29 PRECISE CALIBRATION of hot air is achieved with the SDS100 Sensor Docking System and TPL09 Sensor Locator. This system also calibrates other soldering stations and can store in memory up to four tip temperatures and tip styles. Once calibrated, there is no need to recalibrate between tip changes. SMT REWORK IS QUICK AND CLEAN. The LT428 hot air tip is the standard tip installed on the 1036, 1032, 971HA and MCS100HA. Using nitrogen instead of shop air reduces oxidation and leaves cleaner solder joints. DIRECT CONTACT REWORK TIPS can be used on the 1036DX, 1036, 1032 and MCS100HA. This is possible by changing collars and selecting the best CROWN tip for the job at hand. Use CROWN tips on four-sided components like PLCC s and QFP s. NON-CONTACT REWORK is achieved by using an LT572 or LU572 dual flow adjustable tip. These tips have hot air directed to the leads not the component. The LT572 tip application can be used on the 1036, 1032, 971HA and MCS100HA. The LU572 tip can be used on the 1036DX. Both tips are bendable to tailor fit a wide variety of component sizes. 75 GLOSSARY DEFINITIONS are slanted toward the usage of EDSYN products. The meaning of any particular term may differ from a dictionary definition. ACCUMULATOR - A metal insert used inside soldering tips to increase heat storage capacity. ATMOSCOPE - EDSYN s industrial heavy duty vacuum pump. Also applies to single or multi point hot air soldering tools. BGA - Ball Grid Array. CLOSED LOOP TEMPERATURE CONTROL - Temperature regulation by means of sensor feedback. A signal that is sent to the electronic circuitry section where it is compared and power is automatically adjusted to maintain a preset temperature. CONTACT OR CONDUCTIVE SOLDERING - Method of soldering where heat is directly transferred by touching the component leads with the soldering tip. CORROSION - An oxidized film which forms on copper, especially at high temperatures. Unless removed by a flux compound, this can cause dewetting and poor solder connection. DEWETTING - A condition where molten solder will not adhere nor interact with the metal surface because of contamination. DESOLDER - To remove solder from a surface or connection by vacuum or wicking. ELECTRONIC TEMPERATURE CONTROL - Ability of a soldering tool to adjust and maintain tip temperature by using an electronic circuit. (See Closed Loop Temperature Control) DIP - Dual-In-Line Package integrated circuit. This type of device has its leads arranged in two parallel rows. HUMMERWORKS - EDSYN s Research & Development department. EROSION - The gradual dissolving of certain metals, such as copper, by molten solder. ESD-SAFE - Electrostatic Safe Discharge. Materials that distribute electrostatic charge along the part surface and quickly dissipates to the air or a ground. Most EDSYN products are made from ESD-safe materials. FPT - Fine Pitch Technology. FRONT LOADING - Method of changing soldering tip without having to remove a retaining collar or sleeve. FLUX - A compound which exhibits a mild cleansing action on copper and other metals to remove oxidized film corrosion which can cause poor solder wetting. HEAT TRANSFER - A relative term describing the ability of a soldering tip to transfer heat energy from the heating element to the solder connection. HOT AIR - Method of using hot air to promote reflow of solder used in connection with SMD rework and assembly. IC- Integrated Circuit. HOT AIR OR CONVECTIVE SOLDERING - Method of soldering where air or nitrogen is heated up then blown towards the component leads. HP - High Performance. Soldering tip configuration that allows direct tip to heater contact and reduces heat loss from heater element to soldering tip. IDLE-REST - Compact multi-purpose energy saving holders for EDSYN soldering tools. Also functions as a station with cleaning sponge, solder and wick supply. IN. HG - Inches Mercury. Unit of measurement for vacuum or air pressure. IRON PLATING - A protective plating for soldering tips to reduce solder erosion and promote long tip life. Iron plating has good solder wetability. ISO9000 COMPLIANCE - Guidelines set by the International Organization of Standards to achieve a certain level of quality before the European member country may buy or sell goods and services to another member country. KLATCH - EDSYN s special purpose holding devices such as pliers, tweezers, IC removers and vise grips. LCC - Leadless Chip Carrier. Usually a square or rectangular SMD. LEAD - The wire termination which exits a component or connector. Also referred to as pin. LEAD PATTERN - The arrangement of the component wire terminations usually in parallel rows. Some multi-pin IC s have their leads arranged in circular pattern. LONER - EDSYN s temperature controlled soldering instruments. LOW STATIC POTENTIAL - A term which describes various desoldering hand tools which exhibit negligible static charge build-up on their surface. ESD-safe desoldering tools are recommended when working with sensitive SMD s. MULTI-TASKING - The ability to simultaneously perform different soldering applications from a single workstation. PLCC - Plastic Leadless Chip Carrier. PSI - Pounds Per Square Inch. Unit of measurement for air pressure. PREHEATER - Device used to bring up the initial temperature of the component leads before desoldering occurs. POD - A unique heat retaining holder which holds the soldering tool during interim use. It provides a protective environment for the heating element and tip, which promotes longer tip life. QFP - Quad Flatpack. QUICK CHANGE - Action taken to remove and replace tips quickly. REFLOW - Heating of solder, either in paste or solid form, to make a solder connection. SMD - Surface Mounted Device. SMT - Surface Mounted Technology. SOIC - Small Outline Integrated Circuit. Unregulated soldering tools have relatively poor thermal regulation at the tip. The EDSYN LONER temperature controlled soldering instruments have excellent thermal regulation which exceed the requirements of MIL-S-45743E; (less than 10 F high cycle above the control temperature when in idling or stand-by mode). VACUUM PULSE - Amount of air pulled into a chamber at a certain velocity. WETTING ACTION - The ability of molten solder to combine readily with the metals in the solder connection. Clean metal surfaces which have been fluxed properly promote excellent solder wetting. Dirt, grease and oxidation inhibit the natural solvent action of molten solder. This is characterized by bare spots or balling up of solder on the connection. WIGAPRY - EDSYN s soldering and desoldering tool aids.
