1 Santa Clara Valley Orchid Society Established 1951 Helping You to Become a Better Grower April 2011 SCVOS Newsletter (please note that links in electronic copies are functional) Speaker Notes For April our speaker will be Debra Atwood on Reading Your Roots Examining the roots can reveal different aspects of culture and overall health of your orchid. This lecture focuses on how to use this information to understand the cultural requirements, watering techniques, potting mixtures and repotting frequencies. Napa Valley Orchids was started in March 2001 by third generation Napan Debra Atwood. In addition to growing a greenhouse full of beautiful orchids, primarily species, she also consults, is a regular speaker at orchid societies and garden clubs, and in addition, performs greenhouse maintenance for a handful of clients. She has also taught orchid classes for many years, and still conducts orchid workshops as time allows. Summers you will find her at the St. Helena farmers' market, and winter is show season, with 7 to 9 shows a year. Currently Debra grows Angraecoids, species Phalaenopsis, Neofinetias, Maxillarias, and what ever else catches her fancy. Her greenhouse maintains an intermediate temperature range, and her plants thrive in the Mediterranean climate of Napa Valley. Her orchid nursery, Napa Valley Orchids, is open most days by appointment. Call or C. gaskelliana Blue Dragon AM/AOS Presidents Corner President Christina Bell would like to thank all those who worked at our annual show. A lot of effort went into the show and it was a great success. Show chairs Tim Culbertson and Eanghak Quach did a wonderful job and are to be commended. This is probably going to be Tim s last show, he is moving out of state, and he will be missed by all. Also mentioned was Sandi Fox for ordering the green aprons and printing the SCVOS business cards. They were a great success. March Meeting On Wednesday March 2, 2011 our meeting featured Tim Culbertson speaking on Paphiopedilum maudiae. Tim gave us a lot of information on the history of Paph. Maudiae. Did you know that maudiae came from just two plants which were the only ones known at the time. They produced a seed pod and all the maudiae available today are related to those two plants. They were bred before growers knew how to germinate seeds in a growing medium in the lab. The seeds were germinated by placing them around a growing plant. This is not a trusted method and we are all lucky we can enjoy Paph. Maudiae today. Tim s presentation gave us an entertaining and informative evening 1

6 "#$%&'()*"'+&' Orchid Facts Laelia (L.) is a genus of mostly epiphytic and, sometimes, lithophytic orchids found mostly in subtropical or temperate Central America, mostly Mexico. This genus enjoys importance and popularity in orchid culture due to the beauty of their flowers, as well as, genetic properties that they readily impart their progeny; not to mention being fairly easy to grow. Laelia culture is highly dependent on the particular natural habitat requirements of the species in question. Many species of the genus need a welldefined wet and dry cycle mimicking the natural climactic changes. Laelia speciosa is the type species. (photo courtesy of IOSPE) Laelias, in general, are used to breed for long stems in Cattleya hybrids. The stem of the Laelia anceps can reach a length of more than a yard long. Below is a list of more popular Laelia intergeneric hybrids. Brassolaeliacattleya (Blc.) = Brassavola x Laelia x CattleyaDialaelioca ttleya (Dialc.) = Cattleya x Diacrium x LaelEpilaeliocattle ya (Eplc.) = Cattleya x Epidendrum x Laelia There are two possibilities about the origin of the genus name. One is it is named after Laelia, one of the Vestal Virgins. The other is that Laelia is the name for the female members of the Roman patrician family of Laelius. It was first described by John Lindley in The Laelia genus is closely related to the Cattleya genus, but differs from it by having twice as many pollinia. Members of this genus have been classified and reclassified into other genera, namely: Amalia, Bletia, Cattleya, Epidendrum, Hoffmannseggella, and Schomburkgia. Hawkinsara (Hknsa.) = Broughtonia x Cattleya x Laelia x Sophro nitis Iwanagara (Iwan.) = Brassavola x Diacrium x Cattleya x Laelia Johnyeeara (Jya.) = Brassavola x Laelia x Cattleya x Sophroni tis x Epidendrum x Schomburgkia Kirchara (Kir.) = Cattleya x Epidendrum x Laelia x Sophro nitis Laeliocatonia (Lctna.) = Broughtonia x Cattleya x Laelia Laeliocattleya (Lc.) = Laelia x Cattleya Lyonara (Lyon.) = Cattleya x Laelia x Schomburgkia Otaara (Otr.) = Brassavola x Broughtonia x Cattleya x La elia Potinara (Pot.) = Brassavola x Cattleya x Laelia x Sophroni tis Recchara (Recc.) = Brassavola x Cattleya x Laelia x Schombu rgkia Rothara (Roth.) = Brassavola x Cattleya x Epidendrum x La elia x SophronitisSophrolaeliocattleya (Slc.) = Cattleya x Laelia x Sophronitis Yamadara (Yam.) = Brassavola x Cattleya x Epidendrum x La el 6
