4 Cultural diversity and biodiversity are intimately related to each other (wwf.panda.org) We cannot understand and conserve the natural environment unless we understand the human cultures that shape it ( Cultural Diversity and Biodiversity for Sustainable Development UNESCO, UNEP) Cultural diversity comprises all expressions of human creativity and ways of life in the material, intellectual and spiritual sense

5 Cultural heritage part of cultural diversity Protecting the tangible and intangible cultural heritage means much more than ensuring the survival of cultural diversity: it means ensuring its very capacity for renewal (UNESCO, UNEP)

6 A wider understanding of heritage Cultural l heritage includes all aspects of the environment resulting from the interaction ti between people and places through time

7 Cultural landscape presents the widest and most comprehensive category of cultural heritage combined work of nature and of man UNESCO, ICOMOS

8 Landscape means an area, as perceived by people p (European Landscape Convention) Its protection, management and planning entail rights and responsibilities for everyone.

9 The quality and diversity of European landscapes constitute a common resource

10 Every person has a right to engage with the cultural heritage of their choice, while respecting the rights and freedoms of others It is necessary to involve everyone in society in the ongoing process of defining and managing cultural heritage. (Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society - the Faro Convention)

12 The main aim of the assessment is protection and enhancement of cultural heritage in Prokletije area, which contribute to strengthen local identity and culture and recognize its potentials for development, through: Identification of all heritage elements of significant and outstanding value (tangible and intangible) gathering and inventorisation of high quality data and information which will be easy accessible to public propose concrete activities iti and projects (both local l and cross-border)

13 New, broader viewing of cultural heritage, tangible and intangibe, as a part of the overall cultural landscape Participatory processes related to cultural heritage identification, protection ti and planning - the involvement of fthe local stakeholders Application of new technologies, which provides an easy accessibility of gathered information and helps to create a database that could serve as the basis for further activity Assessment seen as a part of a integrated t conservation planning process

91 Some of conclusions Significant and complex cultural heritage - even if only few cultural heritage sites have been officially protected, on a quite large and diverse area there are many other important segments of cultural heritage One of the most characteristic features of the cultural heritage of Prokletije/Bjeshkët e Namuna is its diversity Diverse cultural heritage layers have different values (cultural, historical, environmental, economic...) and represent a great resource and potential for sustainable development of the area The most valuable part of the cultural heritage of Prokletije/Bjeshkët e Nëmuna is certainly its entire cultural landscape
