RESEARCH WORK
2 PhD research project within the Tana River National Primate Reserve, titled "The Lower Tana Floodplain Forests, Kenya: Hydrologic and Edaphic Factors as Determinants of Vegetation Structure and Function". Focus of project on vegetation - environment relationships; multivariate data analysis procedures (CCA, DCA, DCCA) used to relate 18 environmental variables to 260 plant species. Interspecific associations, as well as trends in temporal change, also determined MSc research project within the Kikuyu Escarpment Forest, titled " Nutrient Cycling in a Tropical Forest Ecosystem". Focus of project on nutrient and hydrologic flux through an ecosystem, using the small watershed model. Vegetation biomass, as well as nutrient partitioning in the ecosystem, also determined BSc research project on nutrient and sediment loading into Lake Naivasha through River Malewa, and the influence of the papyrus swamp on the loading. SHORT COURSES 1993 "Tropical Managed Ecosystems", a course mounted by the Organisation for Tropical Studies in Costa Rica. As both participant and instructor. Costa Rica is recognised as a country having some of the most successful biodiversity conservation projects in the world. Focus of this field based course was on the application of ecological principles to applied problems involving conflict of development/land use and natural resource management. Experience gained included rational/sustainable utilization of natural resources, resolution of human/park conflicts, local community involvement in biodiversity conservation, biodiversity inventory (InBio), and prospecting for natural compounds. WORK EXPERIENCE 1991-DATE Lecturer, Department of Botany, Kenyatta University. Duties include teaching postgraduate and undergraduate courses, as well as supervision of postgraduate research projects. Courses taught at postgraduate level include Ecological Techniques, Advanced Botanical Techniques, Dynamics of Plant Communities, and Vegetation of East Africa. Courses taught at undergraduate level include Advanced Plant Ecology, Plant Ecology, and Aquatic Botany.
