The Yarram Yarram Landcare Network Board, Staff and Landcare Groups would like to welcome you to our Landcare Community. We look forward to your involvement in Landcare across our region. This Welcome Pack includes information on who we are, what we do and how you can participate in our vibrant Landcare Community.

What is Landcare? Landcare is a joint effort between the community, government and business to protect, enhance and improve our environment. It began in Victoria in 1986 and has become one of the most active and effective means of caring for your country throughout Australia. Yarram Yarram Landcare Network (YYLN) has a long history, with some of local groups amongst the oldest and most active in the State. We are proud of our local contribution. Yarram Yarram Landcare Network The YYLN was established in 1995 and covers a diverse area of approximately 118,000 hectares. YYLN stretches from the temperate rainforests of the Strzelecki Ranges to the Ramsar listed wetlands of Corner Inlet and Nooramunga Marine and Coastal Park, encompassing the Giffard Plain, along the Ninety Mile Beach to Seaspray. The YYLN is the umbrella organisation for 12 Landcare Groups, providing support and strategic direction across the YYLN area. The groups are made up of volunteers from the local area. Members are involved in a range of activities and events including: protecting remnant vegetation and revegetation, invasive plant and animal control, sustainable agriculture and environmental education. The Landcare Groups provide a framework for locals to get together. The YYLN is a not-for profit, incorporated association, managed by a volunteer board (made up of local people) who ensure the organisation is well governed, provide strategic direction for the region and representative of the local groups. The YYLN employ staff who manage the day to day running of the organisation and delivery of multiple onground sustainable agricultural and environmental stewardship projects. Staff play a vital role in coordinating on ground works, developing funding submissions, providing group support, partnership development and responding to community needs. What do we do? The YYLN provides support to its Landcare groups and coordinates and encourages sustainable land management and productivity. At a recent Strategic Planning Workshop YYLN identified the following key themes to guide its operation: - Landcare Group Support and Management - Sustainable Agriculture - Environmental Stewardship - Education, communication and promotion - Partnerships and collaboration - Funding - Governance How we do it The YYLN undertakes a variety of activities, events and projects: - Projects natural resource management programs to enhance and improve our environment (see over for more detail) - Field Days, Workshops and Training - Funding Funding applications and management - Communication YYLN Newsletter; Website; Welcome Pack; Educational Trailer; Annual Reporting; Media - Landcare Groups support with sourcing funds and project delivery; action planning - Administration manage membership; YYLN Board support; insurance; asset management; equipment hire; financial management and reporting - Community Seedbank manage seedbank to ensure local native seed supply for onground projects and community members.

The YYLN currently has the following active member groups. Landcare groups and sub-groups comprise a wide variety of individuals and a vast range of expertise. Some get together for single issue activities, others look at landscape change. Albert River Landcare Group Albert River Landcare Group looks after community based natural resource management along the Albert River, encompassing Alberton, Stacey s Bridge and Hiawatha. Members actively apply for grants, plant trees, remove noxious weeds, organise social events and participate in the JARR Project. Current projects include the Coastcare funded revegetation and weed control project at the Albert River mouth, Koala habitat protection and Waterwatch. Binginwarri Landcare Group The Binginwarri Landcare Group has undergone an amazing resurgence over the last 18-months. Led by Kaye Proudley, Kevin Heggen and John McClumpha the group has undertaken many events and projects including: monthly activities such as Reptile Rambles, Ragwort Control; Weeds for Trees; Blackberry Suppression and active JARR Project Members. More recently, the group has purchased digital cameras to undertake flora and fauna mapping. Hedley/9 Mile Creek Landcare Group The Hedley Landcare Group have also been a highly active group undertaken remnant vegetation protection, weed control, water way protection and revegetation. Local landholders have expressed an interest in reforming the group and undertake a 9-Mile Creek Catchment wide coordinated project. Merriman Creek Landcare Group Members of the Merriman Creek Landcare Group have been actively involved with the Mullungdung to Coast Project (planting trees and protecting remnant vegetation), the Gippsland Plains Drought Tolerant Pasture Group (trialling perennial pastures) and the Seaspray Serrated Tussock Project (establishing a Serrated Tussock Containment Zone). The group has also been active in delivering a small Landcare Grant planting trees and weed control and an ESSO Grant to purchase equipment to undertake weed control and tree planting. Wonyip Landcare Group Wonyip Landcare Group represent an extremely active and forward thinking group involved with everything from planning with HVP Plantations for the re-establishment of native vegetation to weed control on their own land. They get on with projects such as Weeds for Trees and have recently commenced a project linking the work with HVP to Dingo Creek planting trees and weed control. This is part of their overall aim of providing Corridors for Quolls. Won Wron/Devon North Landcare Group Members of this group have been involved for many years and are active with projects such as Recycling for Recovery re-fencing and revegetation work in fire affected areas, Salinity control, roadside weed control and projects on members properties to fence off waterways and revegtation. Alberton & Yarram ELC Alberton Primary School and Yarram Early Learning Centre are both stand alone sub-groups that have joined the Network in the past 2 years. We are delighted to be involved with these children and the wider community. Woodside Landcare Group

Woodside Landcare Group was one of the first Landcare Groups established and were instrumental in the formation of the YYLN. Members are actively involved in the Mullungdung to Coast Project (protecting remnant vegetation, connectivity corridors and cross property biodiversity planning) and the Gippsland Plains Drought Tolerant Pasture Group (trialling perennially pastures). Members are also undertaking a Coastcare funded project aimed at linking remnants to Jack Smith Lake. They are an extremely active and social group. Some groups that have contributed fundamentally to environmental change in the YYLN area are no longer active or have disbanded. These groups are remembered, respected and will hopefully be revitalised at some stage. These groups include: Alberton Landcare Group Carrajung and District Landcare group Giffard Darriman Landcare group Madalya Landcare group Tarraville Landcare group

DAVID MCANINLY Chair David is a community leader in both Landcare and local sporting associations. With his wife, Joy, he runs a large and very successful dairy farm in the Albert catchment area. For many years he has applied Landcare principles to the local area and his farming practices. His property is now a showcase for Landcare in action. HELGA BINDER Helga lives with her partner, Peter, on a beautifully lush rainforest property near the headwaters of the Albert River. She loves the strong sense of community found in Landcare. Her expertise in Graphic Design and small business has been a very welcome addition to the wide range of skills offered by other Board members. WERNER LANGE Vice Chair Werner has a long history as a Mechanical Engineer in the Agroindustrial sector supplying turnkey feedmilling, malthouse and slaughterhouse projects. He ran his own business for 10 years but has now retired with his wife, Turid, to a hobbyfarm in Wonyip. He has a passionate interest in the environment and the preservation of it. ANNE HILL With husband Peter and five children, Anne has lived and worked in Yarram for over 30yrs. She has always held strong views on sustainability and recycling and been a member of the Yarram Conservation Group, the Tarra Trail Steering Committee, Friends of the Tarra Trail and now the Yarram Urban Landcare Group. MELISSA AINSWORTH Secretary Married with two children, Melissa and her husband Justin breed Angus cattle on their farm at Stradbroke West. Melissa s career spans over fifteen years in the Natural Resource Management sector, specifically in Park Management. Her handson experience in farming and NRM bring a very valuable perspective to the Landcare Network. JOHN McCLUMPHA Raised on a dairy farm John has always had a heart for the rural areas and bush land and, after 42 years in Construction Engineering has retired to a remnant bush block on the Hedley Range in Binginwarri. His basic philosophy - that we along with all other living things are equally part of nature - encompasses the basic Landcare principles. DAVID MACAULAY Treasurer David is a local dairy farmer with a passion for the environment. He lives with his wife Sue on a gently undulating property at the foothills of the Strzelecki s and has been active in Landcare since before Landcare was even invented. He won the local Individual Landcare Award in 2011 and brings a special brand of levelheadedness to the Board. KAYE PROUDLEY Kaye with husband Roy moved from Melbourne (where she was a previous Individual Landcare Award winner) to a bush property in Binginwarri 10 years ago. She feels the many thousands of plants she has grown are her greatest contribution to the land, closely followed by hundreds of hours spent as a volunteer. The Yarram Yarram Landcare Network Board looks after the needs and requirements of the Yarram districts Landcare Groups and Sub- Groups. They do this through well researched strategic direction, active communication with the community, and excellent project management by a small, core group of staff. The YYLN has 341 member families in seven active Landcare Groups. Its members manage land from the top of the high rainfall, high fertility Strzelecki Ranges across the South Gippsland Plains and down to the coast, covering approximately 118,000ha. Its catchment area includes the Nine Mile Creek, Jack, Albert and Tarra Rivers, Bruthen and Merriman Creeks and Jack Smith Lake. The major land use industries in the region are dairy, beef, highgrade wool sheep, prime lambs and forestry. It is a credit to us all that we have had a number of State Landcare Award winners from our region.
