Education and qualifications: Vienna University of Technology, Austria (Oct 2009 Apr 2015) Ph.D. under ASEA-UNINET's Grant Thesis title: An analysis of Chiang Mai city s transport system and its path towards sustainability, with a focus on the role of the motorcycle and the shared-taxi This thesis approaches the urban transport problems in a more holistic manner, using qualitative and quantitative tools in System Dynamics. The results demonstrated the complexities and the difficulties faced in formulating suitable solutions. It was found promotion of these modes to maximise potential improvements to the system s sustainability resulted in localised improvement, but led to overall aggravations within the system in the longer term. This difficulty was also examined using Causal Loop Diagram (CLD) methodologies to simulate the interactions between different entities when reviewing the effects of perceived solutions promulgated by local decision makers responsible for Chiang Mai s transport system. The assessment shows a wide gap between the perceptions of decision makers and the reality. This thesis has provided qualitative and quantitative tools to support city transport decision making. It has shown the manner in which an effective, sustainable solution can be reached. It has thus accomplished important milestones, which can be built upon. Moreover, it has collected mobility data of more than 2,300 households, which can be used to form a basis for any further analysis.
