3 Makatec GmbH + Makatec Apparate GmbH are two companies with their registered office in Bondorf. Bondorf is a village in Baden-Württemberg, about 45 kilometres south-west of Stuttgart Makatec GmbH was founded in the year 2005 in the year 2008 Makatec Apparate GmbH was founded as subsidiary for the commercialisation of the Makatec HEX technology Makatec Apparate GmbH received exclusive licenses for the production of the protected Makatec HEX foreign distributors for Italy, Spain, Ireland are working with Makatec Apparate GmbH, negotiations with further partners in Turkey and France will be finished soon 3

4 Makatec Technologies Makatec develops new technologies and produces apparatus to improve heat and mass transfer: Heat exchanger based on polymer material (HEX) no corrosion Membrane contactor with integrated heat exchanger (MECO) " improved heat and mass transfer Absorption technology for heating and cooling compact design using Makatec HEX and MECO especially for small units below 10 kw heat input International patents have been granted for these technologies. 4

10 WP 3 - Heat Exchangers made of Plastic Material Proposing new materials of improved economic and environmental performance as heat transfer media to analyse configurations for plastic heat exchanger units to develop and validate accurate CFD models for the detailed description of the flow field and heat transfer in complex-geometry heat exchangers to improve the heat exchanger performance by adjusting both operating conditions and equipment geometry 10

11 WP 3 - Heat Exchangers made of Plastic Material 3.1 Basic design parameters for a spiral wound plastic heat exchanger basic data are prepared by Makatec and delivered to the UPB 3.2 Modelling of complex flows within a spiral wound heat exchanger Makatec will provide experimental data from the plastic heat exchanger units for validation against the advanced 3D CFD models developed by UPB 11

12 WP 3 - Heat Exchangers made of Plastic Material 3.3 Optimisation of the heat exchanger geometry and operating conditions improvement of the heat exchanger performance by adjusting both equipment geometry and operating conditions examination of the effect of the apparatus geometry on the pressure drop and heat recovery. Improvements will be suggested optimal operating conditions in terms of higher flow throughput, lower need on cooling/heating medium and higher heat transfer rates will be investigated by UPB and Makatec 3.4 Experimental validation of the improved geometry based on the theoretical results of UPB, Makatec will develop a optimised prototyp and compare it experimentally with today s Makatec standard type 12

13 WP 5 - Putting into Practice Demonstration of applicability and economic-environmental benefit of novel heat-transfer enhancement techniques and the new design methods proposed implementation of the technologies and design tools developed in the WPs 1-4 at industrial-scale production site in the process industries enabling the real-life validation and demonstration of the findings, know-how and inventions realistic quantification of techno-enviro-economic benefits, compared to conventional heat exchangers gaining valuable feedback for enhancing practicality of technologies developed from the projects 13

14 WP 5 - Putting into Practice 5.1 Demonstration and application of spiral plastic heat exchanger polymer materials have to be identified for an application of the new heat exchanger design for cooling of strong acids like sulphuric or hydrochloric acid if possible, a demonstration in the temperatur range above 100 C will be erected, leading to the requirement of advanced polymer materials with higher temperature resistance compared to Polyolefins 14
