1 UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI / SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN Zoomable World/ Misbehaved Tectonics Mara Marcu, Assitant Professor, LEED AP UC SAID Ming Tang, Assitant Professor, AIA, LEED AP UC SAID One of the most widespread theoretical techniques, thirding follows the dialectical formula of thesis - anti-thesis - synthesis. It can be described as follows: a binary opposition is formulated, each with advantages and disadvantages, and then a third term is invented to combine the advantages and avoid the disadvantages of both. Zoomable World /Misbehaved Tectonics proposes through a highly iterative fabrication process a reinvention of classical tectonic systems that begins to highlight the characteristics of a new striking formal and conceptual repertoire. Departing from the categorization set forth by Farshid Moussavi in her book titled The Function of Form, various structural systems were physically and digitally modeled, while engaging different media with their implicit ways of making. They include: textile architecture, casting/hybrid analogues, 3d printing, vacuum forming, paper folding, and CNC routing. Students were asked to speculate on how various ways of constructing mutate the chosen precedent. Following this process the students were asked to synthesize the two parts of the semester and present at the final review a possible resolution to the zoomable world/ misbehaved tectonics dichotomy. The outcome of this intensive methodology elicited various compelling propositions. The SOFA Exhibit is a proposed installation that curates and expands on this student work produced at the University of Cincinnati School of Architecture and Interior Design. The installation has three components. One constitutes white 6 by 6 artifacts (in the form of 3d printed models, spray painted CNC high density polyurethane models, textile artifacts and paper models) resulted from the second year undergraduate studios at SAID coordinated by Mara Marcu. These artifacts expand on the notion of tectonics and structure in architecture and collectively create a catalogue of misbehaved tectonic possibilities. The second part of the installation is a field of display seating and shelving islands for the selected 30 to 40 artifacts. These islands are cross sectionally prototyped from fiberboard painted black and veneered with black Formica, allowing visitors to walk through the installation and see each artifact at various heights, from eye level to 2 above ground. The third part consists of a fullscale prototype of one misbehaved tectonic system. This is a polypropylene installation that acts as a suspended canopy, expanding on the folded plate structural system, which is adapted to the exhibition space. The canopy forms an inhabitable space that masks the lighting integration for the artifacts below. 1
2 BIOS / MARA MARCU + MING TANG Ming Tang, AIA, LEED AP, Assistant Professor, School of Architecture and Interior Design (SAID), College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning at University of Cincinnati. He is a registered architect, and founding partner of Tang & Yang Architects. The firm has won numerous design awards, including first place in d3 Natural System Competition, IAAC self-sufficient housing contest, and Chichen Itza lodge museum design competition. His research includes parametric design, digital fabrication, building information modeling, virtual reality, human-computer interaction (HCI), and performance-driven design. His book, Parametric Building Design with Autodesk Maya was published by Routledge in Homepage: Mara Marcu, LEED AP, is an Assistant Professor at the School of Architecture and Interior Design, University of Cincinnati. She received her Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Houston, where she was awarded the Best in Show Design Award, and her Master of Architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. She is also a graduate of the Glenn Murcutt International Master Class and was selected to work with architect Brian MacKay-Lyons for Ghost Lab 7. Her research focuses on providing a digital and material workflow that connects design, fabrication, and culture-specific topics. Her work has been featured in various publications, online, in multiple exhibitions and presented at several conferences. In the past, Mara Marcu taught at the University of Virginia as a Visiting Fellow in Architecture, and at the University of Houston. She currently provides design services under the umbrella of MM13. *This work is supported by the University of Cincinnati Third Century Research Materials Grant Arts for Humanities, and Social Sciences for $10,000. **The installation is being built by Mara Marcu, Ming Tang and their students over the summer and early fall. *** The 3d printed, CNC routed, paper, vacuum formed, cast and textile artifacts are already produced and have been collected by Ming Tang and Mara Marcu from the students over the past two years. 2

5 SOFA INSTALLATION / RENDERINGS interior perspective, rendering The second year studio sequences - ARCH 2002 and SAID coordinated and designed by Mara Marcu and Ming Tang, introduce students to contemporary fabrication methods and practices in architecture, and, at the same time, allow students to formulate, at a young age, a research agenda. These two courses have produced over the past two years an index of tectonic possibilities that redefines traditional structural systems, function of material selection and fabrication methodology. Following, a reclassification of traditional structures is being proposed departing from the classical grids, shells, vaults, domes, and membranes. Using innovative materials - such as temperature sensitive polypropylene with color changing capabilities and Formica - with novel fabrication methods - such as CNC routing and 3d printing our installation showcases lightweight alternatives to classical construction methods. Visitors can walk through this field of tectonic possibilities, lit from above by a canopy, which is itself an expansion of the folded plate structural system. This canopy is made from a lightweight polymer-based material that is temperature sensitive, meaning that it changes colors function of varying lighting conditions. View from below, the canopy has kaleidoscopic qualities. Nested in this canopy is a lighting system for the field of artifacts below. Due to the folded plate structure, which is nothing else than a scaled up origami construction, the canopy can bulge down forming cones that can become inhabitable. Visitors can in this way walk inside of a cone, that drops down from the canopy to about 5 above ground, to find more information about the field of 3d printed artifacts below. Text and drawings printed on the polypropylene sheets forming the cones give details to the mission of the exhibition. The polypropylene sheets are attached with nylon rivets. 5
