New possibilities with LED Technology for dynamic light in Public Places Prof. Thomas Römhild Hochschule Wismar
Who am I? Prof. Dr.- Ing. Thomas Römhild Hochschule Wismar Architectural Lighting Design Architect, Lighting Designer
LED Technology Characteristics of LED light sources: Quelle: LG LED is an electronic device, it can be directly integrated in any electronic equipment!
LED Technology Characteristics of LED light sources: Quelle: LG lesser in size! this means an easy integration in complex systems or to create more challenging luminaries
LED Technology Characteristics of LED light sources: precise optical instrument made by Lenses this means light easy to govern by free- form refractor, Fresnell- lenses made by plastic material
LED Technology Characteristics of LED light sources: precise optical instrument made by reflectors this means light easy to govern By a high number of differentiated reflectors
LED Technology Characteristics of LED light sources: Different colour temperatures with a good colour rendering are possible This means easily adaptable light changes are possible in one luminaire
LED Technology Characteristics of LED light sources: Coloured light is possible, this means changeable light colours are available! Losses of Light and Energy caused by filters are avoidable
LED Technology LED are dimmable and quick switchable that means the light can be easily adjusted
LED Technology Characteristics of LED light sources: LED are already efficient and become even better! But best is to use them in new system of lighting! Quelle: DOE SSL R&D Program Plan
LED pros; How to use them? LED as an electronic device makes new dynamic light solutions possible, which are unknown until today Combing the change of light distribution, colour temperature and the intensity.
LED pros; How to use them? Combing the change of light distribution by using different lenses and reflectors, colour temperature by using different LED in one Luminaire and influencing the intensity by dimming
LED pros; control capabilities New sensors recognising situations
LED pros; control capabilities New sensors recognising situations allow to design the light
LED pros; control capabilities New sensors recognising situations allow to design the light according to the actual behaviour and the visual and social needs deduced from how people act
LED pros; control capabilities Efficacy would mean: As dynamik as possible! Quelle: mercedes benz passion-blog People would ask: How much change is appropriate? Regarding perception constanty and the feeling of security, etc! What is plesant and acceptable? What makes sense?
LED Pro: More exact light distribution Design advantages: Light, where it is needed Pros: less light tresspass, less light scatter Cons: high contrasts, harsh shadows, direct glare seems to be stronger
Genaue Trennung von unbeleuchtet und beleuchtet
Differentiation in intensity and illuminated focus points Scattered light combined - with lit focus points allows a good orientation, which helps to feel secure, knowing: - Where am I going?
Anonymous traffic lighting versus identity
Anonymous traffic lighting versus identity
Many small light sources provide many challenges, combine the possibilities
Light distribution Multi Spot characteristic Many LED in one luminare provide many possibilities If you don't use all LED in one time, it will be possible to create different light situations with one luminaire: for example: LED with differnet lenses or refractors (wide or narrow light distrubution) LED with different colour temperatures to have other light in the evening the in the morning)
Light distribution Multi Spot characteristic Verschiedene Lichtzonen sind auch einer Leuchte möglich Beispiel: Straße anderes Beleuchtungsniveau als der Fahradweg Straße Gehweg
Light distribution Multi Spot characteristic Quelle: Philips
Old technology few variations
Various colour temperatures
Verschieden farbiges Licht mit hoher Intensität möglich Change of colours during the operation differnt colours from one luminaire acording to the differnt design solutions.
Various colour temperatures For example: Street and pedestrian area lit in different intensity and colour temperatures Straße Gehweg
Various colour temperatures
Various colour temperatures
One Luminaire various functions Qualification for dynamic lighting is to have a variety of lighting possibilities Condition for dynamic lighting is to have the need for for different light scenes
One Luminaire various functions Function 1: wide light Function 2: narrow light Function 3: warmwhite Function 4: focus point A + B Funktion 2: narrow light Funktion 1: wide light
Five in one Multifunktionsleuchte für Hamburg Mönckebergstraße (T.Schlothfeld/ Iguzzini)
Rostock : Parc Am Schwanenteich New luminaire design Good light distribution Various colour temperatures Reduced light trespass, more ark sky

Master plan: Wismar old city centre Ring street and entrances It is needed to have marks by lighting on the ring where the streets come into Altstadt. Coldest light colour for the ring and the main entrances. Intersections highest light level of the Altstadt (100%). Ringstreet 3/4 as bright as the main intersections (75%). Two types of luminaires with different heights for cars and pedestrians. Colour temperatu re Light level 100 % 75 %

Conclusion: In future it will be possible to integrate more Functions in on luminaire, this will give the chance to to adapt the light to: - different sittuations of use - different times of the day or the year - different climatic conditions! LED technology will make it possible to to adjust the light more exact to the constant architectonical, but also to changing behavioural situation. LED-technology will be flexible also for future situations, because of the controll systems!
