6 Descriptions 1A. Modern social systems stress human and environmental health. Social systems which value resilient living practices, e.g., sustainable building and organic agriculture can contribute to improvements in individual quality of life and living within ecological boundaries. To plan for this type of sustainable future we need to integrate these values into the dominant social paradigm. 1B. Our panel highlights community engagement for the purpose of reducing the environmental impact of development, assisting in economic transitions, and preserving cultural identity in communities around the American West. The three projects are workin g to pivot from BAU in public lands, food systems, and energy production to commanding the future for lasting community. 2A. This panel s focus is on the importance of collaboration between stakeholders (public agencies, and non-profit organizations). Recognizing that education is a key component to bridge gaps in knowledge and awareness, we explore solutions that mitigate risks and promote ecological resilience. Each presenter addresses communities directly in an effort to draw them closer to core issues. 2B. Recreation is a vital component of Colorado's past, present, and future economy. As population and visitation are projected to increase, how can current management practices inform future decisions on public lands? Our projects will address visita tion characteristics, legal mandates, and collaborative efforts on the western slope of Colorado. 3A. Communication strategies are often overlooked in environmental efforts. This panel focuses on promoting environmental change through tailored messaging tactics. These communication approaches can be adapted from a local to a global level. 3B. Landscapes have been severely disturbed and are under constant stress from climate change and human development. Our projects aim to measure, inform, and mitigate habitat stressors. We are working with public land managers to collect data and create programs that will inform land management decisions in the face of increasing land use and climate change. 5A. This panel focuses on promoting philosophies and lifestyles that encourages the redesigning of resource life cycles from materials extraction to disposal while engaging the public and influencing policy changes on local levels. 5B. Radical education is a teaching approach that energizes the participants to have agency and power over issues in their lives. The projects in this panel will use a form of radical education to empower communities to achieve authentic social sustainability. 6A. Gaps in communication need to be assessed in order to build cohesive sustainability and environmental plans. Members of this group are exploring these gaps and the potential linkages between various scales. 6B. We are looking at the benefits of building resilience in riparian systems to return ecosystem function and create service learning in small Colorado mountain towns. By assessing and repairing landscapes impacted by mining, water diversions, drought and grazing, we will be empowering communities by engaging volunteers and educating them about the natural environment.
