1. SAFETY ADVICE Work on electrical equipment may only be carried out by qualified electrician's (per VBG4) or through our trained technicians! With the combination of equipment as well as the repair of electrical parts the relevant regulations must be observed (VDE 0100, 0107, 0751, IEC 601-1, UVV-VBG Abroad the relevant regulations must be observed, e.g. IEC, CEE). With repairs only use original spare parts otherwise the guarantee and test certification will be invalidated. The Combi-Separator is, according the medical equipment regulations (MedGV) a Group III apparatus, an energy driven medico-technical unit. 1.1 Electrical safety checks When installing and commissioning, servicing, maintaining and repairing electrical equipment, an electrical safety check as per IEC 601-1, VDE 0751 must be carried out. The test results are then recorded and stored safely. 2. PURPOSE OF THE COMBI- SEPARATOR Through the suction system there are aspirated, amongst other things, heavy metals mainly from drilled out old amalgam fillings. The amalgam entering the drainwater this way is difficult to degrade biologicaly. To reduce the heavy metal load of the drainwater from the dental unit it is necessary to comply with the 'Goverment regulations for waste water' (Appendix 50, Dental Treatment). An amalgam separator, with a test certificate from the Institute for Construction Engineering, Berlin, is required to be fitted into the drain. With the Combi-Separator 7100 DÜRR Dental has developed such a unit with a separation efficiency of more than 95% with a flow rate of approx. 5 l/min. The amalgam sludge is collected in an amalgam collecting vessel. Depending on the amount collected, the container is changed 1-2 times a year. 3. 5 4. FUNCTION DESCRIPTION Please consult the front fold-in page for the function description. 4.1 Mode of operation The task of the Combi-Separator model 7110 is the continuous separation of the aspirated as well as separating amalgam from the drain of the dental unit. During the suction procedure the aspirated substances and liquids are separated in the separation area (26) from the aspirated air. The drain water collected in the separation area (26) passes continuously to the centrifuge (13) where the amalgam particles are segregated. Via a shut-off valve (9) the drain water from the spittoon flows directly into the centrifuge (13) for amalgam separation. Underneath the centrifuge (13) an exchangeable collecting vessel (20) is fitted, into which the separated amalgam particles (19) are rinsed after switching off the centrifuge (13). A sensor (17) checks the level in the collecting vessel (20) and signals on the control panel (43) indicate when this must be changed. A safe turnlock system makes the exchange and closure of the collecting vessel (20) easy. The compact design of the Combi-Separator makes the fitting into dental units possible, whereby short secretion lines can be realised. The robust construction of the Combi- Separator ensures dependable function. After switching off the centrifuge a brake cycle causes a self cleaning effect. It is extremely quiet running and reaches a separation rate of more than 95% even during work load peaks. 4.2 Aspiration At the inlet connector (11) the aspirated secretion / air mixture is accelerated and then sent into a spiral motion in the cyclonic separator (27). The resulting centrifugal energy forces the aspirated matter to the outer wall. The air separates itself continuously from the secretion and escapes via the rotating rotor (12) and the diaphragm valve (29) to the suction machine. The rotor (12) driven by the motor (1) makes sure as a second stage separation that no secretion or bloodfoam is swept into the suction machine. The spiral like movement guides the separated secretion continuously into the centrifuge (13). The place selector valve (28) activates the diaphragm valve (29) and connects the separator via the vacuum connection (25) with the suction machine. 4.3 Spittoon bowl valve The waste water from the spittoon bowl flows via a safety valve (5) into the collecting vessel (6). The float (3) determines the level at which the Reed switch (2) is activated and switches the motor (1) on. The electronic control activates the solenoid valve (8) so that incoming compressed air (7) opens the shutoff valve (9). The liquid goes directly into the centrifuge (13). If during this procedure the suction system is not in operation, the liquid will flow into the centrifuge (13) by gravity only. If during this procedure the suction system is in operation, the cut-off valve (9) prevents loud slurping noises in the spittoon. By aspirating fluid from the collecting vessel (6) the float (3) sinks down and operates the Reed switch (2). The solenoid valve (8) interrupts the compressed air supply (7) and closes the cutoff valve (9). Before switching off the motor (1), after closing the membrane valve (29), the solenoid valve (8) is briefly activated. The cut-off valve (9) opens so that the remaining fluid can flow out of the collecting vessel (6) without pressure and into the centrifuge (13). 4.4 Amalgam separation The switch in the hose holder or the Reed switch (2) in the spittoon valve switches the centrifuge (13) on. Via the separation area (26) or the cut-off valve (9) the fluid containing amalgam particles flows continuously into the centrifuge (13). The centrifuged fluid is pumped via the waste water valve (24) and waste water connection (21) into the central drainage system. 5

If the suction hoses are returned to the holder or no fluid comes via the spittoon valve into the separator, the centrifuge (13) switches off. When switching off, the motor (1) brakes, so through inertia the rotating waterring rinses the separated particles out of the centrifuge (13) downwards into the collecting vessel. The separated particles (19) sediment in the exchangeable collecting vessel (20) which is fastened with a turnlock action on the separator. A pump (18) which is connected to the centrifuge (13) keeps the fluid at a constant level in the collecting vessel (29). A spillage of fluid during changing of collecting vessel (20) is thereby avoided. 4.5 Monitoring the fluid level The fluid level of the collecting vessel (20) is checked whenever switching on the main switch by a feeler gauge (17). The coil (15) releases the feeler gauge action, during which the feeler gauge (17) sinks downward through gravity. The filling level is monitored by light barriers (14) and a 95% full level is indicated on the control panel (43). If the collecting vessel (20) is 95% full with amalgam sludge (19), the green light (44) on the control panel (43) appears as well as a permanently glowing yellow signal (41). Additionally a hooting sound (42) occurs, which can be cancelled by pressing key (40). Then the Combi-Separator is again "READY FOR USE". The yellow indicator (41) remains lit as reminder information to change collecting vessel. After every switching on of the mains switch the "nearly full" indication is repeated. With a 100% full level the green signal (44) and yellow signal (41) are permanently lit, the orange signal (45) blinks and the hooter (42) sounds which cannot be cancelled by pressing key (40). The separation unit will not function until a new collecting vessel (20) has been inserted and the machine is again "READY FOR USE". 4.6 Rinsing unit The rinsing unit has the task to constantly add a little water (0,1-0,2 l/min.) to the suction system and the combi-separator during the work procedure. 6 Through this, mainly during longer treatment sessions, the coagulation of blood and the formation of difficult to remove deposits in the suction system is prevented. For this fresh water flows via the water connection (38) into the container (34) whilst the float (35) ascertains the water level. The inflowing water lifts the float (35) and opens the Reed switch (36). Through this the water valve (39) stops the water supply. The negative pressure in the suction system aspirates the water from the container (34) via the rinsing connections (32) into the hose holder. If the hose holder has no rinsing connections present, the aspirated water is led directly into the Combi-Separator via rinsing connection (10) at the entry connection piece (11). Surplus water flows through the connector stem (33) via the drain connection (21) into the main drainage system. A non-return valve (23) prevents the possibility of waste water from the centrifuge (13) flowing back into the rinsing unit via the drain connection piece (22). 4.7 Operating fault If the Combi-Separator is out of order through a technical fault, the fault indicator is activated. In this case the orange indicator (45) lights up on the control panel (43). Additionally a hooting sound (42) occurs which can be cancelled by pressing key (40). The indication "FAULT" can appear when the motor (1) is defective via a light barrier (30) at the motor ventilator (31) or by not inserting the collecting vessel (20) through microswitch (16) in the receiver of the collecting vessel (20). 4.8 Service key If the Service key (40) is pressed for longer than 2 secs., the centrifuge (13) starts and opens the cut-off valve (9) at the spittoon. If during this procedure the suction system is activated through lifting the suction hose(s), the connection between spittoon and Combi- Separator lets itself be cleaned, disinfected and aspirated this way. If the orange light (45) indicates a "FAULT" on the control panel, the combi-separator can be started manually by pressing the Service key (40) for a min. of 2 secs. If after pressing the Service key (40) several times and each time the fault indicator remains lit, a technical fault is present.

6. INSTALLATION ADVICE 6.1 Laying of hoses Drain hoses (see point 5.11) from the Combi- Separator must be laid on a decline. 6.2 Hose material For the suction system and water drain only the following must be used: PVC spiral hoses or similar. Not to be used are: Hoses which are not durable against medicaments and solutions used in the dental surgery. 6.3 Pipe dimensioning Vacuum pipeline endpiece at base DN40 Water drainpipe connection DN40 (Laid as per DIN 1986) Combi-Separator hose dimensions see point Odour seal Behind the Combi-Separator is fitted an odour trap (siphon) to DIN INSTALLATION ADVICE 7.1 Installation of the Combi-Separator into existing or new dental units The Combi-Separator is mounted on a flanged plate with rubber buffers to absorb any vibration in use and allow a 3mm gap for ventilation when suspended within the dental unit. After this the inflow and drainage hoses are pushed onto the relevant nozzle on the separator and secured. To prevent localized build up of heat ensure that the Unit has sufficient ventilation. 7.2 Electrical connection The electrical connection must always be made via the main switch of the dental unit or the Surgery main switch. The cables for the electrical connection of the Combi-Separator must be laid without any mechanical tension! V model The electrical connection (230V) for the drive motor is made at suitable terminals behind the main switch of the dental unit. CSA size: 0,75mm² The electrical connection (24V) for the controler (required power 17VA) can be via the transformer of the dental unit or a separate transformer. CSA size: 0,5mm² V model The electrical connections of the Combi- Separator 24V model can be made via a transformer (24V / 160VA) behind the main switch of the dental unit on suitable terminals. CSA size: 1,5mm² Control panel The control panel should be fitted in an easily visible position for the attendant and is connected by a 6 core cable to the Combi- Separator. The cable to the control panel of the Combi-Separator should be laid without mechanical tension! 7.3 Rinsing connection With hose manifolds which cannot be rinsed If the combi-separator is built into a Dental Unit with a hose manifold which cannot be rinsed, the connection between the rinsing unit and secretion entry, is maintained,as at time of delivery. 9

7.3.2 With hose manifold which can be rinsed If the Combi-Separator is built into a dental unit with a hose manifold that can be rinsed (e.g. DÜRR Eco. or Selective holder) then these can be connected to the Rinsing unit of the Combi-Separator. In which case, the rinsing hose supplying the secretion entry nozzle is pulled off and sealed with a black cap (e.g. pushing on a black cap from the rinsing unit). 8. CONTROL FUNCTIONS 8.1 Sediment and function check of the control panel Switch on Combi-Separator, at the same time observe whether light diode H8 [Sediment key coil] lights up. At the end of the scanning procedure the lit diode H8 must go out. The green indicator "Ready for use" on the control panel lights up. If no scanning sound of the sediment monitor (17) is heard, check scanner and if necessary change it. 8.2 Suction Lift suction hose. Combi-Separator starts. (Light diode H3 [Hose manifold] on the electronic control lights up). Put back hose in holder. After approx. 12 secs. the centrifuge motor stops (H5 extinguished). 8.3 Spittoon valve Switch on spittoon bowl flush. The Combi- Separator starts. Observe light diode H6 [Spittoon bowl valve] (It shines permanently or pulses, depending on the inflow amount of water). Parallel to this, note light diode H4 [Reed switch for spittoon valve] for pulsing light. Turn off spittoon bowl water supply and wait until Combi-Separator switches off. Check the function of the Reed switch sensor and spittoon bowl valve and whether air pressure for the spittoon valve is present. 8.4 Aspirating the connection hose between Separator and Spittoon Lift suction hose. Switch on spittoon bowl flush. Press key (40) on control panel for at least 2 secs. Now the spittoon bowl valve opens and the connection hose between the spittoon and Combi-Separator is aspirated empty (suction sound audible at spittoon). 8.5 Monitoring motor Switch off power supply. Block motor rotation by pushing suitable instrument in between ventilator fan blades (e.g. screwdriver). Switch on power supply and Combi- Separator starts - after approx. 2 secs. the orange indicator (45) lights up on the control panel and a warning sound is heard. By pressing key (40) on the control panel the warning sound is switched off. Switch off power supply and remove instrument from fan blade. Should during this check the motor monitor not react, check the light barriers for monitoring the motor and the electronic PC panel and, if necessary, change it. 8.6 Visual check Check connections, hoses and Combi- Separator for any leakages and, if necessary, repair same. 8.7 Cleaning safety sieve The safety sieve (5) which is situated in front of the reservoir (6) of the spittoon valve should, when changing the collecting vessel, be cleaned or changed for new one. 10

9. MAINTENANCE According to the amount collected in the amalgam container it is changed 1-2 times a year. 9.1 Annual check of the control panel indicators The testing must be carried out by appropriately trained personnel. The following accessory is required for the test: 1 Test container Checking the green indicator (44): After switching on the main switch, the green indicator lights up, i.e. the machine is "READY FOR USE" Checking the orange indicator (45) and key (40): - Remove collecting vessel, now the orange indicator lights up and hooter sounds. By pressing key (40) the hooting ceases and the orange indicator blinks continuously. To avoid the risk of infection we recommend the wearing of waterproof gloves when changing collecting vessels. (VGB 5 u. 7). Checking the yellow indicator (41): - Switch OFF main switch. - Remove collecting vessel and insert test container, secure it and set filling level to 100%. - Switch ON main switch. Now the yellow indicator glows after the sediment test has been made. The orange indicator blinks and the hooter sounds. - Switch OFF main switch. - Remove test container - Insert collecting vessel and secure. Insert test results into log-book Required tools and apparatus: 1 Crosshead screwdriver 1 Test container 1 Measuring beaker Remove collecting vessel. When doing this the orange light diode (45) on the control panel must blink and the hooting sound occurs. By pressing key (40) on the control panel the hooting stops. Insert test container. Press key (40) on the control panel (Green signal "Ready for use" lights up again). Switch on spittoon bowl flush and keep on until the Combi-Separator motor starts running, then the spittoon bowl flush can be switched off again. After the machine has switched off, remove collecting vessel and pour the water into a measuring jug. If the content is more than 70ml: the Combi-Separator is in good working order. A Service log-book must be kept recording all maintenance work. For this see "Service log-book DÜRR Amalgam Separator", no Routine 5 Year test inspection It is strangely advised by manufacturer to have this test carried out every 5 years. 11
