Ted and Kelly, now thirtysomething s, started on a small scale while both were working on MBA s. They did a lot of research, incorporating the construction and development of their business plan as part of their MBA projects. They got married shortly after starting the business. We were able to get feedback from our professors, says Kelly, who received her MBA at Case Western Reserve University. Ted says that dating and starting the business were part of a whirlwind. Kelly recalls, We were planning a wedding, getting our MBA s and working at our separate full-time jobs, too. This was the couple s first real test in multitasking. Today, they have a one-yearold child, Isabella. Ted worked for Turner Construction Company for six years and before that another custom homebuilder and grew up with them. I received my civil engineering degree from Case Western Reserve and am very familiar with commercial construction, Ted says. Sometimes it s a dream; sometimes it s a curse. Kelly chimes in: Depending on the day. Kelly attended the University of Michigan and has undergraduate degrees in economics and organizational skills. She moved to the greater Cleveland area for a management-training program. She is originally from Canton, Michigan. Ted played college football at the University of Cincinnati and transferred to CWRU. He grew up in Independence. I owe Turner Construction a lot, Ted says. They took me from being an assistant superintendent to learning project management skills, as well as accounting procedures and the estimating process. I worked with some of the best construction professionals in the industry. There are a lot of skills that you don t learn in civil engineering school. Many of the skills need to be learned hands-on. As a project engineer or a small business owner it is essential to be able to change your hat to deal with many different people. Being exposed to so many positions gave me essential experience that I use on a daily basis. Turner Construction and all of [its] employees are unmatched in the Cleveland construction market. Ted s family never hired contractors to do anything around the house. His father did everything himself. Ted assisted his father on everything from building decks, large additions, landscaping, fin- O-3

His father is a huge inspiration to him. He taught Ted that anything is possible with hard work and determination. Ted s motto to this day is to believe in the possibility of the impossible. While attending graduate school, Ted also found time to renovate houses in Lakewood. Ted recalls about his dad, He taught me the ropes all the way through. What are their roles in today s business? Ted s role as president is project development and plan implementation. Kelly s role is marketing and interior design and coordination. I develop the plan, then she takes it from there, Ted says. For example, Kelly works with the tile shop and goes to the kitchen/cabinet store. That s another cost savings. We don t charge for Kelly s expertise. She knows the interior finishes so well, that clients don t need an interior designer. Bill Mills, one of the firm s clients who will move into a custom-built Otero home this spring, agrees, noting that Kelly has an outstanding eye for color and design. The two of them make a great team, Mills adds. And Ted s really a perfectionist and good executor when he says something s going to be done, it gets done. Small business owners have to be willing to fill many different roles, so Kelly and Ted work as a team to accomplish all of the responsibilities, from the difficult to the mundane. [Working with Ted on the business] is challenging and exciting, Kelly says. I always wanted my own business. He had a plan from day one, and I thought that it sounded exciting. So far so good. Ted says about working with Kelly on the business: We re very competitive. It is like putting two lions in a cage. O-4 Properties January 2008

We draw on each others strengths and weaknesses. I ve known I wanted to do this since I was ten years old, he adds. I always wanted to build everything from hotels to houses. I started researching colleges and looked at architectural schools. When I saw that the first two years of architecture school required several general art classes, I knew that I did not have that type of artistic ability, so I studied engineering. At first, the two were planning on building homes in the $400,000 range, but as they started, the first project was in the $565,000 range. While selling the first house, the Oteros received a lot of positive customer feedback. We often hear from clients that they have been in the market for several months before they were introduced to Otero Signature Homes, Ted says. Based on client feedback our spec homes have evolved to be even larger in size and include more standard features. We believe the fastest way to success is to listen to your customers. Ted says they have never sat on a spec home; the houses have always sold before they are finished. Kelly attributes a lot of their success to the uniqueness and Mediterranean flair that is their signature style. Clients agree, including Pedro and Ruth Boria, who moved into an Otero-built home in Auburn Township in The Mediterranean style of the homes is why we were first drawn to Otero Signature Homes, Pedro says. Beyond that, their products are very well built with all the extras that you don t get from many other builders. We ve been really happy with the personalized service as well. Even after a year of us living in our new home, Ted is still very attentive and responsive to our needs. It is very important to stay true to using quality construction materials, Ted says. As pressures continue to increase, from tightening lending requirements, increases in energy, electrical and water management/septic code requirements, as well as market saturation it would be understandable to cut quality, Ted says, however quality construction is our most important market differentiation. Even though our direct construction cost may exceed other builders, we have less callbacks and more satisfied customers in the long run, while being highly price competitive. Reputation is the most valued asset for Otero Signature Homes.
