3 General The equipment, the accessories and the preparations are to be used in accordance with the operating instructions and/or the product information. The instructions are part of the scope of delivery and are to be stored in the vicinity of the device for later reference. This also applies if possession of the device is transferred elsewhere. Before the device is put into operation, these Instructions for Use are to be read carefully and completely in order for the user to become familiarised with all functions. The warnings and safety precautions (section 1.5) are always to be followed during use. The manufacturer will not assume any responsibility for the device's safety or functional ability in the event of improper handling or usage contrary to the intended purpose. In the event of unauthorised alterations/modifi cations, both the warranty claim and the CE conformity will expire. 6 1 Product description Ultrasonic bath with cooling of SONOCOOL type. The exact type specifi cation and serial number are found on the type plate. 8 1.1 Mode of operation Ultrasonic baths use the effect of cavitation. Under their oscillating tank bottoms they contain piezoelectric transducers, the energy of which is transferred to the bath liquid with ultrasound frequency as mechanical oscillations. As a result, microscopically small bubbles are continuously formed in the bath liquid, which release energy upon imploding and generate local microcurrents. This process is called cavitation. 1.2 Purpose General use The SONOCOOL ultrasonic bath is intended for use in analytical labs as well as for industrial and scientifi c research and also in pathologies. With the bath it is possible to use the catalytic effect of ultrasound for processes during which simultaneous cooling is required. Heat-sensitive samples are protected by the cooling function and process sequences can be designed to be faster and more effective than customary procedures. Cooling is conducted automatically, the ultrasound can be separately switched on. In addition to the temperature, the runtime can be set for up to 99:59:59 hours. In addition, four different levels of ultrasonic power can be selected. The ultrasonic bath is table-top operated using the keys on the front of the device, and is designed for unmonitored continuous operation. Caution! The sonication takes place indirectly in inset beakers. Ultrasound cleaning directly in the contact liquid is not allowed with the SONOCOOL. In-vitro diagnostic use of the bath The SONOCOOL can be used for in vitro diagnostic treatment or laboratory procedures (e.g. bone decalcifi cation) in which medical information is gathered from the treatment of organic or inorganic material. In this case, it is classifi ed and treated in accordance with Directive 98/79/EC on in vitro diagnostic medical devices (IVD). 1.3 CE conformity The SONOCOOL is declared to be an IVD device and complies with the CE marking criteria of the European Directives: - "IVD" directive - "Low-voltage directive" - "Electromagnetic compatibility" directive in their currently valid versions. 11 1.4.2 Interfaces The SONOCOOL ultrasonic bath features two interfaces on its rear side which may be optionally used by the operator. Note: Implementation of the technical programs required for communication is the responsibility of the operator and is not supported by the manufacturer. The manufacturer only guarantees the proper functioning of the interfaces. Commercially-available cables may be used for the communication. The protocol and set of instructions (user information) can be made available by the manufacturer upon request. 1.5 Warning and safety instructions General Keep the ultrasonic bath out of the reach of children and of persons who have not been instructed in its operation by reference to these instructions. We will not offer any guarantee for damages to the ultrasonic bath or oscillating tank, or to the objects to be treated, as a result of use of inadequate disinfection agents or detergents. Do not expose the ultrasonic bath directly to sunlight and do not position it in the vicinity of heat sources. Keep the surface of the ultrasonic bath and operating elements clean and dry. Do not expose the ultrasonic bath to corroding infl uences. Only move the ultrasonic bath when it is empty. During transportation, the rubber stoppers are to be plugged into the tank's inlet and outlet. Empty the ultrasonic bath only while turned off. Ultrasonic baths adhere to prescribed EMC limit values, such that it can be assumed that the electromagnetic radiation emanating from the units is harmless to humans. A binding statement for wearers of implants can only be made at the place of work and together with the implant manufacturer. In case of doubt, information regarding the allowable electromagnetic exposure level is to be obtained from the implant manufacturer. Operation Observe ambient and set-up conditions, see chapter 1.4. Only plug in the ultrasonic bath to an outlet with a grounded socket. Do not operate the ultrasonic bath without fl uids. Do not fi ll the oscillating tank with hot water (> 30 C). The fi lling temperature should be between 15 and 25 C. 12 / e GB/

13 Do not stand or lay any objects directly on the tank bottom. Use accessories, see chapter 7. Do not immerse any parts of the body (e.g. hands, feet) or living beings (animals or plants) into the tank; in particular, do not touch the bath liquid during ultrasound operation. Danger: Ultrasound has a cell-destroying effect. In the event of continuous activity within a 2 m radius, adequate hearing protection must be used. Danger: Hearing disturbances during operation are possible if not wearing hearing protection the typical ultrasound cavitation noise can be very uncomfortable. Fully replace used fl uids, do not refresh them by adding more fl uids. Follow the manufacturer's dosage instructions. Cooling About the cooling unit in the ultrasonic bath SONOCOOL according to regulation (EU) No 517/2014..: - Refrigerant: 134a; Quantity: 100 g - GWP: max. 1,430 (limit according to EU VO = 2,500) - CO2 Äquvalent: t (limit according to EU VO = 5 t) The cooling unit is considered to be a hermetically sealed device. There is no check for leakage and no service documentation required in a test book. The cooling circuit may not be damaged! If the cooling circuit is damaged, immediately disconnect the power plug and ventilate the installation room well. Send the ultrasonic bath for repair to the manufacturer. Never cover or close the incoming or outgoing air openings on the ultrasonic bath. Damage If damage to the ultrasonic bath is detected, do not connect the ultrasonic bath to the mains. In the event of defects, disconnect the power plug immediately. Repairs are only to be conducted by authorised skilled personnel or by the manufacturer. Defective parts may only be replaced with original parts. Advice for the medical and laboratory field The ultrasonic bath is exclusively intended for use by medical skilled personnel. It may generate radio interferences or disrupt the operation of devices nearby. It may be necessary to take remedial measures such as realigning the device or reconfi guring the ultrasonic bath or the shield. During operation, portable or mobile HF communication systems in the vicinity of the ultrasonic bath should be turned off - their operation may be disrupted. 14 2 Preparation Carefully unpack the ultrasonic bath and accessories and inspect them for completeness or possible transportation damages. If any damages or defects are found, these are to be immediately notifi ed in writing to the transportation company and to the supplier. Before startup, the ultrasonic bath is to be left to stand at its operating location for 2 hours so that it may adapt to the ambient conditions. 2.1 Scope of delivery 1 ultrasonic bath with integrated cooling unit (order No.: 3500) including: 1 beaker holder PH lid D 255 G 20 inset beakers SD drain hose ¼" 1 mains cable 2 rubber stoppers (as transport safety devices) 1 TICKOPUR TR ml 1 Instruction manual Additional accessories according to order see delivery note 2.2 Set-up / assembly Place the ultrasonic bath on a fi rm, level, dry surface, on a location away from direct sunlight if possible. In the process - Observe the maximum weight of the ultrasonic bath, including fl uid. For net weight, see technical data chapter Observe the minimum distances for the incoming and outgoing air. 15 2.3 Start-up Important! During delivery, rubber stoppers are plugged into the tank's inlet and outlet so that any residual water from the manufacturer's fi nal inspection does not leak into the internal fl uids circuit during transportation. Leave these stoppers in place for the time being! Thoroughly wipe clean the ultrasonic bath's oscillating tank before its fi rst use. Connect the ultrasonic bath up to the power supply (grounded socket). To conduct a function test, fi ll and ventilate the oscillating tank in accordance with chapter 4. Briefl y activate the ultrasound on the switched-on ultrasonic bath. A hissing noise should be heard. Check whether the cooling unit starts: An air current should be detectable on the rear side of the outgoing air opening, the fan motor should be running audibly. It is recommended that a foil test be conducted as part of quality assurance prior to the fi rst use, see chapter 6.1. Next, empty out and switch off the ultrasonic bath in accordance with chapter 4. Hang the beaker holder in the oscillating tank and place the lid on top. Caution! Safely store the rubber stoppers for later emptying or refi lling of the tank, or for safe transportation e GB/ / 48

16 3 Operation 3.1 Operating elements The unit is operated from the front: LCD display 2 Arrow keys [ ],[ ], [ ], [ ] 3 Key [SET] 4 Key [START/STOP] 5 Status LED Turning the ultrasonic bath on/off The ultrasonic bath is turned on or off using the mains switch on the rear side. After turning on, the LCD display must light up. Initialisation occurs automatically. ===================== BANDELIN electronic * S O N O C O O L * ===================== - initialising - Next, the ultrasonic bath will be on stand-by mode and will be ready for operation. The status LED (5) will be lighted, the most recently-set values for runtime, temperature and ultrasonic power will be displayed. (Values during fi rst-time activation: target temperature 17 C, target runtime 00:10:00 hh:mm:ss, target power 100 %). The last-selected parameters ( runtime, target temperature, target power) will be saved and accessed the next time the device is turned on. 16 / e GB/

17 3.1.2 Explanation of the display fields All relevant operating parameters and the status are shown on the LCD display (e.g.: stand-by mode, see also chapter ). If [START/STOP] has not yet been pressed, the time will correspond to the target runtime. Actual temperature Actual temperature in the oscillating tank Power specification Specifi ed value for the ultrasonic power during sonication (in %) Note: As soon as the ultrasonic bath is turned on, the cooling will run automatically according to the set target temperature. If cooling is not desired, it can be temporarily deactivated by adjusting the target temperature, e.g. by setting the temperature to 30 C. The ultrasound is switched on separately (see chapter 3.4). 3.2 Signals on the ultrasonic bath Meaning of the colours of the status LED LED green yellow Ultrasonic bath is operating faultlessly. Explanation Warning. Ultrasonic bath may still be operated, however. red Error (see error number). The ultrasonic bath or ultrasound cannot be started. Newly-occurring errors are notifi ed with a short audible signal and sometimes with a blinking warning sign e GB/ / 48

18 3.3 Types of operation The operation of the SONOCOOL ultrasonic bath is conducted using four different operating modes. Name and sample display Brief description / display To achieve... The residual runtime ( remaining runtime) is shown in non-inverted format and runs as a second-bysecond countdown. Below it, the actual temperature is displayed. All valid target values are shown on the bottom rows. Interruption of the active mode The remaining runtime is shown in inverted form (dark text on a light background). The process can be continued thereafter. The display is similar to the one for Stand-by mode; however the message "p-a-u-s-e" appears on the next to last row. - Stand-by mode + [START/STOP] key - Editing mode (from Stand-by and Pause) + [START/ STOP] key - Pause mode + [START/STOP] key - Active mode + [START/STOP] key 18 / e GB/

19 3.4 Setting the operating parameters By pressing the [SET] key, the editing mode is activated. Depending on the operating mode used to call up the editing mode, it will be possible to change different operating parameters: Call-up from Editable parameters Stand-by mode Target runtime, target temperature and target power Active mode Target temperature and target power Pause mode Remaining runtime (without changing the target runtime!), target temperature and target power It is possible to switch between the individual parameters by pressing the [ ] key or [ ] key. By pressing the [ ] and [ ] keys, the setting values can be changed. Each of the editable parameter positions is displayed inversely. Changes made become immediately active Temperature setting The temperature can be changed at any time in editing mode. Setting limits: 4-40 C 12:00: C 12:00: C 50% Temperature: 17.2 C 12:00: C 50% Example: taken from stand-by mode Editing mode ( temperature) SET Notes: If the actual temperature exceeds the value of the target temperature by more than C, the ultrasonic bath will shut off the ultrasound for safety reasons (ultrasound energy heats up the liquid). If the limit value is exceeded before the start, it will not be possible to activate the ultrasound. The status LED will blink red. The ultrasonic bath will independently activate the ultrasound if the actual temperature is once again within the stated tolerance range. The set time will only be counted during active ultrasound emission. If the target value for the temperature is higher than the actual temperature, only a warning will be issued and the ultrasound may be started. The status LED will blink yellow. With a target temperature below 15 C, the ultrasound may be occasionally switched off under normal ambient conditions (approx. 20 C). This can be prevented by reducing the ultrasound power setting e GB/ / 48

20 3.4.2 Time setting The target runtime can only be edited from stand-by mode. It cannot be edited while under active operation ( active mode) since the ultrasound continues to be active while in editing mode. From the pause mode, only the remaining runtime can be edited. This setting, however, will not change the runtime specifi cation (saved value in stand-by mode). 21 3.5 Activating / deactivating the ultrasound By pressing the "START/STOP" key, the ultrasound is turned on. This will be visually shown on the display through a countdown of the remaining runtime. 12:00: C START STOP 11:59: C 12:00: C 50% 12:00: C 50% Example: stand-by mode Active mode Pressing the [START/STOP] key once again interrupts the ultrasound emission ( pause mode). 09:15: C 12:00: C 50% START STOP 09:15: C ===== p-a-u-s-e ===== 12:00: C 50% Active mode Pause mode The ultrasound emission can be resumed ( remaining runtime) by pressing the [START/STOP] key once again in pause mode. By pressing the [SET] key for 2 sec, the procedure can be interrupted from pause mode and the display values can be reset (return to stand-by mode). When the set time has elapsed, the ultrasonic bath will stop. The time display will show "00:00:00" and a short audible signal will be emitted. The ultrasonic bath will be in stand-by mode once again e GB/ / 48

22 4 Use Depending on the application, the samples are sonicated indirectly in laboratory fl asks or other sample vessels, which are placed on special holders and inserted into the contact fl uid in the oscillating tank. Direct sonication of objects in the bath fl uid is not permitted with the SONOCOOL. Inset beakers in the beaker holder The intended process sequence is described step by step in the following chapters. Contact liquid Sonication fl uid 4.1 Fill the oscillating tank and de-air it In order to transmit the ultrasound between the oscillating tank and the laboratory fl asks, the tank must be fi lled with a contact liquid composed of normal municipal or deionised water together with a surfactant, e.g. TICKOPUR TR 3. For additional information, see chapter The ultrasonic bath is turned off for filling. CAUTION! In order to achieve full de-airing and thus proper liquid circulation, the following steps must absolutely be adhered to in the given sequence. Rubber stoppers in the inlet Checking that the emptying shut-off valve is closed. For initial fi lling, remove the rubber stoppers from the tank's outlet (bottom). Leave the upper stoppers (in the inlet) in place without fail. First fi ll the oscillating tank approx. 1/3 full with water, then add 50 ml TICKOPUR TR 3. Next, Rubber stoppers in the outlet add water up to 2 cm above the fi lling level mark. Power on the ultrasonic bath using the mains switch on the rear side. After it is turned on, the LCD display must light up. The internal pump starts operating. Remove the rubber stoppers from the inlet. The contact liquid must be visibly and palpably fl owing into the tank through the inlet. The temporary appearance of air bubbles after the liquid has been fi lled is normal. Note: In rare cases in which liquid is not conveyed, it is possible that an air bubble has formed in the system and is preventing the conveyance of liquid through the pump. In such a case, a portion of the liquid must be drained. The ultrasonic bath must be turned on during this process. To do so, remove the protective cap from the drain, attach the hose supplied with delivery, and open the shut-off valve. Here, the water level must still be above the inlet. Circulation gets underway and it is possible to clearly see how the liquid fl ows out at the inlet. Afterwards, fully refi ll the ultrasonic bath (with the liquid collected). 22 / e GB/

23 If the level of the liquid drops signifi cantly below the fi lling level mark, water must be added accordingly - the liquid level may not drop below the inlet. Note: It is possible that liquid will need to be added several times until the internal tubing is fully de-aired. With inset beakers included, the fi ll level must be at or above the fi lling level mark since a low fi ll level may cause damage to the ultrasonic bath. Safely store the rubber stoppers for later emptying or refi lling of the tank, or for safe transportation. Instructions filling Do not fi ll the oscillating tank with hot water (> 30 C). The fi lling temperature should be between 15 and 25 C. At least drinking-quality water must be used to fi ll the oscillating tank. Only use distilled or deionised water without additives in inset beakers or insert tubs. Do not use any combustible fl uids (e.g. benzine, solvents) or chemicals that contain chloride ions or that separate (some disinfectants, household cleaners, and dish detergents) for sonication in the stainless steel tank. When working with aggressive preparations in inset beakers or insert tubs: Prevent the contact fl uid or stainless steel surfaces from being sprayed. If needed, replace the contact fl uid immediately, clean the surfaces and wipe dry. When using preparations, the safety instructions included in the product leafl ets are to be fundamentally adhered to. 4.2 Degassing the fluid Freshly-filled contact liquid or liquid that has remained in the oscillating tank for a long period of time must be degassed prior to use. See also chapter Remove basket and other accessories from the oscillating tank. Turn on the ultrasonic bath. The internal pump starts pumping, the cooling runs automatically according to the set target temperature. Note: If cooling is not desired, it can be temporarily deactivated by adjusting the target temperature, e.g. by setting the value to 30 C. The ultrasound is switched on separately (see chapter 3.4). The contact liquid must visibly and palpably flow into the tank through the (tank) inlet. Set the degassing time (10 min) and activate the ultrasound, see chapter e GB/ / 48

24 4.3 Ultrasound operation For optimal diffusion of the ultrasound and protection of the oscillating tank, nothing should be in contact with the bottom of the bath during sonication. Laboratory fl asks and other sample vessels must be stored in the supplied beaker holder or in a similar accessory. It is possible to treat multiple sample vessels with different fl uids at the same time. When treating small quantities of combustible fl uids in sample vessels, the countryspecifi c guidelines/regulations that are currently in effect are to be observed. The ultrasonic bath is turned off for inserting the beakers. Insert the inset beakers into the beaker holder, making sure that: The inset beakers are immersed a minimum of 2 cm in the contact liquid. Possible air bubbles are completely removed from below the vessels. Inset beakers SD 01.2 made of glass When using sample containers, e.g. sample cassettes for decalcifi cation of bone tissue, make sure of the following: 2cm 2/3 - All samples must be fully covered with fl uid. Contact liquid - If sample cassettes are stacked in the glass, this may signifi cantly impair the distribution of sound. - There may not be any air bubbles in hollow areas (e.g. blind holes). Sample (reagent) After inserting the beakers and beaker holders, the fi ll level of the oscillating tank must always be at or slightly above the fi lling level mark. A fi ll level that is too low will damage the ultrasonic bath. Set the desired sonication time and start the ultrasound, see chapters 3.4 and 3.5. Following sonication, remove the beaker holders with inset beakers from the tank and set down on a level surface. Before the next sonication, verify the service life of the contact fl uid. Heed the specifi cations of the preparation manufacturer. If the fl uid is heavily contaminated, it should be replaced even earlier as it can reduce the effi cacy of the ultrasound. Power off the ultrasonic bath ( mains switch on the rear side). The last-selected parameters ( runtime, target temperature, target power) will be saved and accessed the next time the ultrasonic bath is started. 24 / e GB/

25 4.4 Refresh / replace the contact liquid. The contact liquid in the ultrasonic bath must be regularly replaced. Layers of contamination on the tank bottom reduce the ultrasonic output. The oscillating tank is to be emptied and cleaned after a long period of use or sonication of heavily soiled objects. For additional information, see chapters and 5.1. In order to replace the contact liquid, the ultrasonic bath is emptied out as described below and refilled in accordance with chapter 4.1. After fi lling, it is turned on for approx. 5 minutes (without ultrasound). The integrated pump starts working automatically and thoroughly flushes the ultrasonic bath. Repeat the emptying, fi lling and fl ushing process two or three times. In order to drain the contact liquid, please proceed as follows: Switch off the ultrasonic bath ( mains switch on the rear side). Remove the protective cover from the emptying nozzle and slide the supplied ¼" drain hose onto the emptying nozzle. Place the other end of the drain hose in a suitable recipient or in the sink. closed open Insert the rubber stopper in the inlet Protective cap (see chapter 4.1). Shut-off valve Emptying nozzle To open the shut-off valve, turn it in a clockwise direction to the dead stop. Empty the ultrasonic bath as much as possible. To do so, slightly tip the ultrasonic bath toward the left, along its long side where the emptying nozzle is located. After emptying, close the shut-off valve once again. If necessary, remove the hose and cover the emptying nozzle with the cap. In order to keep the ultrasonic bath in hygienic condition, it is recommended that the oscillating tank be thoroughly rinsed after emptying. Notes: For transportation purposes, the ultrasonic bath must be emptied to the extent possible. Next, seal both of the tank's openings for the inflow and outflow (see chapter 4.1) with the rubber stoppers supplied. A complete emptying of the ultrasonic bath is not possible. A small amount of contact liquid always remains in the ultrasonic bath. Caution! Pressurised air may NOT be blown through the hose conduits e GB/ / 48

26 4.5 Further information Contact fluid Since inset beakers must be used in the ultrasonic bath in principle, the bath must be fi lled with contact liquid. This contact fl uid must be able to transfer the ultrasound to the liquid found in the inset beakers without loss, if possible. The surface tension is very high in municipal and deionised water. Due to this high surface tension, the cavitation does not form in the entire solution, but rather only on the oscillating tank bottom or in water inhomogeneities, in general. To reduce the surface tension, add a surfactant preparation that is biodegradable, easily disposable, gentle to the material and long-lasting. We recommend TICKOPUR TR 3, which is easily available from specialist laboratory supply dealers. Even when used for a long period of time, this preparation does not leave behind any dirty rims or incrustations, does not turn cloudy, and has an average service life of 5-7 days before having to be replaced. Note: In order to prevent clouding or precipitation of the contact liquid when using very hard water, the contact liquid can be mixed with deionised water Effect of the rubber stoppers on the oscillating tank's inlet and outlet Basically, only the rubber stoppers on the tank's inlet are required for filling and emptying purposes. However, both rubber stoppers must be plugged in when transporting the ultrasonic bath in order to prevent residual water from leaking out (residual water after emptying the circular fl ow cannot be fully avoided). Stopper effect when filling: Due to the stopper, slight counterpressure in the ultrasonic bath's liquid circuit is created during the fi lling process. When enough liquid is present in the tank, the stopper is removed. A pressure balance is created and the liquid fl ows jerkily up to the pump, which can now start conveying. In this manner, air bubbles that could impair the system's pumping effect are avoided. Stopper effect when emptying: Use of the stopper during emptying prevents air from being pulled into the liquid circuit through the tank's inlet, which could signifi cantly restrict the system's suction effect and interfere with the emptying of aggregate and pump. 26 / e GB/

27 4.5.3 Degassing Degassing the bath fl uid increases the ultrasound effect. Freshly-filled contact liquid or liquid that has remained in the oscillating tank for a long period of time must be degassed prior to use. Gases released in the liquid (e.g. oxygen) are reduced through degassing, thus significantly improving the ultrasound effect. The cavitation noise changes during degassing, loud degassing noises disappear at the end of the degassing process, the ultrasonic bath appears to work more quietly. A lower noise level, however, does not mean a reduction in ultrasonic power. It rather means the end of the degassing process and an improvement in the ultrasound effect Disposal of sonication fluids The working solution is disposed of pursuant to the specifi cations of the product leafl et, the safety data sheet, and the manufacturer label for the preparations employed. The aqueous preparations of DR H. STAMM GmbH are prepared pursuant to the provisions of the Washing and Cleansing Agents Act, are biodegradable and may be added to sewerage as working solutions. Strongly acidic and strongly alkaline fl uids are to be previously neutralised pursuant to technical data sheet specifi cations. The manufacturer specifications for the corresponding preparations are to be observed. If the working solution contains substances that are dangerous to water, e.g. oils, heavy metal compounds, etc. after use, it must be treated once the limit values are exceeded (removal of contaminants) or disposed of as hazardous waste. In every case, the statutory provisions and regulations of municipal wastewater plants are to be adhered to. Information is provided by municipal wastewater plants as well as by environmental agencies e GB/ / 48

28 5 Cleaning and maintenance of the ultrasonic bath To achieve an optimum lifespan for the ultrasonic bath, cleaning and maintenance are to be conducted regularly. Following are instructions for manual cleaning and care. CAUTION! Disconnect the ultrasonic bath from the mains before cleaning / maintenance. Do not rinse or immerse the ultrasonic bath in water and do not expose it to splash water. A guarantee will not apply to damages caused by the use of unsuitable disinfection agents or detergents. 5.1 Cleaning and care Liquid circuit The contact liquid circuit runs, during operation, from the tank's outlet through the pump to the cooling unit, and from there back to the tank. For reasons of hygiene, this circuit must be regularly fl ushed. Fill the oscillating tank with liquid, see chapter 4.1. Turn on the ultrasonic bath. The internal pump starts working automatically and thoroughly fl ushes the ultrasonic bath. Allow the pump to run for at least 5 minutes (without ultrasound). Turn off and empty out the ultrasonic bath, see chapter 4.4. Repeat the described rinsing process two to three times. After the last emptying, wipe dry the oscillating tank using a soft cloth. Oscillating tank The oscillating tank of an ultrasonic bath is a wear part. It is continuously exposed to cavitation during ultrasound operation. Dirt particles remaining in the tank abrade and damage the tank surface due to the movement of the fl uid, therefore Thoroughly and frequently rinse the oscillating tank with water and rub dry using a soft and lint-free cloth. If needed, conduct the rinsing process in accordance with chapter Regularly remove residue from the edges of the oscillating tank using a commercial stainless steel cleaning product without any abrasive additives. Do not use steel wool, scrapers or graters for cleaning / maintenance. Rust particles from the water pipe system can penetrate the passive protective layer of the stainless steel, thereby "activating" the stainless steel, which will cause it to rust. The extraneous rust produces localised corrosion of the stainless steel. For this reason, remove rust stains immediately using a soft cloth and a commercial stainless steel cleaning product without abrasive additives. 28 / e GB/

29 Housing Do not use any abrasive cleaners, only commercial care products without abrasive additives. The housing is to be wiped off only from the outside with a moist cloth; afterwards, allow to dry alone or wipe dry. 5.2 Disinfection If disinfection of the ultrasonic bath is not performed correctly or regularly, there is a risk of microorganisms colonising the device and causing microbiological contamination, particularly on the rim of the bath and around the outflow, which can result in a cross infection. Consequently, the baths and surfaces of the device must be disinfected and cleaned regularly. The disinfection should be performed regularly by the operator in accordance with the hygiene plan and using a VAH-certifi ed 1 or other effective surface disinfectant. 5.3 Warehousing / storing During long periods of non-use, the ultrasonic bath is to be stored in a cool, dry location. During storage and transportation, make sure that frost does not form due to the residual fl uid left in the ultrasonic bath! 30 6 Maintenance and repair 6.1 Maintenance To achieve a consistent sonication quality, the ultrasonic bath is to be inspected at regular intervals. Check the LCD display Switch on the ultrasonic bath - the display must light up. Cleaning the cooling system (once per year) The integrated cooling unit and the pump must be rinsed at regular intervals to prevent deposits caused by the circulating contact fl uid and thus to ensure reliable operation. Checking the flow: The fl ow rate must be approx. 3.5 l/min. Connect the hose to the emptying nozzle. Please also refer to Chapter 4.4. Place an empty bucket underneath and provide a bucket fi lled with contact fl uid for replenishment. Note: During the check, ensure that the pump is running at all times. The tray s fi ll level must be above the intake and fi ll level sensor. It must be constantly replenished. Switch on the ultrasonic bath. Open the shut-off valve for 1 minute. Permanently replenish the liquid to ensure that the fi ll level sensor is constantly immersed in it. Close the shut-off valve. 3.5 litres of liquid should be in the bucket after 1 minute. If the bucket is fi lled with approx. 3.5 litres, rinsing is not necessary. If the fl ow rate is clearly below << 3 l/min this, rinsing must be carried out. Please refer to the following section. Performing the rinsing process: For rinsing, we advise using: TICKOPUR TR 13 (at a dose of 5%) Drain the contact liquid. Please also refer to Chapter 4.4. Prepare the rinsing liquid: Fill a bucket with 4.75 litres of lukewarm water and 250 ml of TICKOPUR TR 13. Close the shut-off valve and carefully add the prepared rinsing liquid. The oscillating tray can be fi lled beyond the fi ll level mark. If there is any contact fl uid remaining, the rinsing liquid may not fully fi t in the tray. Set the bath temperature to 40 C and leave the ultrasonic bath to run for at least 1 hour (the liquid should heat up). Drain the rinsing liquid. Close the shut-off valve and fi ll with clear water. Start up for 5 minutes (with and 30 / e GB/

31 without cooling). Drain the rinsing liquid. Please also refer to Chapter 4.4. Does the ultrasonic bath need to be prepared for its next use? Then fi ll it with contact fl uid as appropriate. We advise rinsing again if impurities from the hose system are present during the rinsing process. If the fl ow rate is still below 3 l/min after several rinse cycles, the ultrasonic bath must be sent in for maintenance ahead of schedule. Testing the ultrasound The function can be tested using a standard wattmeter. It is to be inserted between the ultrasonic bath's mains plug and the power outlet. Fill the oscillating tank with fl uid, see chapter 4.1. Turn on the ultrasonic bath. Briefl y turn off the cooling - to do so, raise the target temperature on the control panel until the actual temperature is exceeded by more than one degree. Switch on the ultrasound on. Compare the value displayed on the wattmeter with the corresponding value in the technical data (chapter 1.4) (tolerances ± 20 %). Switch off the ultrasound once again. Turn on the cooling. To do so, lower the target temperature to more than one degree below the actual temperature. Switch off the ultrasonic bath Testing the cooling The function can be tested using a standard wattmeter, whereby the absorbed power when the cooling is turned on is approx. 100 to 200 W above the power when it is turned off. Fill the oscillating tank with fl uid, see chapter 4.1. Turn on the ultrasonic bath. Leave the ultrasound switched off. Briefl y turn off the cooling - to do so, raise the target temperature on the control panel until the actual temperature is exceeded by more than one degree. Check the value displayed on the wattmeter and note it down if necessary. Turn on the cooling again. To do so, reduce the target temperature to more than one degree below the actual temperature. Check the value displayed on the wattmeter and calculate the difference in power from the previously-read value. Additional information for a functioning cooling unit: - An air current is detectable on the rear side of the outgoing air opening. - The fan motor can be heard relatively well. 32 Checking the ultrasound effect For testing purposes, it is recommended that a foil test be conducted (twice a year). To conducted the test, commercially-available aluminium foil, scissors, a waterproof pencil, and a beaker holder together with inset beakers are required. Next, a comparison is made with previously-generated foils. IMPORTANT The foil test must be conducted in inset beakers since aluminium foil remains may clog the cooling circuit. Therefore, it also important to ensure during the test that no aluminium foil ends up in the oscillating tank. Foil test A foil test 2 is recommended for testing ultrasonic baths. It is to be conducted upon initial startup, and at regular intervals thereafter (e.g. every 3 months). The frequency of testing is the responsibility of the user. The foil test is a simple procedure to demonstrate the intensity and distribution of cavitation in an ultrasonic bath. To do so, aluminium foil is stretched over a foil test frame. It is perforated or destroyed to a certain degree by cavitation, depending on the duration. For purposes of reproducibility, it is important that the test conditions remain constant: level of liquid in the oscillating tank (2/3) and in the sample vessel temperature of the tank contents degassing time, if applicable (degassing for 10 mins. before the test) foil properties (thickness, surface) foil positioning sonication time concentration and type of ultrasound preparation Foils can be archived in a suitable way (scanning, photos, etc.) This allows the foils to be compared at any time. The perforated areas of all foils should have approx. the same dimensions and distribution the results are never identical. A process validation, e.g. for the treatment of medical products, can only be achieved by conducting regular foil tests. Film: Fluid for the foil test In order to obtain an adequately strong cavitation effect, the surface tension of the water used must also be reduced for the foil test with the help of surfactant preparations(in the ultrasonic bath and in the inset beakers). We recommend the following ultrasound preparations: STAMMOPUR DR 8, STAMMOPUR R, TICKOMED 1, TICKOPUR TR 3, TICKOPUR R 30, TICKOPUR TR 7 If none of these preparations is available, a neutral or mildly alkaline preparation that does not destroy aluminium may be used. The preparation must be approved by the manufacturer for use in ultrasonic baths. 2 Investigations on test procedures for ultrasonic cleaners. IEC/TR ( ) 32 / e GB/

33 Conducting the foil test 1. Fill 2/3 of the oscillating tank with water + 1 % suitable concentrate (99 parts water + 1 part concentrate), see chapter Degas the fl uid 3. Fill the inset beakers with the same fl uid, hang them inside the ultrasonic bath and also degas them for approx. 5 minutes. 4. Switch off the ultrasound. 5. Cut the aluminium foil (household foil with a thickness of 10 μm to 25 μm) into small squares or rectangles, so they fi t in the inset beakers. Next, immerse one piece aluminium foil in each inset beaker. Fill level in the inset beaker Aluminium foil, must be immersed Inset beaker 6. Switch on the ultrasound and irradiate the foil for at least one minute until a visible perforation or holes are produced. With sturdier foils (thicker or coated ones), the irradiation time can last up to 3 minutes. 7. Switch off the ultrasound, remove the foil and allow to dry - note/ jot down the position of the individual foils in the beakers. 8. The foil must be perforated (see picture), otherwise contact the manufacturer. 9. Label the foils accordingly with the position of the inset beaker, duration and date, and then archive. 10. After the test, the inset beakers must be thoroughly rinsed out to remove any detached foil particles. 11. 34 6.2 Maintenance conducted by the manufacturer every 2 years The maintenance is conducted by the manufacturer. It especially includes a recalibration of the power parameters, Exchange of internal components, i.e. hoses (if necessary) and technical safety controls. For information on shipment of the ultrasonic bath, see chapter Malfunction / Fault analysis SONOREX ultrasonic baths are robustly constructed and designed for a high level of reliability. Nevertheless, the possibility of a malfunction due to a defective component can never be fully discounted. The following overview of possible sources of error should serve as an aid for error detection and elimination. 34 / e GB/

35 6.3.1 Fault messages on the display. Critical errors are detected by the ultrasonic bath, signalled by the status LED, and shown on the display with an error number. If the error cannot be rectified, the ultrasonic bath must be sent to Customer Service for inspection. The ultrasonic bath interrupts all activities, the ultrasound can no longer be started. The status LED blinks red. Fill the contact liquid (water + concentrate in prescribed quantities) up to the fi lling level mark and resume function with the [START/STOP] key. An error message appears after the device is switched on. The ultrasonic bath may continue to be used, but only with an ultrasonic power of 100%. Switch the ultrasonic bath off and back on. In such a case, the interior conduit system must be rigorously fl ushed, as follows: Remove the outlet's protective cover and connect the drain hose, included in the scope of supply, to the nozzle. - Place a bucket or similar receptacle below the outlet. - Fill a container with at least 8 litres of clean water for refi lling purposes. Municipal water without additives will suffi cient in this case. The ultrasonic bath must be fi lled. Turn on the ultrasonic bath. The internal pump starts operating. Open the shut-off valve all the way. - Observe the speed of the fl ow-through. Once the impurities have been evacuated, this speed should increase noticeably. In addition, ensure that the oscillating tank is fi lled to above the fi lling level mark. If conducted successfully, this fl ushing procedure is to be conducted at regular intervals. If the desired results are not obtained or if the pump does not run, the ultrasonic bath must be sent in for repair e GB/ / 48

A sample copy can be found in the appendix Replacing fuses The ultrasonic bath is protected by 2 electrical microfuses that will activate in the event of fault or overload. If one or both fuses blow, the ultrasonic bath will stop functioning (the LCD display will remain dark). In general, the ultrasonic bath is defective and must be sent to the manufacturer for repair. The ultrasonic bath does not need to be opened in order to replace the fuses. The fuses (microfuses 5 20 mm, 3.15 A) are housed in a plug-in module in the mains socket, which is located on the rear side of the ultrasonic bath. Caution! The ultrasonic bath may not be opened. Disconnect the ultrasonic bath from the mains before replacing the fuses. 38 / e GB/
