8 WHAT PIPE IS RIGHT? 8 It can get a bit confusing even for us, and we talk about this all of the time. PEX and PEX-AL-PEX are measured by different standards and so the ID of each (above), even though they are both referred to as 1, are considerably different. Now enters 1 ¼ PEX with an ID of.022 larger than 1 PEX-AL-PEX. All of our PEX is made by WATTS in their KANSAS CITY, USA Facility An O 2 Barrier pipe is only required for Closed or Pressurized systems. Very few boilers are this type. Check with your dealer or manufacturer, but if it has a vent on the top open to the atmosphere, that is a strong indication of an Open system. On the negative side for PEX-AL-PEX all of the fittings are compression style and more expensive than PEX fittings. Also, you should know that PEX-AL-PEX is no longer made in North America and that most of it, like ours, is imported from Asia. The right size and type of pipe for your specific use can only be determined by you, your dealer, boiler manufacturer, and installer. Generally speaking though the longer the run, or the higher BTU requirements you have, the more likely it is that you should consider a larger ID pipe. That said the vast majority or OWB users are fine with 1 PEX. Both are excellent performers with PerformaFlex being the industry standard.
