3 Dairy Farm Hygiene Programme Evans Livestock Protection
4 Evans Vanodine International Dairy Farm Hygiene Programme An effective hygiene programme is essential in the modern dairy farm to enable quality milk to be produced. Milk must meet the highest standards of quality and hygiene to produce profits. Reduction in the quality and quantity of milk produced is caused by MASTITIS. Mastitis is an inflammation of the udder caused by infection with bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streotococcus agalactiae, Streotococcus uberis and Escherichia coli. The infection leads to increased numbers of somatic cells and bacterial cells in milk. The bacteria can be transmitted from cow to cow during milking and from the environment to the cow during housing. In order to prevent the transmission of these bacteria attention must be paid to the teats, the milking machine and the cows environment. Immediately after milking, teats must be dipped or sprayed with a teat dip to kill bacteria on the teat surface. Products must be capable of killing MASTITIS pathogens and maintaining teat skin in good condition. After milking, the milking machine must be cleaned to remove any milk residues which can support the growth of bacteria and lead to contamination of fresh milk at the next milking. Products must be capable of removing fat and protein and should aim to reduce the build up of milkstone. Stage 1 Clean teats and udders. Stage 2 Milk Cows. Stage 3 Dip or spray teats. Stage 4 Circulation cleaning. Stage 5 Bulk tank cleaning. Stage 6 Cleaning and disinfection of housing. Accurate records of cases of mastitis, microbiology to determine the causal agent, good machine maintenance and dry cow therapy have all been demonstrated to reduce the incidence of Mastitis when used with an effective hygiene programme. Evans Vanodine International plc
5 Stage 1 Clean teats and udders 1 Wear clean washable overall and cap. 2 Wash hands or use HANDSAN. 3 Dry wipe teats with individual paper towels. 4 If excessively soiled, wash teats and udders with diluted MASODINE TEAT DIP and dry with individual paper towels. 4 Or, clean and disinfect with PRE-DIP and then dry with individual paper towels. Stage 2 Milk Cows 1 Milk infected cows last if possible. 2 Keep infected milk or milk from antibiotic treated cows separate. 3 Wash hands or use HANDSAN 4 Disinfect clusters using dilute FAM 30 before using on an uninfected cow. 5 Disinfect clusters using dilute FAM 30 or DAIRY HYPOCHLORITE if they fall on the floor during milking. Stage 3 Dip or spray teats 1 Immediately after milking dip or spray each teat of every cow with the selected teat dip/spray (MASODINE/MASOCARE/SAPPHIRE/MASOFILM). 2 Ensure that the entire surface of the teat is covered with the teat dip/spray solution. 3 Keep milking area, walk ways and holding areas free of dung, dirty water etc. 4 Keep cows standing for 10 minutes after milking to allow the teat canal to close. 5 Treat damaged or sore teats with UDDER SALVE or CREAM. Stage 4 Parlour circulation cleaning 1 Pre-rinse the system with clean warm (38-43 C) water, using 8 to 10 litres of water per unit, to remove all traces of milk, run to waste. 2 Wash the outside of the milking equipment with warm water and FAM 30. Check for damaged or worn components and replace as necessary. Soak filters in FILTER CLEANER if necessary. 3 Run hot water (at least 80 C) through the system, using approximately 4 litres per unit, until it discharges hot (at least 50 C). 4 Prepare circulation cleaner solution CRYSTAL/METRON or VANORINSE in hot water (80 C). Draw this solution into the plant allowing it to discharge to waste until the temperature of the discharge is at least 50 C. 5 Allow the solution to circulate for 10 to 15 minutes before discharging to waste. 6 Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove all residues of circulation cleaner. DAIRY HYPOCHLOTIRE may be added to the final rinse. 7 Periodic use of MILKSTONE REMOVER or MULTI ACID will maintain pipes in good condition.
6 Stage 5 Bulk tank sanitising Manual Sanitising 1 Immediately the tank has been emptied rinse with cold water to remove milk residues. 2 Place plug, dip stick etc. in a solution of the selected bulk tank sanitiser CRYSTAL or VANOSAN and manually scrub clean. Rinse with clean cold water and allow to dry. 3 Thoroughly brush all interior surfaces of the tank with the selected bulk tank sanitiser, CRYSTAL or VANOSAN allowing at least 2 minutes contact time. Pay particular attention to the underside of the bridge and tank covers. 4 Allow the solution to collect in the outlet and brush while running to waste. 5 Thoroughly hose down the tank and lids with clean cold water and allow to drain completely. In-Place Sanitising 1 Immediately the tank has been emptied rinse with cold water to remove milk residues. 2 Allow the prepared solution of bulk tank sanitiser CRYSTAL or VANOSAN to circulate for 15 to 20 minutes in the tank. Run to waste. 3 Rinse with clean fresh water and allow to drain thoroughly. Stage 6 Cleaning and sanitising animal housing 1 Keep cubicles and bedding as dry as possible by mucking out and changing bedding regularly. 2 Use FAM 30 diluted to 1:180 to disinfect walkways, milking parlour floors and stalls. Brush and wash out regularly to prevent build up of soil. 3 Use FAM 30 diluted 1:180 to disinfect calving pens after calving, apply manually or with a power washer. 4 Use FAM 30 diluted up to 1:180 in wheel and foot baths. Volumes required for correct dilution of teat dips MASODINE 1:3 Water Total Volume Dilution 5 litres + 15 litres = 20 litres 1:3 MASOCARE 1:4 Water Total Volume Dilution 5 litres + 20 litres = 25 litres 1:4 SAPPHIRE 1:9 Water Total Volume Dilution 2.5 litres litres = 25 litres 1:9
