, set against the timber-look floors. In creating the signage and wayfinding for these levels, a neutral look was designed that could be effectively used throughout the hospital. This calming, holistic approach to both healing and design has received an overwhelmingly positive response from users and staff, alike.
