Safety Information This manual contains DANGER, WARNING, CAUTION, NOTICE, and NOTE callouts which must be followed to reduce the possibility of personal injury, damage to the equipment, or improper service. This is the safety alert symbol. It is used to alert you to potential personal injury hazards. Obey all safety messages that follow this symbol to avoid possible injury or death. DANGER DANGER indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. WARNING WARNING indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury. 9 1.1 Operating Safety Safety Information Familiarity and proper training are required for the safe operation of the machine. Machines operated improperly or by untrained personnel can be hazardous. Read the operating instructions contained in this manual and the engine manual, and familiarize yourself with the location and proper use of all controls. Inexperienced operators should receive instruction from someone familiar with the machine before being allowed to operate it Do not allow anyone to operate this equipment without proper training. People operating this equipment must be familiar with the risks and hazards associated with it Do not touch the engine or muffler while the engine is on or immediately after it has been turned off. These areas get hot and may cause burns NEVER operate this machine in applications for which it is not intended ALWAYS wear protective clothing appropriate to the job site when operating the machine ALWAYS remain aware of moving parts and keep hands, feet, and loose clothing away from the moving parts of the machine Always operate the machine with all safety devices and guards in place and in working order. 10 Safety Information 1.2 Operator Safety while using Internal Combustion Engines Internal combustion engines present special hazards during operation and fueling. Read and follow the warning instructions in the engine owner s manual and the safety guidelines below. Failure to follow the warnings and safety standards could result in severe injury or death Do not run the machine indoors or in an enclosed area such as a deep trench unless adequate ventilation, through such items as exhaust fans or hoses, is provided. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide. This is a poison you cannot see or smell. Exposure to carbon monoxide can cause loss of consciousness and CAN KILL YOU IN MINUTES Do not smoke while operating the machine Do not smoke when refueling the engine Do not refuel a hot or running engine Do not refuel the engine near an open flame Do not run the engine near open flames Refill the fuel tank in a well-ventilated area Replace the fuel tank cap after refueling ALWAYS check the fuel lines and the fuel tank for leaks and cracks before starting the engine. 11 1.3 Service Safety Safety Information WARNING A poorly maintained machine can become a safety hazard! In order for the machine to operate safely and properly over a long period of time, periodic maintenance and occasional repairs are necessary Do not attempt to clean or service the machine while it is running. Rotating parts can cause severe injury Do not crank a flooded engine with the spark plug removed on gasoline-powered engines. Fuel trapped in the cylinder will squirt out the spark plug opening Do not test for spark on gasoline-powered engines if the engine is flooded or the smell of gasoline is present. A stray spark could ignite the fumes Do not use gasoline or other types of fuels or flammable solvents to clean parts, especially in enclosed areas. Fumes from fuels and solvents can become explosive Keep the area around the muffler free of debris such as leaves, paper, cartons, etc. A hot muffler could ignite the debris and start a fire Keep the machine clean and labels legible. Replace all missing and hard-to-read labels. Labels provide important operating instructions and warn of dangers and hazards ALWAYS check all external fasteners at regular intervals ALWAYS handle blades carefully. The blades can develop sharp edges which can cause serious cuts ALWAYS turn the engine off before performing maintenance or making repairs. wc_si000232gb.fm 11

No sparks, flames, or burning objects near the machine. Shut off the engine before refueling. D A nameplate listing the model number, item number, revision number, and serial number is attached to each unit. Please record the information found on this plate so it will be available should the nameplate become lost or damaged. When ordering parts or requesting service information, you will always be asked to specify the model number, item number, revision number, and serial number of the unit. 15 2.2 Application Operation This screed is a modern, high production machine intended to provide accurate strike-off of concrete slabs with or without the support of grade stakes or forms. The vibrations produced by the eccentric weight are equally transmitted along the beam length and will provide adequate consolidation of unreinforced slabs up to eight inches in depth. Multiple blade lengths and variable exciter weight positions allow for optimum compaction and production of the slab placement. 2.3 Recommended Fuel The engine requires regular grade unleaded gasoline. Use only fresh, clean gasoline. Gasoline containing water or dirt will damage fuel system. Consult engine owner s manual for complete fuel specifications. 2.4 Before Starting Read and understand safety and operating instructions at beginning of this manual Check: Oil level in engine. Fuel level. Condition of air cleaner. Tightness of external fasteners. Condition of fuel lines Adjust handles for operator s comfort. 16 Operation 2.5 To Start See Graphic: wc_gr Move the choke lever to the closed position (a1). Note: If engine is hot, set choke to open position (a2 ) Turn engine switch to ON Press the priming bulb (b) repeatedly until fuel can be seen in the clear plastic fuel-return tube (c) Pull the starter grip (d). Note: If the oil level in the engine is low, the engine will not start. 17 2.7 Operation Operation See Graphic: wc_gr A typical screeding of concrete using the wet screed proceeds as follows: Wet pads need to be established for wet screed guidance. Place wet pads (a) in strips no less than 0.6m (2.0 ft) wide. Note: Hand tools such as magnesium floats are used in conjunction with a laser receiver, transit level, or grade stakes to establish the proper elevation of the pads The float will be used to strike off or build up the level of the fresh concrete to the desired grade and is usually marked with an X (b) to signal the screed operator that grade has been established. A minimum of two areas should be marked per length of screed blade used to strike the entire pad Place the blade on the pad and strike-off perpendicular to the strip axis (c). The operator now uses the marked pads as elevation guides Concrete can be placed between the strips (d) and use them as wet forms for the rest of the placement. Strike-off at this point will be parallel to the axis of the initial wet pads of concrete (e). Note: Screeding MUST be complete before any excess moisture or bleed water is present on the surface, and before the strips have taken an initial set. wc_tx000781gb.fm 17

19 2.8 Exciter Operation See Graphic: wc_gr The vibration speed is controlled by the throttle lever on the power unit. However, the eccentric weight can be adjusted to increase or decrease the force of vibration. Note: The screed eccentric is preset at the factory to position 4&5. To Adjust: Remove the 4 screws (a) mounting the blade to the power unit Remove the 3 screws mounting the eccentric housing (b) Using a 1/4 Allen wrench, loosen the screw (c) holding the eccentric weights in place Adjust weights to desired setting: 0.95kN being the maximum (d) and 0.50kN being the minimum (e) Reassemble components and tighten all hardware. wc_tx000781gb.fm 19

22 Operation 2.11 Lifting Machine See Graphic: wc_gr The wet screed is designed to be light and compact for transporting around the job site To compact the wet screed, loosen screws (a) and fold down the upper handle. Tighten screws (a) to hold handle position The lifting handle (b) at the base makes carrying the wet screed easier especially if longer blades are attached. wc_tx000781gb.fm 22

24 Maintenance 3. Maintenance 3.1 Periodic Maintenance Schedule The chart below lists basic engine maintenance. Refer to the engine manufacturer s Operation Manual for additional information on engine maintenance. Honda Daily before starting After first 20 hrs. Every 50 hrs. Every 100 hrs. Check fuel level. 25 3.2 Engine Oil Maintenance See Graphic: wc_gr Drain oil while the engine is still warm Turn the engine 90 so the fuel tank is facing downward. Check that the fuel tank cap (a) is tightened Remove the oil fill plug (b) and drain the oil into a container by tipping the engine forward the oil filler neck (c). Note: In the interests of environmental protection, place a plastic sheet and a container under the machine to collect any liquid which drains off. Dispose of this liquid in accordance with environmental protection legislation Fill the engine crankcase with recommended oil up to the level of the plug opening (d). 26 Maintenance 3.3 Air Cleaner See Graphic: wc_gr The engine is equipped with a single element air cleaner. Service air cleaner frequently to prevent carburetor malfunction. NOTICE: NEVER run engine without air cleaner. Severe engine damage will occur. NEVER use gasoline or other types of low flash point solvents for cleaning the air cleaner. A fire or explosion could result. WARNING To service: Press the latch (a) on the top of the air cleaner cover (b), and remove the cover Check the filter (c) to be sure it is in good condition. Replace damaged filters Wash filter element (c) in solution of mild detergent and warm water. Rinse thoroughly in clean water. Allow element to dry thoroughly. Soak element in clean engine oil and squeeze out excess oil Reinstall the filter (c) and air cleaner cover (b). wc_tx000782gb.fm 26

27 3.4 Spark Plug Maintenance See Graphic: wc_gr Clean or replace the spark plug as needed to ensure proper operation. Refer to your engine operator s manual. The muffler becomes very hot during operation and remains hot for a while after stopping the engine. Do not touch the muffler while it is hot. WARNING Note: Refer to section Technical Data for the recommended spark plug type and the electrode gap setting Remove the spark plug and inspect it Replace the spark plug if the insulator is cracked or chipped Clean the spark plug electrodes with a wire brush Set the electrode gap (a) Tighten the spark plug securely. NOTICE: A loose spark plug can become very hot and may cause engine damage. wc_tx000782gb.fm 27

28 Maintenance 3.5 Cleaning the Machine Remove any excess concrete with a high pressure washer. Be sure to remove any concrete buildup on the underside of the blades. Note: When pressure washing the machine, avoid using harsh chemicals and only use moderate water pressure ( psi) Avoid direct pressure to the following components: Engine Hoses Labels CAUTION Do not use a hammer or wire brush to remove concrete from the screed. 3.6 Troubleshooting If engine doesn t start, check that: Engine switch is on Start. Fuel tank has fuel. Choke lever is in correct position. Choke should be closed when starting a cold engine. Spark plug is in good condition. Spark plug cap is tight. 31 4.4 Measurements of Operator Exposure to Vibration Technical Data The operator of this machine should expect to be exposed to vibration when using the machine in performance of its normally intended function. For example, hand/arm vibration at 8000 rpm on SB 14F measures: 6.86 m/s 2 (22.51 ft/s 2 ) These are the representative values of the weighted root mean square (rms) acceleration to which the hands and arms are subjected. These weighted rms values are measured according to ISO The results are compliant to the limit and action vibration values (hand/ arm and whole body) as specified in European directive 2002/44/EC. wc_td000234gb.fm 31
