Responsible Management of Forest Resources Wood is a durable, versatile and beautiful material that has been used for building for centuries. It is non-toxic, recyclable and its growth and replanting removes carbon dioxide from the environment. It has a multitude of uses. For construction purposes, it is the only fully sustainable resource. We encourage our suppliers to manage forests consistent with sustainable, renewable forest practices, and watershed and wildlife habitat protection. Sustainability means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to be able to meet their needs. We recognise that our future success in wood products manufacturing is dependent upon responsible and sustainable forest management. Reducing Our Carbon Footprint and Increasing Energy Efficiency of Our Operations Part of being good stewards of the environment also involves designing and constructing our buildings and production processes to use as little energy as possible. For example, we presently generate heat from the burning of wood waste, to drive our production processes. We will strive to reduce the amount of energy we as a company are required to purchase to operate our plants and offices, and emphasise efficient use of energy and natural resources throughout our operations. Long-Lasting Products to Reduce Waste Our long-lasting products and industry-leading warranties mean fewer replacements are needed during the lifetime of doors. The positive benefits to the customer and the environment are significant, including fewer deliveries and reduced fuel costs for manufacturing and distribution, as well as greatly reduced waste (i.e. longer lasting products reduce additions to landfills and energy consumption required to make replacement products). Green Building In a green building, the materials, design methods and construction techniques are carefully reviewed for their environmental impact. Initially focused on commercial building, sustainable design elements are now being incorporated into residential projects. In addition, we know that our customers are increasingly demanding green products for their homes, whether they are remodelling or building a new home and it is our goal to provide them with those products. It is clearly in our interest, our customers interest and the industry s interest to accelerate the adoption of building practices that result in more energy-efficient, healthier and environmentally sustainable buildings. To this end, we will continue to participate in the development and implementation of Green Building certification programs that promote credible and practical green building approaches for residential and commercial construction products. In this regard, we can manufacture certain products that contain Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) rated materials that will comply to the MAT (Material Selection Criteria, in terms of materials used) and IEQ (Indoor Environmental Quality) standards of the Green Building Council and therefore contribute to credit points for Green Star Rating of a building project. FSC promotes environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world s forests and we strive to utilise suppliers who adhere to these practices in their harvest and replanting operations. 31 How to hang a door: A copy of Corinthian s "How to Hang a Door" brochure is available from any Corinthian office/showroom. It gives the full detail behind these basic steps: Step 1: Measure your present door including the thickness. Check the door frame opening to ensure it is square. Step 2: Select your new door. Step 3: Remove your current door. Step 4: Check the new door against the old door, plane door to required height, stand the door against the hinge stile in the opening. If it is too wide, mark the corresponding door stile and plane to fit. Replace the door in the opening to ensure correct fit. Step 5: Measure, mark and check-out hinges on door stile. Drill screw holes and fasten hinges to the door. Stand door against the hinge stile of the jamb in the open position, supporting the door with wedges. Fix the door to the jamb. Remove the door and hinges, applying 2 coats of sealer to the top and bottom edges, hinge check-outs and re-hang the door fixing all screws into place. Step 6: Fit door furniture and start painting or staining. Simple! Measuring up for a new door: 1. Measure your existing door height, width and thickness. 2. Check that the door is square. A trimming allowance of up to 5mm is allowed on most doors. Check with your nearest Corinthian branch to confirm trim allowance. 3. 3mm clearance is required for the top and sides of the door and 5mm for the bottom, above the floor covering. Care & Finish Storage: Always store your raw doors flat, in a dry place and avoid freshly plastered areas. Installation: All solid construction, Coritech construction and external doors need to be hung with three 89mm hinges to provide enough support. If trimming is required, be sure not to exceed the trimming allowance for that door. Fit hinges to the door first, then, using a timber wedge under the door, mark the hinge position on the jamb. After fitting and prior to hanging, the entire door, including the top and bottom edges, must receive two coats of paint, varnish or sealer. Awnings are recommended for entrance doors exposed to weather. Pre-Finishing: Exterior finishes must be used on external doors. It is recommended that enamel paint be used on external doors. Do not use dark colours if the doors are exposed to direct sunlight. Satin or semi-gloss paints produce the best results. Always apply one coat of primer, sand lightly in the direction of the grain, apply another coat of undercoat, finish with two coats of enamel colour. If applying a clear finish or staining, the entire door including top, bottom and all edges must receive at least three coats of external grade varnish/sealer to prevent undue absorption or moisture which may cause warping to occur. Always seal the top, bottom and sides, including behind the hinges. Timber Variation: The timber and veneers used in doors are a natural product that will have significant variation in colour and grain pattern, these variations are unavoidable and will not be considered defects. Ongoing maintenance: Doors should be periodically checked for signs of breakdown in finish.
