3 4 EJ Papers #02 Spring 2010 Celebrating Creativity... 5 New Showroom Erik Jørgensen has set up a 500m 2 showroom at the Copenhagen harbour Visit the showroom Pakhus 48 Klubiensvej København Ø Denmark T: Opening hours mon-fri 9am-4pm The new showroom is housed in Pakhus 48, an old warehouse, which is within a stone s throw of the water s edge. The surroundings are absolutely ideal.there is air, light and space, and at the same time the area is steeped in the history and dynamism of Copenhagen Harbour. The building used to be a warehouse and is therefore roomy and stark, qualities that have been retained during the renovation. Erik Jørgensen opened the new showroom with an exhibition of a range of furniture in colours characterised by an underwater theme: shades of green, blue and orange, the likes of which can be found in Denmark s surrounding waters seas such as the Kattegat. Niels Jørgensen, managing director of Erik Jørgensen, says that the emphasis of the exhibition is on innovative new design as well as on good old classics, because in the present crisis people focus on quality and therefore like to buy furniture that exudes vintage. The exhibition has been organised by furniture designer Tine Mouritsen. She has been Erik Jørgensen s permanent exhibition architect for a number of years. Tine has also designed the new Qo2 chair/ sofa for Erik Jørgensen, which features in the exhibition and can been seen in the supplement to this paper. Tine Mouritsen (b. 1974) trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art and Architecture, graduating in In 2003 she received the Erik Jørgensen Design Award together with Mia Sinding for the Scala conference furniture, which went into production in 2006.

The Eyes chair is in unaccustomed surroundings but survives the encounter with the powerful circus elephant. On a hot summer s day at Circus Benneweis A number of Erik Jørgensen s products were looked at afresh and from surprising new angles when they appeared in an unusual setting at Circus Benneweis, a well-known Danish circus. With its fascinating environment, a circus is a very different stage to that normally used to present Erik Jørgensen s furniture. The furniture enters into a dialogue with elephants, strongmen and circus artistes, giving it an edge and a new dimension and triggering unfamiliar emotional responses in the onlooker.

5 8 EJ Papers #02 Spring 2010 Celebrating Creativity... 9 lean & local Erik Jørgensen produces sustainable furniture that lasts a lifetime In the making Every one of Erik Jørgensen s employees has an important role to fulfil before a piece of furniture arrives at the customer s. Oxchair, with its beautiful, complicated design, is challenging to manufacture few upholsterers have the required skills. Craftsmanship and a regard for the material are key concepts at the furniture factory in Svendborg. Erik Jørgensen employs some of Denmark s best furniture upholsterers and is one of the few manufacturers to have kept production at home. That way we can be sure that we get the quality that is vital for our customers and furniture that is exactly how we and our designers intended it, says Niels Jørgensen, managing director. On this page, among other items, we show Oxchair being manufactured. Few upholsterers master the process involved in producing this complicated chair, which remains one of the factory s most popular pieces of furniture. It takes a furniture upholsterer a whole working day to upholster the inner shell of Oxchair, which consists of a wooden frame made by skilled joiners.

6 10 EJ Papers #02 Spring 2010 Celebrating Creativity Oxchair 50 years Oxchair was launched in 1960, and after a break in production is now back as one of the flagships of Danish design. This year, in 2010, Erik Jørgensen celebrates Oxchair s 50th anniversary. Oxchair was designed by Hans J. Wegner, and along with several other designs that enjoy classic status today, Oxchair was ahead of its time when it was presented in Wegner s construction was too technically advanced for furniture producers of the day to master, so the chair was taken out of production. Then the design was shelved for a number of years, but in 1989 Erik Jørgensen was contacted by Wegner, who hoped to resurrect Oxchair. Together, Wegner and Erik Jørgensen changed the upholstery from African curled hair to cold-cured foam, resulting in added comfort and a much longer lifespan. They kept faith, however, with the elegant internal wooden construction. Today, Oxchair is a sculptural manifestation of the very best in Danish furniture design an organic, fully-upholstered piece of furniture that seems to be formed from a single block. The extended back draws on references to living creatures and lends Oxchair bull-like masculinity and suppleness. This, combined with the elegant steel frame and soft surfaces, gives the chair a surprising, ultra-modern appearance. The shape of the chair is a visual challenge, but ergonomically Oxchair treats your body to an immediate, sensual experience. Wegner has said that Oxchair was his favourite chair. The picture above shows him sitting in it. As can be seen from the way Wegner sits, the chair encourages you to turn sideways, but Oxchair provides support and allows you to rest whichever way you sit. The construction of Oxchair is so technically advanced that it takes several years to train a craftsman in the anatomy of the chair. It is produced by highly trained specialists and for that reason there is several months delivery time. The manufacturing process entails a large amount of upholstery work with all surfaces being mounted and fastened independently without stitching. The anniversary will be celebrated with an Oxchair campaign featuring special versions of the classic chair. See more at or at your nearest distributor. A new sofa range inspired by nature and simple organic shapes Last year, Erik Jørgensen introduced the In Duplo sofa series. What is being proposed is a sofa that breaks with established ways and the rectangular tradition, but has a spontaneity and weightlessness of design that makes it easy to use when furnishing a room and that will fit into most settings. In Duplo is organic in style, with nature, simplicity and beauty being the inspiration for the design. In Duplo comes in two models high and low. In Duplo Low (pictured) is a sofa with a low back and a wide, horizontal look. A fully-upholstered frame with loose back cushions, and an extra cushion that can be placed anywhere on the seat and which serves as arm or neck support, depending on whether you are sitting or lying down. In Duplo Low can also be used as a guest bed if you remove the loose back cushions. In the high model, In Duplo High, the sofa has a straight back and a slightly screen-like appearance. Like the low model, it has a fully-upholstered frame with a loose seat cushion and loose lumbar cushions, making it possible to work with different colour and pattern combinations. The sofas with the beautiful lines were designed by Anne-Mette Bartholin Jensen and Morten Ernst. The series also includes a pouf and the Insula tables shown in the supplement to the paper.

The design used for the Qo2 chair is rooted in the Design-for-life and Designfor-recycling philosophies. The prerequisites are high functional quality and durability as well as ease of dismantling. Sustainability was therefore an important consideration for the designer Tine Mouritsen, who created the Qo2 chair. It s important for us to be able to offer our customers enduring quality, more or less in accordance with the cradleto-grave principle. That s why it s so satisfying when we manage to combine sturdy designs in wood with upholstery craftsmanship in an innovative process that helps to save global resources, says Niels Jørgensen, managing director. Another piece of furniture from Erik Jørgensen, which the delegates could sit or lie on, was the new EJ 320 Spring sofa. The Bella Center chose the sofa because of its high level of comfort and because the materials used are pure, natural products. The EJ 320 Spring sofa is built from modules that can be combined in many different ways. This is an advantage in the dissimilar rooms and long corridors of the Bella Center. As far as is known, the delegates were happy with the comfortable furniture, and there was a heavy demand for places to rest at the now departed COP15 summit. Would Obama, Netanyahu or Hu Jintao choose the same chair during negotiations at the COP15 climate summit? Could the chair be a sandpit? Two chairs tied together with a piece of fabric? The 2009 Cabinetmakers Autumn Exhibition discussed the question, made topical by the climate summit taking place at the same time a summit that required openness, determination and cooperation. Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, the art museum of international stature in the centre of Copenhagen, provided the venue for the exhibition, which featured 35 completely new chairs, specially created for the exhibition. Erik Jørgensen contributed with the chair Between us sit down and you are in a dialogue. The chair is made from plywood, cold-cured foam and wool upholstery. It was designed by Poul Christiansen & Boris Berlin of Komplot Design. Erik Jørgensen was exhibiting at the Stockholm Furniture Fair in Sweden earlier this year. The theme for EJ s stand was Innovation and Sustainability. The stand presented the many new exciting designs that have been added to the collection in 2009, and in addition brand new designs from 2010 were introduced. The designers of the new products included the talented young design duo GamFratesi and EJ s long-standing collaboration partners Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen. The beautiful Insula coffee table was launched in new versions as dining and conference tables. Other products presented on the stand were the eco-friendly Qo2 chair/sofa, the In Duplo sofa series, the Insula coffee table and the Eyes chair in a new stackable version. The Stockholm Fair is Northern Europe s premier furniture fair today and was held in February in Stockholm, Sweden. Eyes is a lightly upholstered chair, designed by Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen. It was originally developed as a comfortable conference or dining chair for both private homes and the contract market. Because of its high level of comfort, Eyes is suitable for use in many different situations, and several new versions have now been developed. The latest of these is a stackable chair, to be launched at this year s Stockholm fair. Eyes is also available as a high and low bar stool and with armrests. This is how the designers of Eyes describe the chair: With Eyes we have created a shell chair with a high level of comfort. Soft lines trace the contours of the chair around the sturdy shell, which allows plenty of room for the body. Visually, we sense the comfort through the soft lines tracing the imprint of the body. A soft, inviting shell surrounded by softly rounded edges. When seated, you feel the comfort through the perfect support given to the body. The fabric-covered surfaces are pleasantly warm, yield to the shape of the body and are nice and springy. Eyes is a modern shell chair that can be dressed up to be serious and solemn, stylishly elegant or deliberately provocative, all according to how fabrics are combined with buttons and underframe. As an alternative to the massproduced uniform plastic shell chair, you can create an Eyes chair to your own liking. I Saloni, the Milan Furniture Fair, will be launching the fair this year under the slogan The Event is Back, in order to signal the furniture industry s defiance in the face of the financial crisis and its readiness to meet the challenge in a changed marketplace. Erik Jørgensen has created several unique, innovative new pieces of furniture both in 2009 and 2010, thereby helping to prove that creativity in the furniture industry has not run out of steam because of the crisis. EJ is participating in I Saloni with a stand where the theme is Innovation and Feminine Design. The stand will present selected pieces of furniture from the new collection, all featuring soft shapes combined with innovative thinking and sustainability. The Milan furniture fair is the climax of the year for the international furniture industry. It is held from 14 to19 April Erik Jørgensen adds another chair variation to the Eyes family. The comfortable shell chair has large potential in many different contexts with its inviting design. The new swivel version with four star base is ideal around a conference table but also around the diner table at home and as a decorative and comfortable office chair. The Delphi sofa, launched in 2007, is well on the way to establishing itself as a modern classic design in Erik Jørgensen s collection. It is a sofa that offers great versatility and many possible permutations within a simple and clearly constructed modular system an innovative, elegant and accomplished design. Delphi has already received several awards. Erik Jørgensen is in the process of launching a campaign with focus on Delphi matched with the beautiful and popular Steelcut and Steelcut Trio fabrics by Kvadrat in selected colours. The fabric, with its slightly textured finish, goes particularly well with the shape and features of the sofa. The Swiss designer of Delphi, Hannes Wettstein, has said, I am not so much concerned about designing objects as I am interested in the lifestyles that will be unfolding in and around them. One of Erik Jørgensen s popular chairs, Flamingo, is now available in an extra wide version. Flamingo was first shown at the furniture fair in the Bella Center in May 2003 and quickly established itself as a very popular chair for both the workplace and private home. To make the chair more user friendly, a wider version has been introduced, making it comfortable for users of all sizes. Flamingo s beautiful, slim design has not been affected, however, and the chair is just as harmonious in the new width. Flamingo is designed by Johannes Foersom and Peter Hiort-Lorenzen, who have belonged to the elite of Danish furniture designers since With its very fine lines, Flamingo represents the very best that modern upholstery techniques can produce. The fully-upholstered seat and back shells are exceptionally slim and sharply delineated as a result of new technology. The development of moulded, self-supporting units makes it possible to fasten the slim seat and back sections to a light frame, thereby creating a strong chair with a very elegant appearance. Flamingo chairs, in all sizes, make excellent conference chairs but also look fabulous round one of the classic Danish dinner tables.
