2 maidelle 205' ICON YACHTS Maidelle is a boat of reflections. Literally. Her interior features high-gloss joinery, mirrors and lighting designed to enhance glint. She also reflects the individual tastes of her owner, a factor that has made each of the three boats in ICON Yachts 205-foot series quite different. But at the most basic level, this yacht s platform mirrors those of her series predecessors, 2010 launches Icon and Baton Rouge. The platform was developed by Jen Wartena and Wim Koersvelt, who founded ICON Yachts in ICON developed the engineering package and hull design, and the general arrangement with a fixed central staircase placement and bridge position was a collaboration between ICON and Redman Whiteley Dixon (RWD). Up to the main deck, they are ninety percent the same, says Wartena. But upwards of that, the steel-and-aluminum boats diverge. Most different is Baton Rouge, where Tim Heywood created a volume-maximizing superstructure and significantly expanded the exterior decks. It is much easier to see the family resemblance between Icon and Maidelle, both styled by RWD to have a crisp, contemporary finish. Really, the only difference came in the paint, says Douglas Hynd, who managed the Maidelle project for RWD. Icon s got a dark graphite hull with a white superstructure and big black bands around the windows, whereas they wanted a much simpler all-white finish for Maidelle. To set off the white body, Maidelle s interior designer, Cristiano Gatto, gave her green tinted windows, which the main-deck veranda (right page, bottom) melds interior comfort with an outdoors feeling. the dining salon (below) embodies formal glamour with highgloss woods and lightreflecting upholstery on the dining chairs. do not affect the color of light coming in or tint the scenery when looking out. Inside, Gatto tweaked the layout to provide the entertaining areas and family privacy the owner desired. He employed a glamorous Art Deco style with oriental influences. Within this he created three moods, corresponding to different spaces. In the main salon and guest areas we used dark woods and marble to make them more formal, although still cozy, he says. This mood shows in the four lower-deck guest cabins featuring high-gloss mahogany and rosewood veneers with dark walnut surrounds. The headboards, several wall elements and overheads are padded with ivory leather, and at the foot of the double beds is a cabinet with a pop-up TV. Throughout the boat, automated ivory blackout screens and ivory leather blinds are operated using an iphone or ipad app, which also controls lighting and televisions. Conveniently, a central passageway leads guests aft from the guest cabins to the beach club. Upstairs on the main deck the formal glamour is most apparent. The lobby is floored with an immense slab of portoro marble black shot with white and gold streaks that took two years to find. To magnify this effect we put a series of mirrors on the ceiling, says Gatto, while light filters subtly into the space through a shoji screen. Aft, the dining salon is a breathtaking space. The centerpiece is a 14-person rosewood dining table with stainless steel and parchment covered legs. The central section can be removed to create two smaller tables, and, like all furniture on board except the sofas, it is custom made. Above the table is an undulating 23-foot chandelier by the artists of Murano glass firm Venini and next to it, a frosted- You need to have a place where you can have more warmth and not be completely outside. I m from Venice, so I have a passion for lights and glass, says Gatto. Farther aft lies one of Maidelle s special features, an enclosed veranda that Gatto created by taking some space from the aft deck and salon. It features lots of comfortable seating in blue and ivory as well as teak decking, making it seem more part of the exterior than the interior. Sliding doors separate it from the salon and curved doors from the aft deck. Bow windows are used in architecture, especially in the north, because you need to have light and an outdoor effect, but you need to be protected from the weather, says Gatto, and we have the same condition on a boat in spring or autumn in the Med; you need to have a place where you can have more warmth and not be completely outside. In summer it s a nice stop between the outside and the formal salon. There is a television on each side of the space, covered by paintings when not in use. During the Grand Prix in Monte Carlo you can look out when the car moves past, but the rest of the time you can see perfectly what s going on in the race on a screen near to you, says Gatto. The second mood applies to the owners private spaces, which Gatto made warmer and cozier. The owners suite is split-level, accessed via a private corridor leading forward from the main-deck lobby. This opens into a full-beam space with a large bed to port facing a wall-mounted television, and to starboard, ivory seating makes the most of natural daylight. Forward is a his-and-hers en suite clad in a tactile honeycolored Timber Silk stone. A stairway leads from the private corridor up to the master s observation lounge featuring fantastic views and comfortable seating, as well as a bar, a cabinet with pop-up television and a desk. Forward of this, the useable area of the forward deck has been enlarged to offer a private exterior space with seating and sunpads. The width, natural light and multi-purpose nature of the suite as a whole give it a warm family feeling. This mood is enhanced by Gatto s choice of ebony and Canaletto walnut, which are warmer than the mahogany and rosewood used in other areas and by the way that the décor subtly divides the space into smaller, more intimate areas. This theme continues in the VIP aft of the suite s observation lounge, which has a similar layout to the lower deck guest cabins but with wider windows and the warmer woods used in the owner s cabin. Farther aft, in the upper salon, the space is also divided into intimate arrangements so some guests can enjoy a cinema experience while others chat. The forward wall is covered in panels of golden goatskin parchment that adds to the warmth of the woods used in this space. On the aft deck is fixed seating and a dining table for 12. Indeed, Maidelle s exterior decks are all intelligently arranged. The bridge aft deck features a spa pool and sunpads from which guests can enjoy the views, and the top deck is an intimate and simple space with a round of sunpads. The most impressive outdoor space, though, is the beach club, a feature ICON excels at. The basic design is identical to that of Icon, but where Icon has a bar and lots of seating, the space on Maidelle is relatively clear so it can be used to stow water toys. To port is a gym with a multi-purpose Kinesis machine from TechnoGym (which offers anaerobic exercise without the boat having to carry weights) and a treadmill. To starboard is a storeroom, plus shower and dayhead, which along with the gym have been decked out in durable, easy-to-clean flooring. The beach club s main space shows Gatto s third mood with teak decks and pale brushed natural teak paneling that evoke a beach atmosphere. We were trying to create a bit of the exterior mood more fresh, relaxed, says Gatto. The generously proportioned captain and first officer s cabins aft of the wheelhouse have a similar pale, matte, open-grain teak. The other crew areas were part of the original Icon platform. We did the space planning and also the furniture design, says RWD s Hynd. The idea was that we d develop with ICON a standard set of five color schemes for the crew i.e. this is the design, but you can have it in dark timber, light timber or something in between. Same with the galley you could vary the cabinet and flooring colors. Gatto chose a blonde maple wood, which accentuates the generous size of the crew lounge and galley. The service corridors are wide, there s good access to each deck and there s even an extra crew head so that dayworkers don t have to use the crew s en suites. A lot of what we did with the crew areas was with the idea of longevity, says Hynd. We didn t know when we started about the new MCA [LY3] regulations, but it won t be difficult to implement them on that package. It was certainly the philosophy of ICON that they wanted crew accommodation that was as proper as the Dutch builders they re competing against. The same can be said of Maidelle s engine room. It s spacious and neatly wired, with labeled pipes and safety rails around the two MTU 12V 4000 M71 engines, which offer 2,480 horsepower each and a range of 6,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. The engineer has a good-sized office with a monitoring screen, which is repeated on the bridge. But perhaps the most interesting thing about the engine room is how it was built. There s an enormous number of complex technical systems on board a yacht, and they are all integrated into a very small area, says ICON s Wartena, who has worked in shipbuilding and at Feadship. The most inefficient place of work is on board a boat because you need to bring all these specialists into that small area. the guest cabin corridor leads straight to the beach club, which includes a gym (below and right page, bottom). the basic layout is the same as Icon s, although Maidelle s has been kept relatively clear so it can be used to store and launch watertoys. two 23-foot-plus tenders are stowed under the foredeck. ICON, therefore, builds many of its yacht installations in workshops with good light and good cranes, using the best tradespeople, who are attracted by the better working conditions. It makes the build more efficient and faster. Eighty percent of the hours spent for an engine room installation are not spent on board, Wartena says. The results please Maidelle s Captain Donald Heath. You can see that ICON went into yacht building to compete with Feadship and Amels, he says. The engineering and finish in the technical spaces is very good. The equipment in the wheelhouse is standard, good stuff from reputable makers. Indeed, while Maidelle is a series boat, she is anything but standard. The attention to detail in the platform and décor and the execution of both is extraordinary. On the technical side, a good example is the cooler systems for the freezers. As Jan Mark Molenaar, ICON project manager for Maidelle, notes, The units have not been placed with the freezers, but in the engine room to reduce noise. On the decorative side, the LED lighting system is notable. We have designed the spotlight bulbs to have a warmer effect and larger spectrum of light than normal, to make the rich wood more alive, says Gatto. Throughout the boat, the floor spots are reflected in the dark, high-gloss wood of doors so that corridors seem to stretch onwards. The ICON team is very proud of the yacht. Reflections are only worthwhile if they make more of something already beautiful. Maidelle certainly mirrors a fine platform, but she also wears a gloss that s all her own.
