Chemical disinfectants are subject to statutory restrictions, often produce a number of undesirable side effects and are expensive. 7 6 On the track of nature Short wave ultraviolet rays (UV) belong to the group of optical rays, but are invisible to the human eye. UV radiation in the C range has a strong germicidal effect in the area of 260 nm. The elimination rate is subject to the dose response principle, therefore the technical characteristics of the tube output and the irradiation period are crucial for reliable UVC disinfection. The operating principle is subject to a photochemical reaction in the exposed cell: if two thymines are adjacent in the DNA strand, they react and form a dimer, which is unusable for duplication and transcription. In the event of repeated damage, the cell is no longer capable of regenerating. It loses its ability to divide and multiply it dies off. 9 8 Simulation and calculation Bactericidal UVC radiation can be most economically generated with Hg lowpressure tubes. Around 35 percent of the supplied energy and 90 percent of the emitted radiation is released in the bactericidally effective wavelength range of 254 nm. As with all gas discharge tubes, the output of UVC emitters is also significantly reduced if the temperature of the tube surface deviates from a defined optimum. Knowledge of specific performance parameters of different tube types under the directly influencing variables of air or water cooling is therefore absolutely crucial for effective and reliable UV disinfection. Secondary factors such as reflection and installation method are just as important as knowledge of the lethal dose (LD 90) of the target microorganisms and the desired disinfection rate. A sound and reliable system design should therefore always be produced using a computer-aided 3D calculation.

10 9 Simulation Input of parameters Result with lamp positioning Arrangement of radiation units A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation shows the optimal positioning of the UVC tubes, installed transversely to the air flow. The turbulent intermixing of the air results in homogeneous exposure of all airborne germs in the highly effective close-up range of the tubes. The calculated UVC dose is thus ensured for all germs in the irradiated air volume.

12 11 Air Air Compliance with established hygiene standards cannot reliably prevent the spread of spores, bacteria and viruses. In comfort air conditioning infections and respiratory problems are the logical consequence, whilst in technical air conditioning the spread of microorganisms results in mould attacks or product impairments. This is where the sterilair UVC disinfection system comes in: air disinfection chambers (UVC barrier) in the central air duct inactivate microorganisms highly effectively, without loss of pressure. Easily mountable UVC modules in the area of the filters efficiently prevent the colonisation or even intergrowth of the filter bags. Cooling registers remain free from biofilms, thanks to UVC rays. For buildings without central air conditioning sterilair also offers a multitude of highly developed wall and ceiling units, or unit series for the disinfection of recirculating air. 13 12 ESD / ESD flex Plug-in modules for HVAC systems The ESD-type modular units for UVC air flow disinfection function as effective bactericidal disinfection barrier with almost no air resistance in air conditioning systems. They can also easily be retrofitted into existing air conditioning systems. The corrosion resistant and moisture proof units are installed directly in the air duct using mounting plates. The stainless steel modules are available as rigid or flexible systems (ESD flex). They contain a particularly energy saving electronic ballast for two tubes. When designing an individual disinfection system, parameters such as air speed, duct size and temperature, as well as the desired disinfection rate, are defined. Availability of a variety of special tubes enables us to provide solutions for different requirements. Optionally, the system can easily be connected to the building automation PLC. 15 14 EFM / EFD Versatile flange solution The flexible plug-in system was primarily designed for external installation in containers (water tanks) or chambers (air ducts). The provision of an inspection opening into the radiation chamber is no longer essential. The absolute plus factor of this system is its extreme versatility: thanks to the watertight IP 68 design, it is suitable for many OEM solutions in plant engineering. The EF series is available as a single tube unit (EFM) and a double tube unit (EFD), as well as with different power ratings (18 watts to 58 watts). All essential parts of the high quality disinfection system are made of stainless steel and the system is delivered as a ready to install kit. The tubes are inserted by means of a threehole threaded flange. The supply electronics is connected to the module by a metre long connecting cable. It is protected from moisture and access in a stainless steel square tube with mounting plates. 17 16 LKV Fan coil disinfector for air coolers The sterilair LKV series has become firmly established as an effective solution for the disinfection of air coolers, evaporators and refrigeration units. The UVC rays are specifically focused onto critical points through special stainless steel reflectors. This enables maximum radiation effectiveness with simultaneous protection of any people present. The UVC treatment prevents biofilm from forming on the cooling fins. Bacteria, yeasts and even moulds are continuously inactivated. As a result the cooling capacity remains at a constantly high level and the maintenance intervals for the plant are considerably extended. The modular system can be used for all standard air coolers. The compact design enables simple and unproblematic installation, without affecting the calculated air ducting of the units. The high quality ballast is sealed in a stainless steel square tube and therefore effectively protected from dust and humidity. 19 18 UVR Industrial recirculating air disinfection unit The sterilair UVR recirculating air disinfection system serves for air disinfection in rooms with low convection, where direct emission must be avoided under all circumstances. Typical applications are production, packaging and maturing rooms, as well as cold stores. The corrosion protected axial fan has a maximum capacity of 450 m 3 / hour. As the air in the reaction chamber is subject to turbulent conduction, the UVR with four UV tubes is able to apply a very high dose to the exposed microorganisms and is even able to inactivate particularly resistant mould spores. The core of the moisture proof unit comprises a stainless steel tube and it is suspended at two mounting points. The UVR can be disassembled into its various components quickly and easily for cleaning or maintenance purposes. 21 20 LSK Laboratory recirculating air disinfection unit The LSK series of recirculating air units serves to disinfect the room air in areas where direct UV emission must be avoided under all circumstances. Whether laboratory workplaces, recreation rooms or offices: The system safely and reliably inactivate all forms of vegetative and generative microorganisms. Two integrated high capacity tubes emit approximately 20 watts of pure UVC254nm energy, with minimal power consumption. In addition, the integrated reflectors and special air ducting guarantee maximum microbicidal effect against all pathogens. The sterilair LSK series of recirculating air units is characterised by an extremely low noise emission and does not disturb your working environment. 23 22 WR Upper-room wall emitter with protection grille The WR series serves for continuous disinfection of the room air in laboratories, sanitary facilities, work and production areas. The concentrated UV radiation in the overhead area allows day and night use, without endangering any persons present. Airborne microorganisms can be eliminated highly effectively with this system; mutation related resistance is excluded, as with all UV disinfection systems. sterilair WR systems are the perfect choice for rooms that do not have very high air change rates and have a ceiling height of 2.40 metres or more. 25 24 WB Wall emitter for high rooms The sterilair WB unit series was primarily designed for use in rooms with high ceilings or cold stores and storage rooms. Absolutely quiet and highly effective, the wall emitting device inactivates all sorts of bacteria, viruses and mould spores present in the air. As a positive secondary effect in cold stores, the regular cleaning requirement for evaporators and refrigeration units is considerably reduced by the UVC treatment. This elegant system is equipped with a special reflector which optimises the radiation yield into the room, without direct UV emission below the installation height. 27 26 D / DB Room hygiene overnight D series: Ceiling emitters in the D series are primarily used in production areas and laboratories for surface disinfection and simultaneous disinfection of the room air overnight. The UVC source used by these emitters radiates freely, without any protective screen (figure 2). To ensure the protection of people, these units must therefore be used with a timer or motion sensor (unit is switched off if motion is detected in the room). DB series: Complementing the D series, the DB variant of the sterilair ceiling emitter features a special additional reflector and a protective screen. This unit avoids direct vertical emission and maximises lateral emission (figure 3). Thanks to the protective screen people can stay and move freely in the room. The DB series is particularly used for the disinfection of room air and for mould control in the condensation area of the ceiling. 30 29 Surfaces Surfaces An adequate microbiological condition of packaging materials, conveyor belts and storage containers is one the most important prerequisites for the durability and hygiene of foodstuffs, beverages and pharmaceutical products. The use of chemical disinfectants is generally forbidden in these applications. UVC radiation provides safe and reliable disinfection during production: without the application of heat, undesirable additives or residues and within a very short time. Contact and smear infections of meat and fresh products can effectively be prevented. Belts, packaging, films and boxes remain microbiologically safe during production, even in multishift operation.

31 30 T2000 Surface emitter system The sterilair T2000 surface disinfection modules have been designed for the disinfection of packaging materials and surfaces. The UVC radiation is concentrated with the aid of special reflectors and focused onto the relevant surface. The elaborate reflector construction increases the radiation intensity at the focal point to 250 percent, leading to a substantially improved disinfection power. The T2000 series is available in different sizes. In the case of the standard unit with a total length of 911 mm, the resulting corridor with reflection-amplified radiation intensity measures approximately 765 x 75 mm. The integrated high frequency electronic ballast guarantees reliable tube ignitions down -20 C and is characterised by particularly high energy efficiency. The maximum heat emission of the UVC tubes is 41 C. Safe disinfection of heatsensitive surfaces such as films, for example, is therefore also possible without any problem. For compliance to HACCP demands the system can optionally be equipped with tubes coated with a special foil for shatter protection. 33 32 T2002-IP Conveyor belt disinfection unit The sterilair T2002-IP surface disinfection system is a sophisticated unit for mounting to the underside of conveyor belts. This positioning means that work processes do not have to be interrupted, enabling permanent disinfection. The flexible arrangement allows adaptation to the respective tasks. The unit can thus be removed quickly and easily for cleaning, maintenance or in order to protect it from potential damage, e.g. from high pressure cleaners. The watertight full enclosure (IP 65) of this system is made of stainless steel, and is ideally suited for particularly adverse operating conditions as high dust levels, dripping water, etc. The housing opening is provided with a window with quartz pane or with a particularly tear-resistant, UV-transmissive special film. Slide-in racks for mounting, electronic control units with limit switches and function monitoring can be supplied if required. 36 35 Water Water Water as a foodstuff is just as much a hygiene focus as technical process water. For example, microorganisms find ideal growth conditions in the washing out of airborne matter in recirculating spray humidifiers and cooling towers. Chemical disinfectants produce a number of undesirable side effects, for instance changes in the surface tension of the medium, general corrosion phenomena, foaming and odour formation. UVC treatment of water does not cause any of these problems. It is a purely physical process that does not generate any undesirable side products or residues. At the same time, the cost efficiency of this disinfection method is impressive. Our scientists have successfully optimised processes that are already standard in drinking water treatment for demanding industrial applications. sterilair immersion emitter systems disinfect humidifiers in painting plants in the aviation industry just as reliably as air conditioning systems in cruise ships, broadcasting studios, airports and office buildings. Moreover, sterilair's special flatbed reactors are even capable of effectively disinfecting brine water, cooling lubricant emulsions and cooling baths in the food industry liquids that have a very low transmittance for UV irradiation.

37 36 AQT Immersion emitter sterilair immersion emitters enable simple and very effective disinfection of UV transparent, aqueous media. Their widest use is for disinfecting water tanks, recirculating spray humidifiers (air washers) and cooling towers. In addition to reliable water disinfection, the principle of the immersion emitter ensures clean surfaces without biofilms. Thanks to its versatile design and principle of application it can easily be retrofitted into already existing systems. The particularly high grade stainless steel construction of the AQT series, optimised over many years, is guaranteed to be watertight (IP 68) even in surface-distentioned mediums. A high level of safety is also ensured by several sealing rings in the sturdy screw fitting, which provides a detachable connection between the sealed electronic ballast and the high performance UVC source. When the default 12,000 operating hours have expired, only UV tubes and sealing rings need to be replaced. The running costs are thus reduced to a minimum. With a power consumption of just 36 watts at 170 ma (standard design) and an outstandingly high UV output of 15 watts, there isn't a more cost effective disinfection solution. 39 38 TGL Suspension system for large volumes The sterilair TGL immersion unit has been designed for water disinfection in cisterns, large volume water tanks and ice water containers. This unit gently eliminates all microorganisms found in water without corrosion, odour, clouding or foaming. The formation of biofilms on surfaces as well as infestation by particularly resistant organisms such as algae, for example, can effectively be controlled with this technology. The high quality supply ballast is sealed in a brushed stainless steel square tube so that it is watertight (IP 68). Installation consists simply of fitting an anchorage point, from which the unit is suspended using a chain. The sterilair TGL suspension system provides highly effective disinfection and is extremely maintenance friendly. Moreover, it is characterised by much more cost effective operation than continuous flow systems disinfecting in bypass mode. 41 40 AQD Continuous flow reactor range The range of sterilair photoreactors is very versatile: it comprises various designs and reactor sizes with disinfection capacities of ,000 l / hr. (default dosage 400 J / m 2 ). The unit is connected to the existing pipe system via the externally threaded nozzles, fitted on the sides at different heights. This series of high quality stainless steel photoreactors is pickled and double passivated in a complex manufacturing process, which further increases its corrosion resistance. The outside surface is glass-bead blasted to provide an attractive appearance. The series can be equipped with performance monitoring (UVC sensor) and operating time recording if required. 43 42 FBR Flatbed reactor The FBR 2006 is a flatbed reactor for process waters with low UVC transmission. By means of a special flatbed substructure, the fluids to be disinfected are conveyed in a thin fluidised film of 2 to 3 mm at a short distance from the UV source, over a length of approximately 800 mm. The high performance surface emitter (type T 2006) disinfects contactless and is protected from soiling. This enables effective disinfection of hot water and cooling baths, as well as cooling lubricant solutions and emulsions. The high quality V4A stainless steel design is also suitable for particularly aggressive media, such as brine water for example. The emitter unit comprises six UVC tubes, electronic ballast and a control module with visualisation of the operating states (ZM 2). The system features active air cooling, so that fluids with higher temperatures can also effectively be disinfected. Volume, temperature and transmission of the medium must be taken into account to ensure optimal working conditions. The emitter unit of type T 2006 can also be used without the flatbed, as a surface disinfection unit with extremely high UVC output.
