For restaurants and hotels, this can be the difference between whether customers choose to return or not and that can have a big impact on an operator s bottom line. In all commercial buildings, the provision of water should never require a second thought. Such water systems are often large, complex and demanding so our understanding of what s needed behind the scenes, such as Pressure Reducing Valves (PRV), expansion vessels and Thermal Balancing Valves (TBV), is critical in ensuring the safe, efficient and constant flow of water. First street manchester case study The ongoing redevelopment of the mixed-use complex at First Street, Manchester, required an overhaul of its water supply infrastructure. To help effectively manage water pressure in some of the buildings, Reliance worked with the M&E consultants to install its Pressure Reducing Valves (PRVs). Fitted as a one-piece cartridge, Reliance PRVs enable efficient operation and swift maintenance or replacement with minimal downtime.

The Reliance two-step shower installation is another example of how we re at the forefront of washroom innovation. During the construction phase, concealed showers supplied with a plastic cover over the shower outlet are installed before the walls are plastered to ensure a flush fitting. This is the first fix. The second fix simply involves removing this plastic cover and replacing it with a chrome faceplate during the final fit-out. This unique installation prevents scratching or damage to the faceplates during building work. There are also no lost parts - the faceplates are packed separately and can be retained in stores until they are needed.

7 Education. Our education sector is under great pressure to ensure the constant maintenance and improvement of facilities across all primary, secondary, higher and further education estates. Yet rising demand for school places and limited public funding means resources are more stretched than ever. Specifying products for education buildings places emphasis on the need to only invest in solutions that will perform long-term. Where water management is concerned this translates into ensuring safe use, trouble-free and tamper-proof operation, as well as quick and easy maintenance. The campus accommodates facilities for research innovation, teaching and learning, and engagement. It includes Science Central - a partnership between the University and Newcastle City Council - and the purpose built Newcastle University Business School. The timeflow solutions used across the University campus not only deliver safe water to the staff and students but also save up to 60% of water consumption when compared to conventional taps.

As such, our Heatguard Dual provides the perfect solution for school washroom outlets. Approved to both TMV2 and TMV3 standards, this innovative TMV is tamper-proof and scale resistant with a rapid failsafe, protecting users from the risk of scalds. Reliance double check valves also prevent back flow and cross contamination in water systems where chemicals from science labs or art studios may be disposed of into the water system. Ease of use, durability and the conservation of water and energy are key considerations in education buildings. 9 Health Care - Carehomes. The 2011 census recorded more than 10.5 million people aged 65 and over. By 2050, this age group will make up more than a quarter of the UK population. New research by the University of Liverpool and University College London estimates within just eight years, 2.8m people over 65 will need nursing and social care. The Heatguard Style, for example, is a thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) that is TMV 3 approved but at half the size of standard Tmv s and with a chrome finish, it disguises the critical safety aspects and suits any high spec bathroom. Balhousie Care Homes Scotland case study As a company operating 25 care homes across Scotland, the protection of vulnerable residents is at the core of the Balhousie Care Group. Therefore, to help safeguard residents against the risk of scalds, the Group has installed thermostatic controls in three of its purpose-built care homes.

12 Health Care - Hospital. Our population is growing and we re living longer, placing unprecedented strain on healthcare resources, funding and facilities. Much of the UK s healthcare estate is also getting old, with some hospital buildings pre-dating the creation of the NHS. Without the significant investment needed to modernise quickly and completely, our ageing infrastructure presents many challenges to providing proper patient care now and in the future. One such issue is the need to reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections and incidents, currently estimated to cost the NHS in excess of 1billion a year. We believe that a safely and effectively managed water system is one of a hospital s most critical tools. If the component parts of a water system, from valves to taps and showers, have been thoughtfully designed to suit the complexities and maintenance demands of the hospital environment, they will be effective in minimising a patient s risk of infection from Legionella and Pseudomonas. They will also provide protection for children, elderly, infirm or vulnerable people against scalding or burns. These specific needs led Reliance to create its most innovative range of healthcare solutions from specialist Anti-Legionella Valves to our Caremix Prime taps specially designed and Pvd coated to prevent bacteria breeding. Alder Hey Children s Health Park Liverpool case study As a world leader in the medical treatment and care of children, stringent safety, hygiene and infection control standards are critical at the new Alder Hey Children s Health Park. As such, Reliance manufactured a bespoke shower solution in modular form using the 200 Series Caremix Shower Panel with a custom ceiling trim to suit these fundamental needs as well as the hospital s comfortable, home-from-home design.

13 SPOTLIGHT Over many years we ve developed a deep understanding of how water is used in hospitals. As such, Reliance introduced a specialist Anti-Legionella Valve which can be installed on expansion vessels on the smaller water heaters often used around hospital buildings. This reduces the stagnation of water in the system and protects against the risk of Legionella. We also recommend incorporating our specialist Harron Valve to keep a system balanced and outlets at a safe outlet pressure, ensuring L8 compliance with deadlegs kept to a minimum. In addition, Reliance provides the toughest TMV technology to guard against scalding and contamination risks and our Heatguard TMV3-8 is D08 compliant and TMV3 approved. The Caremix S3, T3 and H3 taps are D08 and HTM04-01 compliant and WRAS and TMV3 approved. The product design ensures no water contact with EPDM O rings and the special PVD coating is scratch-resistant for longer operational life. We lead the industry with innovative products for washroom applications. Our Caremix Universal Thermostatic Cartridge is one such example. Where most suppliers insist on different cartridges for different systems and products, our design fits all outlet types. So, no matter which taps, showers or panels you choose, you only need a single cartridge. This is a cartridge which not only reduces your inventory and the associated cost of restocking it also prevents damage to your washroom products due to the wrong cartridge being fitted. 15 Residential The construction of new homes hasn t been keeping pace with demand, and the Government estimates that between 225,000 and 275,000 new homes are now needed every year for the foreseeable future. With space at a premium in the UK, building high-rise and multi-occupancy developments are a favourable solution and popular trend as we try to solve the housing crisis. However, while we need to create homes as quickly as possible, it s critical that they are built to last. Quality, affordability, energy efficiency and sustainability are therefore key factors in the planning, design, build, performance and maintenance of all new homes. We apply these same considerations to our products, designing innovative controls that will safely, efficiently and effectively manage the fundamental household resources of water and heat. For example, we understand the complexities of water systems in tall multi-occupancy buildings and manage them efficiently with robust Pressure Reducing Valves (PRV). Our Tenant Valve is bornefrom the need to save space, maintenance time and reduce the risk of leaks, and so provides multiple valves in one multi-purpose unit for simplicity and ease. Likewise, the Reliance Rapid Heat Interface Unit (hiu) supports the adoption of a community heat network, a greener heat source for new build developments. The General BriSTol case study The Reliance range of Radiance Thermal Interface Units has been installed throughout the phased redevelopment of the Grade II listed buildings that, since 1858, housed Bristol General Hospital. When complete The General will be home to a collection of 205 one to four bedroom, new and converted, luxury apartments and houses.

16 SPOTLIGHT The complexity of water systems in tall buildings is dramatically increased due to height and scale, so too is the need for our large Pressure Reducing Valves. These corrosion resistant bronze valves can be installed in any orientation to reduce pressure at the point where the riser enters the floor to high-rise apartments. Our unique Tenant Valve Plus design then further reduces pressure, delivering water safely into individual dwellings. The Tenant Valve Plus combines a number of functions in one compact self-contained unit to control and monitor water supply to multi-unit sites, such as flats or offices. It incorporates a ball type isolating valve, also approved as a stop valve, pressure reducing valve, double check valve, dual reading pressure gauge/test point and a connection point for optional addition of a Class A water meter. Alternatively, an adaptor is available from RWC to fit a Class D water meter. All components are accessible from one side of the valve, which is supplied with a moulded insulating cover.
