It depends on a number of factors, such as the outside temperature generated by the weather, the number of people in the room and whether or not the windows are double-glazed Automatic bypass valve As rooms approach the required temperature and devices such as thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) start to close in the heating system, an automatic bypass valve opens at the same time (proportionally) to enable a safe flow of water around the boiler. Analogue Room Thermostat This type of thermostat has a dial measurement system as opposed to the digital display on a digital room thermostat. It reads temperature by measuring the rate a metal coil or a gas-filled diaphragm expands and contracts. Analogue room thermostats are often hard wired into the heating system. In a stored hot water system, the boiler heats hot water and stores it in a hot water cylinder. This hot water is replenished when it is used or cools to below a certain temperature, and is controlled by a cylinder thermostat and a time switch or programmer. Boiler interlock A term used to describe the action that takes place when the boiler is turned on or off. A combination boiler in a combi boiler based system provide domestic hot water on demand by heating the water as and when required.

Combi boiler based system This is an efficient central heating system in which hot water is supplied on demand from a heat source within the boiler. Comfort level This term describes the ideal household temperature to keep you comfortably warm without being too hot or cold.
5 A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z Cylinder tank This copper or stainless steel tank is used to store hot water, can usually be found in an airing cupboard or kitchen and is often insulated to increase heat retention. Also known as a hot water cylinder and hot water tank Cylinder thermostat To avoid scalding, this control is used on vented cylinders to measure the temperature of the hot water that is used for cleaning, showering, bathing and washing. The thermostat is usually mounted onto a bare area of metal on the hot water tank and fastened using a wire band. It can be powered wirelessly or by a fixed wire. On unvented cylinders, the cylinder thermostat is an insertion type that is inserted into the tank via a well built into the tank at manufacture. Read more about DECC Digital room thermostat Digital thermostats have no moving parts and use a simple device called a thermistor to accurately measure room temperature. They have an LCD screen showing the current temperature/setting. Honeywell s programmable digital thermostats also display the time, date and day of the week. Digital thermostats are either wireless (battery operated) or wired into the heating system, and advanced models have touch screens and can control heating systems with zoning. So if you are too hot you can conveniently and quickly reduce the room temperature without altering your pre-set heating temperature. The ECO button is found on the DT90 and DT92 wired and wireless room thermostats from Honeywell. Extra hour button This button on modern Honeywell time controls can switch your heating on (or extend the programmed on period) for up to 3 extra hours without altering the pre-set programme, giving you extra comfort. 8 A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z Firing the boiler This is what happens when the heating controls tell the boiler to provide heat for heating or hot water the boiler fires. Frost protection Internal pipes are vulnerable to freezing in harsh weather. Frost protection is the setting up of thermostats to ensure that if the temperature drops below a pre-set lower level the boiler will fire, regardless of the time period programmed, to prevent the pipes from freezing. Frost protection usually kicks in when temperature drops below 5 C in the UK. Please note: A standard room thermostat won t keep you protected against frost in areas outside the main temperature measurement area. If you have pipe work on exterior walls or in garages or outhouses, additional frost protection may be required. Find out about Honeywell s frost thermostats

A Gas Safe registered engineer has been checked to make sure they are competent and qualified to work with gas. Always ask to see your engineer s Gas Safe registered ID card. Ground source heat pumps These pumps use pipes which are buried in the garden to extract heat from the ground. This heat can then be used to provide hot water and heat radiators or underfloor heating. Guest bedroom If you have a guest bedroom that is only for occasional use, it makes sense to zone off this room and heat it separately. See Zoning

An S Plan Plus system includes an extra zone valve and room thermostat to control an additional heating zone. A Y Plan system does the same job as an S Plan but instead of two motorised valves, there is one mid-position zone valve that diverts water to where it is needed. Heating profiles A series of time and temperature instructions for your boiler, which can be heating or hot water profiles, or combined heating and hot water profiles, depending on the type of heating controls you have installed.

Losing heat Even if your windows and doors are shut, your house may not be airtight and heat may be lost though small gaps and crevasses. It is used to confirm that you are happy with the choices you have made when setting a timer or thermostat. Optimisation Optimisation is an energy efficient function that increases accuracy by starting the heating process as late as possible (Optimum Start) and switching it off as early as possible (Optimum Stop). Learn more about Honeywell heating optimisation Override button This button lets you switch heating or hot water on or off without altering the pre-set programme. You could use override, for instance, if you return home unexpectedly for the rest of the day and the heating s off. Simply press the button and the heating will come on until the next programme time. See Override button animation

This function is especially useful when you want to maintain or increase the temperature during special occasions, such as dinner parties. As well as measuring the ambient temperature of the surrounding area, a programmable room thermostat has a timing function that lets you set your heating for different times and on different days for greater control. These thermostats can be wired in or fitted wirelessly. Programmer The name for a central heating timer that controls the operating times of two separate parts of the heating system. These two channel timers are mostly used to provide independent timing of heating and hot water. They can also be used to control two different heating zones. Radiator valve Mechanical radiator valves are used to manually control the flow of water to an individual radiator. They do not provide any temperature control. For this you need to install thermostatic radiator valves. RF signal RF stands for Radio Frequency and is a catch-all term for the transmissions from various wireless devices. Honeywell s products operate in a unique frequency band and all signals are clear and strong. There is little chance of interference from other signals. See Honeywell s range of room thermostats Room thermostat This is the control that measures the ambient temperature of your property and sends a signal to the central heating system telling it when to turn on or off. When the ambient temperature around the thermostat exceeds the set point, the boiler will stop firing. If temperature drops below the set point the boiler will fire. Stored hot water system Consists of a boiler, hot and cold water tanks, and radiators. The flow of water around the pipes is controlled by a zone valve. Boiler

Temperature controls This term covers a broad range of products that can control temperature in a heating system, including room thermostats and programmable room thermostats, thermostatic radiator valves and cylinder thermostats. Time control This control manages the time that the heating and/or hot water system is operational and makes sure that the boiler only fires for the time period that you set it to. There are three main types of time control: time switch, programmer and programmable room thermostat. Modern time controls allow you to set up to three on and off time periods per day, and some time controls let you set different time periods for all seven days of the week, so you can really tailor your heating and hot water times to suit your lifestyle.

See the current range of User Guides Underfloor heating There are two types of underfloor heating, electric systems or fluid flowing in pipes (hydronic systems), both of which can be installed as the main heating system in a property or as localised floor heating in, for example, the bathroom. It can be a separate relay box, or a built in component of the time switch or programmer that is wired into the boiler. Wireless room thermostat A wireless room thermostat talks to the central heating system control box wirelessly, so the control box does not need to be sited in the main living areas.

The Wiring Centre can be used with a wide variety of heating set-ups and has clearly labelled single terminal connections. They have a dedicated terminal block for each system component (with one wire per connection), an on board fuse (plus a spare), and cable clamps all situated in a strong fire-retardant box. Wiring Guide Smartphone App Your installer should always refer to Honeywell s wiring diagrams when fitting your heating controls. These documents can be accessed via the Honeywell Wiring Diagram App available for Apple and Android devices from itunes and the Google Play store. Over 30,000 downloads have been made.
