Library Exteriors Building Design Considerations: Building Image and Appearance Massing, Scale and Form Natural Lighting/ Visibility Neighborhood Context Materials and Details Outdoor Features, Green Space
Library Exteriors Wayzata Library Hennepin County Library Beautiful Like the glass if it can be bird-safe. Like the big eaves and the Craftsman style. Like the daylight streaming in Is the large amount of glass. sustainable in all seasons? Like the design. Similar to a Frank Lloyd Wright building. Like the stone, green space and access to light. This would fit well in a residential area. This design would be a good transition from Hamilton Manor and nearby residences. Really like this one! Comments related to Webber Park project Use sustainable materials. Image #1
Library Exteriors Roosevelt Library Hennepin County Library Building fits in with the sense of the park. It fits with the trees and thrusts out to emphasize the building. Very cozy, lets in lots of light and is not cold. Fits the neighborhood feel. Neighborhood houses are smaller and this would look like it s been there a long time. Likes Arts and Crafts decoration. Boxy Comments related to Webber Park project Looks like the new bath house in Webber Park. Complement the brick used in that building. One story would fit with the neighborhood. Image #2
Library Exteriors Sumner Library Hennepin County Library Has more architectural features than Roosevelt to make it look more interesting. The building responds to its site. Image #3
Library Exteriors Nokomis Library Hennepin County Library Like the areas outside for people to gather. Use of local limestone gives it a warm appearance, even in the winter. It juts out too much. Comments related to the Webber Park project It s more modern than what I would like to see on a historical parkway. Image #4
Library Exteriors Augsburg Park Library Hennepin County Library Doesn t like the roofline. It would not fit in our neighborhood. Nice interior features like the wooden ceiling. Librarians said it was cold near the windows. The back side of the building is important too. Building has four faces. Ample parking for cars and buses. Nice to have green space. The color of the glass is unwelcoming and unfriendly Comments related to the Webber Park project: Would like a modest amount of lighting still have a presence in our neighborhood. Do we get a drive-up bookdrop? Would like green space facing 44 th Ave. N. Image #5
Library Exteriors Washburn Library Hennepin County Library Likes the architectural detail on the building. It gives the building character and distinction. The large forms give the building a sense of importance. Landmark quality. Would the dome on the north side complement the historic parkway? Comments related to the Webber Park project: Increase library hours. Needs a community meeting space that can be closed off. Exterior should complement the granite monument on the historic parkway. Include granite in the library s design. Image #6
Library Exteriors Duvall Library King County Library System, WA Use of wood is quite interesting. Historically, there were many sawmills in the Webber/Camden neighborhoods. Like the large overhang for people who are waiting for rides during inclement weather. Looks like it should be near a mountain or lake. Image #7
Library Exteriors Jasper Place Branch Library Edmonton, Alberta Not a good fit. Too contemporary. Image #8
Library Exteriors Sam Gary Branch Denver Public Library Image #9 Looks too much like a retail outlet. Likes the overhangs to shade the glass Comments related to the Webber Park project: What sustainable features will be used at Webber Park?
Library Exteriors Anacostia Neighborhood Library, Washington, D.C. Looks like a gas station. Overhang is good for bike parking. Comments related to the Webber Park project: Will there be a drive-up bookdrop? Image #10
Library Exteriors Oak Forest Neighborhood Library, Houston Like the courtyard area with the overhang and protected area. Like being able to gather outdoors. Children and teens can learn about native Minnesota plants in an outdoor area like this. Link library programming with Minneapolis Park Board-Webber Park programming. Comments related to the Webber Park project: Use sustainable Prairie Style landscaping Green space is important. Keep natural and sustainability in mind. Image #11
Library Exteriors Boise Public Library - Idaho No comment. Image #12
Library Exteriors Ballard Library Seattle Public Library Looks like the Viking Stadium and the Sydney Opera House. Image #13
Library Exteriors Washoe County Library, Nevada Like the use of wood and the outside lighting. Good place to put a coffee shop. Image #14
Library Exteriors Woodneath Library Center Kansas City, MO Too modern compared with the building next door. Image #15 Comments related to the Webber Park project: Don t ignore balancing the building with the neighborhood.
Library Exteriors Whistler Public Library Design by Hughes Condon Marler Architects Love the rock with the birch trees. Absolutely gorgeous like the landscaping and stucco. Boulders are attractive and would serve as deterrents to cars. Like the rugged quality of the boulders, the massiveness of the rock and the complementary wood. Let s think about a water feature. Comments related to the Webber Park project: Boulders provide a reference to the parkway and Mississippi River. They provide a transition point in the landscape. Instead of boulders, use limestone. Limestone mines were once located in the area. Include railroad history on the interior especially in the children s area.
Library Exteriors Francis A. Gregory Neighborhood Library in Washington, D. C, by Adjaye Associates. Like the geometric reflection of the neighborhood in the glass the glass is not as much of a separation. A more creative use of glass. Like the large eaves overhang.
Library Exteriors Outdoor Space- Dubois Library Should have outdoor seating within sight of the library.

Where We Are Today
Site Context: Kevin Dockry, Assistant Director for Hennepin County Public Works Housing, Community Works and Transit Department. Hennepin County will issue a Request for Information (RFI) in early September to determine if there are development opportunities for Parcel B on the library site. Parcel B is the portion of the site that faces 44 th Avenue North with the old grocery store and parking lot. Potential uses may be housing, retail or an art incubator. An open house will be held in October to display potential ideas for the site. Consider shared parking between the library and the development on Parcel B. The library is the priority. The RFI will take the temperature of interest in the site. Planning will continue for the library while the RFI is being considered. Site control is a strong tool to use with public property. Sale conditions will include county approval of the design and compatibility of use. Committee member comments: The north side needs development. Should the City or County take the lead for economic development? What s next? Planning work will continue on the library site. (See the Project Timeline below.) Open House in October to see RFI proposals. Community Advisory Committee meetings will be scheduled after the open house. Additional Committee comments: Flexible use of the meeting rooms is important. Acoustics is very important element of the building s design. Library budget will be finalized at the end of the schematic design phase. Library size will be determined in the pre-design phase. Appreciates calling in the New Webber Park Library. How will we involve teens in the planning?
