2 Oil Applications to Evergreen in Fall from Stanton Gill Well, our comments about fall applications of oil on evergreens created a flurry of s and calls. Several applicators said they have been doing fall applications for years with no noticeable impact on winter hardiness while others are telling me they have seen injury. Norm Brady on the Eastern Shore said he has been applying oil in the fall for over 30 years with no noticeable ill impacts. He noted that if oil was applied on a stressed plant that it would likely show injury, but he did not feel a healthy plant would suffer. Time For a Field Trial - I have a nursery that has volunteered several species of plants for a fall oil application trial. We set up the trial this week on Tuesday, October 23rd using red holly, American holly (three cultivars), Dragon Lady (Ilex x aquipernyi), Ilex x koehneana and Leyland cypress. We are applying a 3% rate for the horticultural oil using an experimental design of 5 completely randomized blocks. We will photograph the trees this fall before and after the applications and again in March. We should have some results for you in the spring. Scale on Peony Last week I (Stanton) received a peony sample with an armored scale on it. This was a first in my career as an entomologist. Tony Murdock, Fine Pruning, sent the sample to our lab. At first I thought it might be peony scale but I could not find a viable female to do a slide mount for an identification. I sent the sample to John Davidson, retired entomologist, and he patiently examined many of the scale covers until he uncovered a viable female. We need females for the identification process. John identified it as white peach scale. John said that this sample is the first time this scale has been officially reported on peony. Maryland is always proud to be first in whatever we do and now we have the first case of white peach scale on peony. White peach scale on peony Brown Marmorated Stink Bug Comments Joanne Hutton has had reports from friends in Great Falls who have been watching carolina wrens pursuing and eating BMSB s on their deck. Doris Crafton is also hearing from friends with hundreds of stink bugs on their screens. Preston Leyshon, Chapel Valley Landscaping, is finding them inside and outside of his office. 3 Lecanium Scale Steve Sullivan, The Brickman Group, reported lecanium scale on zelkova in parking lot island plantings in Columbia. There were still crawlers active this late in the season. Female covers were also found. Sooty Mold Close-up Soft scales and aphids can produce large amounts of honeydew which is a food source for sooty mold fungus. Jim Young, APHIS, sent in a photo of a large specimen of Scorias spongiosa which is the sooty mold fungus that feeds exclusively on the honeydew secreted by the beech blight aphid (Grylloprociphilus imbricator). Jim also noted that because the aphids feed in large groups the sooty mold can become a large spongy mass hanging in trees. His question is whether any trials have been published on using imidaclporid or dinotefuran for control of this borer? He said they do this already, but they want to know if a soil drench or injection of either of these materials would reduce the risk to their customer s tree. I (Stanton) sent out a notice to other entomologists across the United States to see if anyone had conducted a trial that had been published in a refereed journal. 3

4 Here is a comment that I received from Dave Shetlar of Ohio State University: I had a study lined up (sorry, no pun intended) a couple of years ago and the horticulturalist cut the trees down!! I have always told our landscape managers and nursery producers that the treatments recommended for emerald ash borer and bronze birch borer work fine against the twolined chestnut borer. The comments I get back is that this is true (including the imidacloprid drenches and/or injections). I have identified that the big issue with TLCB is that the oak trees are often dug early and sit on the garden center lots for several months (often from late April into mid-june). In Ohio, this means that the trees that are sold in June already have TLCB eggs on them, possibly even larvae in them! I have recommended that nursery producers should likely pre-treat the trees as they are being dug and/or the garden centers should drench the balls to get the trees through the first year. I also tackle this from the landscape managers angle. If they see any new oak in their customer s landscape, it should be treated for the first two years. As we are losing our ash trees, I see more oaks coming in. I think this is great, but the trees really need to be treated for the first two years, or until the trees appear to be established and growing well. After that, no further treatments are needed! A copy of the brochure is posted at Plant of the Week, Ginny Rosenkranz Parthenocissus quinquefolia, Virginia creeper, is a native deciduous woody vine that climbs up walls and over fences, up trees and through shrubs. It can grow 50 feet long and holds on to trees, walls and fences by grabbing on with tendrils that have adhesive pads on their ends. It can also act as a groundcover, spreading out in many directions and providing green color in the spring and summer in both sun and shade. They are like many vines, fast growing and able to overcome their host of shrub or tree, so care must be given to protect young or small plants. Virginia creeper can thrive in sun or shade and can survive in many different soil types and at different ph levels. The leaves of the Virginia creeper are palmately compound with 5 toothed leaflets while poison ivy, which is often confused with Virginia creeper has only 3 leaflets that can be smooth, wavy, lobed or toothed. The leaflets are between 2-6 inches long and 1-2 inches wide. In the autumn, Virginia creeper turns a beautiful scarlet, especially if the plants are grown in the sun. In early summer, the plant produces tiny yellow flowers in clusters that mature into purplish black berries that are poisonous to people but are 4

5 prized by many native birds and mammals. The foliage is a food source for caterpillars and white tail deer. There are 3 cultivars: Englemanii, which has smaller more delicate leaves and better clinging ability, Monham which has white variegated leaves and Variegata which has yellow and white and green Virginia creeper fall foliage Photos: Ginny Rosenkranz, UME leaves that turn red and pink in the fall. The sap of the berries can also cause skin irritation with some people. Insect pests include leafhoppers, scale and Japanese beetles and some of the diseases include mildews, leaf spots, cankers and wilts.
