AILA Victoria Annual Report

2 Victorian President s Report In , the second and final year of this AILA Victoria Executive s term, we have consolidated the foundation work of , with a focus on advocating to Government, raising the profile of the profession and ensuring a sustainable chapter. With the membership base growing to over 1000 members, enabled by applications from many senior landscape architects, and AILA Fresh s active engagement with new students and recent graduates, AILA Victoria continues to have the largest membership in Australia. With AILA turning 50 in 2016, there was much to celebrate! Birthday parties were held across Australia on 25 August and the third Festival held in Canberra in October. The new AILA Awards program was launched with public-facing categories showcasing the breadth of the profession. The Victorian Awards event and exhibition attracted a big crowd to Melbourne University in late July. Due to regional projects winning a number of awards, good media outreach was enabled across Victoria about significant urban and rural projects led by landscape architects. National campaigns, including Parks Changing Australia made an impact in every state, with award-winning projects showcased in airport lounges in all capital cities. Two Premier events, focusing on thought leadership and attracting a broad cross section of the membership and allied professions were hosted by AILA Victoria. The Living Cities Victoria Summit forum, sponsored by Flemings Nurseries and Lawn Solutions in November 2016, drew an audience of over 100 people to hear key influencers across Government and industry discuss the importance of green infrastructure to the future of our state. An evening with Thomas Woltz, sponsored by Fleming s Nurseries and RMIT in February 2017, inspired many with descriptions of the New York practice s large scale, poetic projects. The partnership between the Victorian Chapters of AILA, AIA and PIA gained momentum with three co-hosted events on key urban issues and culminating in the PIA International Women s Day breakfast. It was recognised at this event that all three of the built environment peak bodies in Victoria had women as their Chapter Presidents. As part of the National Gallery of Victoria s Melbourne Design Week, Foreground presented the Urban Ecology: City as Living Systems Symposium in partnership with WE-EF LIGHTING and AILA Victoria. Alongside these events, nine technical and professional development events were sponsored by our key partners, continuing productive relationships. The program included Mornington Lighting Tour (September 2016) and Sustainable Lighting Event both with WE-EF LIGHTING (December 2016), Modeling Practice, led by Cultivate with City of Melbourne (October 2016), Working with Water with Austral Masonry (October 2016), a Christmas event for AILA members sponsored by Hardie Deck (December 2016), WE-EF LIGHTING s Blackbook launch (March 2017), Learning from Docklands Park with Celebrity Lawn Series (March 2017), Playspace and fitness stations tour with Lappset (May 2017), and a Public Sector Technical Talk by Street Furniture Australia. In terms of advocacy, while we didn t quite match the 16 submissions of , AILA s submissions and representations at key industry forums on resilience, water and green infrastructure, Melbourne s major urban renewal areas of Arden and Fishermans Bend, and key transport projects, have had major impact. An example is Infrastructure Victoria s (IV) 30 year Infrastructure plan, where AILA s advocacy ensured that green infrastructure, not part of the initial draft, was featured in the final plan. 3 3 Excerpts from AILA s submission to Ministerial Advisory Committee for the Yarra River also featured in the public reports. Media now seeks AILA s views on urban issues, such as the Central City Built Form Review and the Apartment Standards. Engagement with the next generation of professionals has gained considerable momentum this year, thanks to the AILA Fresh Committee continuing to connect students and graduates to practice, across private, public and academic sectors. Delivering a program of studio tours, speed dating with practitioners, and Fresh Fridays, a networking event alternating between city bars and practitioner s offices, a strong and highly networked cohort of graduates is emerging. This Executive reflects on the Connection to Country strategy, led by a Victorian Working Group and now a formal Committee, to be the project we are most proud of championing during our term. The work includes the development of a strategy, a full day Symposium in March 2016, the development of a National Position Statement, and the drafting of a National Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). Initiated and led by Anne Marie Pisani, but with input from the Committee and the Executive, this work sets a strong foundation to actively advance the relationship of Landscape Architects with Victorian Indigenous Communities, to increase knowledge of Victorian Indigenous Culture and to embed this knowledge into the teaching and practice of Landscape Architecture. We hope the new Executive will continue to support and champion this significant work. In October the Michel Masson, CEO Infrastructure Victoria stated the proposed program to expand green infrastructure across the state including urban forests, gardens, parks, highway verges and waterways would have wide-ranging benefits.encourage healthier and more active lifestyles, bring communities together, and improve air and water quality which was a direct quote from AILA s submission on Infrastructure Victoria s 30 year Infrastructure plan,. Thank you also to the Chapter Office, Felicity McGahan and Kate Western, who have worked hard to implement both the State and National programs for AILA. With Kate s departure to Local Government, we welcome Martha Delfas as our Events and Development Manager, who will work with Felicity in her role as Membership and Engagement Manager. On behalf of this Executive, we wish the next Executive the very best as they work implement the National Strategy, in a way that responds to our State s issues and opportunities and furthers the profession of landscape architecture in Victoria. Huge thanks to Mary Papaioannou (Vice-President), Pru Smith (Secretary) and Dean Thornton (Treasurer), for their commitment, time and knowledge in pushing the agendas of AILA forward. To all the Chairs of the Committees and members who volunteer their time and knowledge to support the profession and the Institute, a big thank you.

4 Treasurer s Report This financial year report is based on draft figures as at end of June AILA Victorian Chapter reported a net profit of $4, after a total expenditure of $139, and income of $143, In FY2016/17 the main source of income consists of: Membership fees allocated from National $56,026 National Corporate Partner Sponsorship Allocation $30, Awards attendance, Awards Entry Fees, Awards Sponsorship $28,150 Sponsorships General $25,000 Event Attendance & Event Sponsorship $4,309 Income from event attendance and event sponsorship was significantly down from last year (circa $25k) as was income associated with the awards (down circa $8k). This was somewhat offset by an increase of income of $6k from General Sponsorships. Income from membership fees and national corporate partner sponsors was very similar to last year. Income overall was also significantly below the budget of $190k. AILA Victoria continues to have a rigorous budgeting process in place including National Reviews to set and approve budgets for each financial year. This process enables the Vic Chapter to track accurate financial records on a monthly basis. We would like to thank all our sponsors for their ongoing financial and in kind support. 2017/2018 AILA Vic has an approved budget for 2017/2018 that forecasts income of approx. $184K and expenses of $174K, resulting in a forecast $10,000 profit. AILA Vic will work towards this budget and hopes to continue to secure new partnerships that may provide more opportunities to generate additional income. Recent changes to the structure of the chapter office will assist in this aim. Dean Thornton AILA Victorian Treasurer In FY2016/17 the main expenses were as follows: Wages and Salaries, Superannuation, Leave $103,027 Premises $6,622 Events catering, Awards expenses, venues etc $22,469 All major expenses were lower or on par with last year and well below the budget forecast of $178k, accounting for the healthy profit returned this year. A move to lower cost premises for the chapter office and significant savings on the cost of hosting the awards were major contributors. Dinner after the May Executive Meeting with WE-EF LIGHTING

5 New York landscape architect Thomas Woltz hosted by AILA Victoria at RMIT on 28 February AILA turned 50 On Thursday 25 August 2016 members across the country simultaneously celebrated AILA s 50th Birthday. AILA Victoria reached 1000 members in May 2017 A celebration of this significant milestone will be held on the 9 August 2017 at Development Victoria following the Annual State Chapter Meeting AILA membership in Victoria has more than doubled over the past 4 years!

6 AILA Living Cities Victoria Summit How can green infrastructure impact the sustainable growth of our cities? Working Group: Adrian Gray, Felicity McGahan, Joan Tachado, Mary Papaioannou, Pru Smith, Veronica Carrasco On 10 November 2016 the AILA Living Cities Victoria Summit was held at AECOM to discuss the role of green infrastructure (or living infrastructure ) in the sustainable growth of Victoria. This summit following on from Canberra s Living Cities Workshop held in February 2016 which resulted in the development of a National Five Point Living Infrastructure Plan. The Victorian event continued the conversation and sought to encourage the adoption of green infrastructure and the delivery of the five points. The Victorian event attracted a large turnout of built environment professionals. The summit was sponsored by Lawn Solutions Australia with support from AECOM and Fleming s Nurseries. Speakers and guest panelists included Peter Seamer, CEO Victorian Planning Authority Jill Garner, Victorian Government Architect Sally Capp, Victorian Executive Director, Property Council Wes Fleming, Director, Fleming s Nurseries Adrian Gray, Manger Urban Design Brimbank Council Tim O Loan, Practice Lead - Design and Planning, AECOM Emma Appleton, AILA Victorian President. The panel was facilitated by Professor Rob Adams, Director City Design and Projects at the City of Melbourne who led a robust discussion on green infrastructure and its implementation. Some of the key messages form the night was that green infrastructure is critical to the liveability of our cities, and pathways need to be sought to ensure its funding and implementation. Increasing tree canopies, water sensitive urban design approaches, and utilising public space efficiently leads to higher quality and more adaptive urban environments. Climate change presents risks but also opportunities to prioritise and encourage the adoption of green infrastructure as an asset to our community, economy and built environment.

AILA Victoria will formally welcome and present certificates to the new Registered Landscape Architects at the Victorian Chapter 2017 Annual Committee Meeting.

10 Committee Highlights Advocacy Committee Promotes and supports Landscape Architecture practice. Undertakes statebased advocacy work to assist, inform and influence government agencies and allied professions to ensure Landscape Architects play a principal role in the design, planning and management of the natural and built environment. Members: Brenton Beggs (Chair), Ailstair Wenn, Alice Leake, Mark Skiba, Peter Blackledge, Zoe Loomes, Deborah Piattoni, Katherine Rekaris. Thank-you to former members: Gemma Ashley, Matthew Kneale, Alastair Jaffray Over the past year the AILA Victoria Advocacy Committee has worked to continue to renew member interest in advocacy issues. The Committee has coordinated and prepared submissions on various current advocacy issues including: Central City Built Form Review Nightingale Apartments Skyrail The Better Apartments Discussion Paper Draft Arden Vision & Framework A key project for next year will be to establish a state advocacy plan/matrix. The committee will also focus on continuing to engage and interest AILA members in advocacy issues, and how to better utilise the resources and knowledge of the broader AILA membership. Public Sector Committee AILA Victorian Public Sector Landscape Architects Committee represents the views and interests of Registered Landscape Architects working in the Public Sector in Victoria. The Committee aims to enhance AILA s representation of Public Sector Landscape Architects. Members: Cath Olive (Chair), Adrian Gray, Alison Breach, Carolynne MacNaughtan, Cath Knight, Francine Stacey, Hamish Coates, Jessica Salehian, Joanna Bush, Jules Martin, Katie Williams, Leon Hassell, Mandy Banks, Mark Brennan, Nadia Combe, Nicole Lenffer, Robyn Mansfield, Skye Haldane, Stacey Robinson, Sue Hecker Thank-you to former members: Tracey O Connor, Stuart Hale The Public Sector Landscape Architects (PSLA) Committee has expanded to include a broad range of public sector representation. This initiative was underpinned by the importance of continuing to raise the profile of PSLA s as key influencers on public policy and project delivery. The increased breadth of representation has helped to address the silo effect that many landscape architects experience in public sector. The committee has established a forum for dialogue on current issues such as the impacts of rate capping, policy input and expertise sharing which help with the ongoing advocacy work that is often central to many PSLA s. The ongoing focus for the PSLA committee will be to grow membership and continue to promote the role of landscape architects working within the public sector.

11 Cultivate Committee Aims to engage AILA with emerging landscape theory and design topics by providing forums for conversation and collaboration. Members: Jen Lynch and Emily Wong (Co-Chairs), Elly Russell In October 2016, Cultivate hosted Modeling Practice, an event on emerging landscape practice in Melbourne. The event framed a discussion between four of Melbourne s emerging landscape practices: Bush Projects (Bonnie Grant and Sarah Hicks), Pollen Studio (Dan Nunan), MALA Studio (Cam Morris with Joe Morgan-Paylor) and AKAS Landscape Architecture (Anthony Sharples and Alistair Kirkpatrick). Each practice presented itself in the form of a manifesto, outlining the key theories, questions, techniques, mentors, precedents and principles that inspire their work. Presentations and a panel discussion following surfaced the diversity of the practices as well as a series of common themes, including the importance of collaboration, risktaking and boundary-pushing. In the first half of 2017, Cultivate has collaborated with the Connection to Country Committee to plan a follow-up event to the 2016 Connection to Country Symposium. The event to be held in mid-2017 will introduce a new thread to the chapter s ongoing discussion around engagement with Indigenous culture, communities and knowledge systems the cultivation of a Connection to Country approach in Australian design education. In the second half of 2017, Cultivate will also host an event on emerging housing models in Melbourne and the expanded role that our profession might play in the new design and development processes that realise them. Cultivate also plans to host a new long table series starting in the second half of This series will involve discussion over dinner and drinks with invited guests from practice and academia. The first will take place in June 2017, with editors who will share the experience working in the journalism end of practice. Modeling Practice event panel

13 The cultural story of the Yarra and how it connects places and people should be reclaimed, elevated and celebrated in public consciousness, through media campaigns and education. Indigenous cultural history is the basis of this story and should inform future management and interpretation of the Yarra. Australian Institute of Landscape Architects Environment Committee Committed to advancing landscape architects as leaders in the ongoing stewardship of the built and natural environment, ecologically sustainable development, adaptive and regenerative landscape architecture, and collaboration and advocacy within the profession and wider community. Members: Dr Meredith Dobbie (Chair), Adrian Marshall, Ana Susanj, Charles Nilson, David Dreadon, Joan Tachado, Katie Williams, Martin Rowland, Scott Watson, Skye Haldane, Sue Ozanne, Veronica Carrasco, Zoe Metherell Thank-you to former members: Sarah Rivett and Danielle Rancourt The Environment Committee continued to meet monthly for breakfast, to discuss environmental issues related to landscape architecture. The committee s activities this year again had a strong focus on advocating to government, authorities and organizationals. Submissions lead by the committee were made in response to: Melbourne Metro Rail Project Environmental Effects Statement Draft Integrated Water Management Framework for Victoria Safe and Accessible Victorian Waterways Discussion Paper Yarra River (Birrarung) Discussion Paper The Yarra Ministerial Advisory Committee quoted from the Environment Committee s submission in its Community Views report (see above). Dr Meredith Dobbie also contributed to the development the AILA National Policy Statement Climate, Risk and Resilience and AILA s submission to the Australian Governments review of Australia s Climate Change Policies. In the coming year, the committee intend to continue their work in proving a voice for AILA on environmental issues. They will also explore synergies with the Advocacy Committee, while continuing to encourage new membership.

14 Committee Highlights FRESH Committee Aims to generate networks and relationships for students and graduates of landscape architecture, in order to foster a sense of social and professional cohesion, mentorship, growth and development. Members: Ella Gauci-Seddon (Chair), Castiel Shepp, Heather Stevenson, Neha Juddoo, Shelley Black, Thomas Black, Jenny Yu, Nathan Collins Following on from AILA Fresh Victoria s aims of last year the committee has been working hard to build a community of students and recent graduates, creating a space where members feel welcome. Through regular events, an increased social media presence and reaching out to universities, AILA Fresh has become a more integrated part of the student/graduate lifestyle. In October 2016 during the Not in My Backyard AILA Festival in Canberra AILA Fresh Victoria held drinks in Melbourne for students and grads who were unable to make it to the conference. The event Drinks in Our Backyard was paired with an Instagram photo competition that asked entrants to post a photo of their backyard (#vicmybackyard) and was generously sponsored by Lappset. The night was a huge success with around students and grads turning up throughout the event. Christmas drinks, which were run in collaboration with the Victorian Young Planners, were held at the end of the year and also had an excellent turn out. The Festival again saw the AILA Fresh Chairs from each state come together for their Annual General Meeting which was an extremely valuable event. For the second year Veronica Carrasco (ex Fresh committee member) created The Journey app which this time mapped out projects in Canberra saw AILA Fresh Victoria launch their social after work drink series Fresh Fridays. This series is key to the development of a cohesive network and community of students and grads in Victoria. The vision for Fresh Fridays is that they give Fresh members the opportunity to meet each other, but also to gain an understanding of the industry and meet people with a variety of levels of experience. As such the events alternate between casual drinks held at different, interesting venues around Melbourne, and being held at Melbourne landscape architecture offices with presentations from the staff about the practice. So far our casual drinks have been held at Loop Bar (March) and Whitehart Bar (May), and we have visit Tract (April) with the next event to be held at TCL (June). The events have received overwhelmingly positive feedback and it has been exciting to watch the community grow as a result. Other key achievements this year have been the recruitment of 88 first year students from RMIT and 30 students from the University of Melbourne Masters program. The Facebook following has grown from 300 to over 400 since June A competition to design a new AILA Fresh Victoria logo was also launched at the end of May with the winner to be announced in July. Moving forward AILA Fresh Victoria has a lot in store. The committee have been putting together a proposal to expand the annual Professional Speed Dating event into a larger, more elaborate AILA Fresh Expo, the first stage of which will be tested in September. Initial steps have been taken to run a mentorship program in the second half of Finally, AILA Fresh Victoria will continue to develop its focus on creating events, programs and other tools that will help its member expand their skills beyond university, and provide assistance in transitioning into and growing within the workforce.
